Our son's good friend is a Marine that has served in Iraq twice and is currently in Afganistan. He has told us how greatful he is for the letters of support and the food care packages.

Come on Project Hope - update your website with the truth about the Basra Children's Hospital in Iraq that you said that would be opened in 2006, then 2007, 2008....It still isn't opened, and you never had the integrity to admit that as a US Defense contractor, you don't want to ruffle their feathers. I encourage anyone considering working with Project Hope to understand that they are working for the US Defense Department, just as USAID did in Vietnam. You won't be considered as a neutral aid worker by anyone in the field.

I worked as a US contractor in Iraq for a number of years. Although Wired did attempt to establish a presence in Iraq, their claims (which remain on their website) of having any working sites there are greatly exaggerated. At best, they installed some outdated computer equipment that regularly crashed, and they provided no sustainability, leaving those of us who actually stayed in the country facing the anger of medical students and doctors in numerous locations. Furthermore, they attempted to use their connections with the Bush Administration to divert funds from primary care programs for Iraqi women and children to support complex and expensive telecommunications systems that they had promised to the Iraqi government and failed to deliver on. The USAID country director was able to stop them, but it resulted in a major hit on her career.

Bottom line is well meaning, but misguided techie folks with no understanding of how to implement development projects in poor countries. Negative impact on other US NGOs is a big minus to any pluses they may bring. Minus two starts for that.

Also, for a techie non-profit, you would think that they would update their website to reflect reality now and then. Self hype is another star loser.

Everyone says, "been there, done that" but I really have. Served in both Iraq and then again 2 times in Afghanistan. America's troops are doing a hard job without adequate supplies and it's groups like The HUGS Project that keep us going and motivated.

We feel like these people are the true heroes. We're just doing our jobs. They don't have to do what they do but they do it because they care about us and that's better than gold.

I've gotten care packages with hugs in them and just want to say thank you to each and every member who's ever packed a box or written a letter to let us know that you haven't forgotten we're still over here.

May God continue blessing America and the good people of The HUGS Project.

The Hugs project is an awesome prgram. It provides a valuable service to members of the military in harms way. I enjoy being a part of this organization as a volunteer and feel I could never do as much as they have done.

I have to THANK VSC so very much for putting together all the information for dad’s VA Benefits. We could not have done it without them. My dad wanted to send a contribution as his way of saying how much he appreciates all they did.

I am not sure what we have to do for now but he is receiving his checks into his account and he is very much relieved. The monthly checks started this month and hopefully will continue as long as he needs them.

Again, he is very thankful and appreciates all you did.

I have been with The Hugs Project since last year and have packed boxes for the troops during Christmas. My brother recently returned home from Iraq and received packages from The Hugs Project. This is a great organization supporting our troops overseas, I plan to continue to help in any way I can by volunteering each week.

I have been involved with the Jericho Project since 1992, and have been on its board since 1996. Jericho is an outstanding organization because it addresses the root causes of homelessness and, by providing a host of supportive services, helps its clients stay sober, find jobs and, where appropriate, reunite with family members. NYC's shelter system of "3 hots and a cot" costs NYC taxpayers about $30,000 per person per year, and does nothing to help homeless people find a means to sustain themselves and move to independent, taxpaying life. Jericho provides the support services its clients need to kick drugs and alcohol, build careers and pay their own way in society, yet only costs $11,000 per person per year.

There are countless success stories, but one of my favorites is of a former Jericho resident who had been an alcoholic for many years and had gotten so low that she was drinking nearly a gallon of rum a day and "Just waiting to die". She had no job prospects and lacked even a high school diploma. She came to Jericho, having decided to get sober and make something of her life, and with the tremendous support she received from the Jericho Project, got her GED, earned her undergraduate degree and earned a Masters degree in Social Work from a prominent NYC university. She now works for Jericho, counseling other residents and showing them what you can accomplish when you decide to do it.

Each year, Jericho hosts an awards ceremony as part of its Thanksgiving celebration, and recognizes a resident and a graduate from each of its sites for their outstanding achievement. The nominations come rolling in and it is often difficult to choose finalists from among the many stories of dedication to sobriety, working hard at a career, and generally restored dignity of contributing to society that our residents demonstrate.

Since its origin in 1983, Jericho has had a long and proud history of leadership in recognizing and addressing the most important crises contributing to the homelessness in NYC (crack in the 80s, AIDS in the 90s, and our newest crisis, the flood of homeless veterans). Its model is effective, evidenced in its success rate of graduating roughly 30% of its residents each year into sober, independent, tax-paying life; and Jericho accomplishes all this for a fraction of what it costs to house someone in a shelter ($30K per person, per year) or a jail ($40K per person per year). Jericho's model is sustainable and scalable and extremely cost-effective. And the best part? It works. Jericho is an investment in our future.

A very special, caring ministry in Western Honduras. Low (no?) overhead, everything goes to those in need in impoverished communities. Lives have been saved, literacy rates have been increased, school dropout rates have been reduced. The organization has established EMT services in many communities; they've built a very necessary, and popular, medical clinic; they provide important school supplies to more than 2,000 children in 25+ remote Mayan communities in the mountains of western Honduras. All of this with little funding, and no endowment or reserves.

Great organization helping a lot of men and women who proudly serve our country with big plans to help many more people in the future. I am very proud to be affiliated with this organization.

I had been a member of the HUGS PROJECT since 2004 after reading an article in our local paper. My husband is a Viet Nam vet and I wanted a way to help our young men and women in the military. Even though I have never met the "hugs" members in person, I feel like I've known them forever. We are all supportive of each other in various endeavors. It's the best group on the Internet with the biggest heart for our troops.

I joined this group and many others to support my Soldier. Evan is just back from Afghanistan. The wonderful folks at the Hugs Project sent him several care packages during his year of deployment. They also inspired me to work with a group of friends to make Hugs and send them to Evan's unit to help keep them cool over there!

I am so impressed with the work this group has done and is continuing to do for our military. As the mom of a soldier who has been deployed for almost a year, receiving care packages are a welcomed and treasured event. They are a connection from home and something that everyone looks forward to. Thank you to all who have had their loving hands involved in taking care of these courageous young men and women.

Excellent executive director who understands the importance of and need for quantifiable and qualatative outcomes as it relates to the organization. Small, yet highly competant and innovative staff. Despite the limited size of its staff, Art Reach manages to have a strong impact on the arts community in SE PA, specifically those with physical and mental disabilities and the economically disadvanted. I've been very impressed by the ED's ability to develop partnerships with those inside and outside of the arts community. Many who know Philadelphia are aware that is a provincial, patronage town which impedes its progress. Art Reach and its ED is exactly the type of leader that eludes this city and its many nonprofits.

I truly appreciate the free radon test kit that I received from Beverlyfund. It brought me one step closer to determining if my home has radon or not. You see I was "to afraid" to go out and purchase the kit myself. I did complete the test, and the results provided indicate / recommend a re-test. Which I will do. It's too important to disregard. The Beverlyfund site stories section moved me. I must do this for my family and myself.
Thank you,
Christine
