As a teacher and a board member, I am amazed at the dedication to science education offered by the YSC. This summer, YSC offered 5 weeks of hands-on science experiences to the youth in our communities. It is a pleasure to meet and teach the youth, and also to educate the parents through them. YSC also has many high school and adult volunteers who serve selflessly to support the rigorous content. Hats off to the volunteers as many offer support through their knowledge of technology and science interests. They are the best!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my grandson's understanding of science concepts. He relates much of what he learned and experience this summer into his daily life. The sugar crystals he grew are now ready to be tasted! Now he wants to try other white powders to see what crystals form.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

like to see them in a stand alone museum/education center. That way they wouldn't have barriers to hours of operation and would have complete access to all the exhibits at any time.

About 25 years ago, I was looking for a place to send my 3 sons for science / educational opportunities. Their teachers at their school were not interested in presenting stimulating hands on science, but read science texts and had students answer questions at the end of the chapter. The only science summer camps I knew of were in downtown Los Angeles, about 25 miles away. I heard through a friend about the Youth Science Center offering after school mini-classes with emphasis on different science phenomena in our local area. We were WOWed when we attended a class on GLOW-In-the-Dark chemicals and how they light up because of chemical reactions! The Youth Science Center soon began offering summer classes in Hacienda Heights. After attending a few classes, we were hooked! So much, so, that it greatly improved my effectiveness as a science teacher! I began teaching classes at the YSC during the summer, and now I couldn’t think of anything more enriching to my profession. In fact, my 6 year old grandson took his first class of Balance in the Circus last year! I firmly believe that anyone could find their passion in a science field through the Youth Science Center!!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my ability to understand and share my passion for science. I have since developed a science program for my K-5 school district. Working with scientists and other professionals, I returned to college to earn my M.A. in Curriculum and Development.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help them establish a permanent site so that school groups would be able to visit and attend classes.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the attitude that everyone can benefit and have fun while becoming science literate.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely helpful and enthused about what they do. The principal and museum director of the YSC checked with teachers every day to ask if they have what they need to teach their unit in science in an interactive way.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build a museum that could house their extensive collections.

Ways to make it better...

the YSC could easily access the materials they have.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

publicity and monetary support to further their mission.

One thing I'd also say is that...

there have been many volunteers over the years that have contributed to making the YSC a relevant, and highly successful venture for science education.

My two boys, 9 and 10, have been attending Youth Science Center classes for the past several summers. It's one of their favorite summer activities. The fact that they look forward and enjoy an academic based summer activity thrills me. Youth Science Center classes are not only fun but the kids learn so much and open their minds to the world of science. The instructors are skillful and exciting. The volunteers are friendly and inviting. We love Youth Science Center!

I have worked at Youth Science Center for a few years now and can honestly say that YSC exemplifies teaching at its best! Its not your read from the textbox style, its loaded with discovery and a passion for the subjects at hand. The children come away with not only a greater understanding of the concepts, but a thurst to learn more! (And they leave with the tools and skills to do so.) I am literally honored to be able to teach there!

I am a teacher at YSC and my 3 children (all adults now) went through the YSC classes for many years. Staff cares about kids and adults. We do good things for kids. We get them to think and use their minds to think and react to experiences which will prepare them for their future as they enter middle school, high school, college and the workforce. Hands-on, minds-on is what YSC is all about. Not only do they do but they think why.
Conclusions are generated based on the hands-on they experience. In some cases, science notebooks are used for recording observations and data collected.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My personal experience is 2-fold: Science Educator and Parent. My experiences as a science educator is that students are getting" beyond textbook" experiences and opporutunities. My experience as a parent of children who attended is that they learned more than just science, but opportunities for collaboration, expression of scientific theory and why.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them more funding and larger site to run this organization. I would also give them more PR.

I am awed at how tirelessly the YSC works to not only teach students about science but how they impart a true excitement of learning. I have had the pleasure of watching my own children benefit from the program as well as the opprotunity to work with and for such an amazing establishment.

The Youth Science Center is an excellent resource for students and parents. The center itself is located at my kids' school, Wedgeworth Elementary, and they visit it all the time. But even better, the YSC provides summer school classes, which my kids attend every year.

My kids have attended the summer sessions for 3 years and even though it's 20 miles away from our home it is well worth the drive! I can't say enough good things about the program they offer for the kids from over 60 different classes, to the well-trained teachers and staff! It's was a pleasure to go there. Every summer I tell my friends about their program. One year I even brought my Cub Scout Den after school to check out their hands on museum. I just wish they had a YSC closer to us or even in every School District!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Since I was a parent volunteer in the classroom I was able to watch my kids experience the oohhs and aahs of discovering science. It was a sheer pleasure to help the other kids too. I even got to learn a little myself when my son took a web design class

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

... build a bigger building to house their museum and have them offer satellite classes to the neighboring school districts.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The wide variety of classes and the GREAT, inexpensive field trips they offer every summer!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The teachers were excited to be there and it showed in their teaching. The volunteers were happy to be help too, just like I was.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

. . . build a bigger building for their museum. Maybe they could even offer classes further away.

Ways to make it better...

If it was closer to my home! 20 miles is far, but well worth the drive for what they offer.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

As with any nonprofit - earning money to keep all the great programs going!

One thing I'd also say is that...

. . . now that my kids are getting older, I wish the YSC would offer summer classes thru high school.

I have been teaching for the YSC for 6 years. I have enjoyed each experience. I especially appreciate the leadership of Mr. Ron and Judy Chong. They are well organized and provide all the support a teacher needs to succeed. I can tell they enjoy the children and the staff under them. They also look to the future and want to provide the most up-to-date curriculum and resources necessary to capture a student's attention.

The Youth Science Center (YSC) offers an engaging, standards-based curriculum to our students in teh Mountain View School District. For the past five years, YSC has expanded the minds of our students by providing them with hands-on experiences in astronomy, robotics, and life science. Students benefit from these high interest activities with deeper knowledge of the sciences and its relationship to everyday life. This opportunity is invaluable to our students. The program is well-designed. The YSC staff help to ensure that the program runs smoothly and effectively.
