Youth Corporation, Inc. ~ Youth Outreach Services (YCI-YOS) has provided delinquency prevention, intervention, and reentry programming for about 20 years to youths who have run afoul with the law. It teaches juveniles how to become productive and contributing members of society.

YCI-YOS
has always been committed to youth, but its recent initiatives reach out in a more comprehensive way to help juveniles and it endeavors to prepare youths to make positive contributions to their respective communities. To that end, YCI-YOS programming has expanded to reduce recidivism, thereby making for a safer society and helping to reduce delinquency-related expenditures in the Washington, DC area. Additionally, an exciting aspect of YCI-YOS programming is that it encourages involvement in and inspires commitment to pro-social community activities.

It is because of its renewed and expanded commitment to young people and to the larger community that I believe that YCI-YOS is a GREAT nonprofit.

As a professor of criminal justice and criminology, I have dedicated myself to efforts related to prevention and reentry, and to research to improve such efforts. In fact, I have been researching delinquency and reentry programs for more than 20 years, and studies over that time period have increasingly shown that the types of programs that are offered through YCI-YOS are the most effective at reducing recidivism and they provide the best chance for juveniles to turn their lives around and become law-abiding and contributing citizens. Research indicates, for example, that the programs that are most effective at reducing recidivism include family counseling, substance abuse counseling, mentoring, and cognitive-behavioral treatment programs such as job training and academic support services. And, those are just a few of the programs offered by YCI-YOS.

I will continue to volunteer with YCI-YOS for the next several months to evaluate programming and help its dedicated staff and Founder, Elizabeth Charity. I am honored to have developed a working relationship with YCI-YOS and look forward to a long-term releationship.

Thank you for this opportunity to share my thoughts about YCI-YOS.

Sincerely,

I have been introduced to YOS when I met Ms. Liz. I attended a youth meeting and it was just amazing sight to see that our youth is finding a purpose to their life and motivated to be responsible. I do believe this organization is exceedingly effective and bringing a social change to better the society.

Ms. Liz Charity is an amazing and motivated woman. I've been involved with her organization for the past year and have attended or volunteered at several event she has been apart of, and seen the dedication and work she has put in to reach the youth in our area. I have personally been able to increase my effectiveness in working with youth because of Ms. Charity's efforts. She works to not only help young people but also to network community leaders, businesses, organizations, and entrepreneurs who are then able to team up and pour back into the community, through various service projects, and job programs. Liz Charity and Youth Outreach Services are an asset to our community.

I have known Elizabeth Harris-Charity for almost 15 years and have watched the impact that she has had on at-risk youth. Whether working with schools, the courts, or the community, lives were changed because she always saw the potential in each youth that she met. From car washes, breakfasts at her house to after-school programs youth received mentoring and guidance to help propel them into their destiny.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with the youth and hearing them discuss their fears, challenges and successes.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly, helpful, and always trying to help the youth succeed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

establish an entrepreneurial business education center that could accommodate thousands of students.

Youth Outreach Service is an extra ordinary youth organization. It provides consistency, guidance, focus, listening ear, love, concern, direction and confident booster. I have witness how this organization has make a difference in the lives of youths who is a part of this organization- when the youth first become a part of this organization they go from feeling like a defeated, a nobody and feeling like no one care- to a I CAN DO IT attitude with much confident within a short period of time. I contribute this to the fearless leadership of Elizabeth Charity who displays positive attitude at all time and endless energy.

Elizabeth Harris-Charity first had a vision of helping at-risk teenagers more than twenty years ago. She saw young men putting down their guns and drugs and changing from citizens that are a threat to society to citizens that are making a positive contribution to society. Since 1989, she has been working on this vision. She has visited families, spent time in juvenile detention centers, spoke with community leaders and personally invested time with each at-risk teen she has come into contact with. On every Tuesday she visits juvenile detention centers. She has a fully developed and written out plan that has been impleneted for at-risk teens after they leave the juvenile detention center. This includes mentorships, relationship building and skills acquisition. She has an 70 percent satisfaction rate for at-risk teens who have been through YOS.

I have attended Youth Outreach Services, and I am here to post my opinion of this group. I have found Y.O.S. to be an amazing group of people with true and genuine intentions on helping preteens and teens in the area on an extremely personal level. I was taken back by the willingness of its program leader and its volunteer's to serve each visitor on such a deep level. Y.O.S. is and extremely exceptional group of individuals that are poised to shine through the innocence of their hearts, and the strength of their intentions and convictions.
