I would like to give some constructive criticism for this group that really does help a lot of kids. I just had a bad experience. I was in Young Life as a teen and as an adult, my husband and I were donors attending the local fundraising banquet each year. We were asked to be on the Committee, whose primary purpose is to raise money for the local group. My husband and I had served with many non-profits and felt this was a great group to be involved with. After being on the Committee for awhile I felt that the organization was TOO much about the money and not about the mission of serving the Lord. This feeling was justified when we had an enormous tragedy in our community with great loss of life. The evening of the tragedy, there was a fundraising meeting of the Committee. My husband couldn't go to the meeting, but I went thinking that a gathering of Christians was where I wanted to be so that we could pray together for the families of the dead and the injured. I went to the meeting, still stunned from the day's events and could not believe that the tragedy was not mentioned by anyone at the meeting. It was business as usual planning a fundraiser. At the end of the meeting, we had our usual prayer circle and as we went around the circle, people prayed for the success of the fundraiser, that there would not be rain on the day of the fundraiser and so forth. At this same hour, our community was holding a huge prayer service attended by thousands. At the Young Life Committee meeting, no words were spoken about the young people who had lost their lives that very day in our very own community until it was my turn to pray and I prayed for the families and the injured. I never attended another meeting. After that, my son entered high school and became involved in Young Life and he loved it. I was thrilled when he decided to go to Young Life Camp. He had a great experience and it made me thankful that Young Life was a part of his life. The next year, our family had a tremendously difficult year and my son wanted to go back to Camp where he felt he could help heal from the difficulties. We paid his fee for Camp and then he was told by his leader that he could not go a second time unless he recruited five more kids for Camp. Most of his friends were going on a cruise when school was out and would be partying and drinking. He did not want to do that. Everyone else he asked was already going to Camp. He ONLY recruited three kids instead of the REQUIRED five. He was not allowed to go. I could have gone to the Director whose Committee I served on and complained, but instead I went quietly to the office and picked up the refund for the Camp fee. I realized that the emphasis was on the numbers and perpetuating the organization. They needed NEW kids at Camp so that there would be a greater number of potential donors in the future. Since that time, I have never given one dime to Young Life. I would hope that most staff and volunteers of Young Life would act differently than our local group did on these occasions. I feel that we should be Christians first and if our intentions are good, we will be rewarded. I think the local group would have survived if they had prayed and served when appropriate and raised money when appropriate. For everything there is a season.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my child attending Young Life Camp and having a great experience.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make sure no kids are turned away from the activities.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

hearing testimonies of kids whose lives were touched by Young Life.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

focus on introducing kids to Jesus instead of raising money.

Ways to make it better...

the local staff and volunteers truly had a heart for Christ.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

probably the economy at this time.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the instances I have talked about were experiences with only ONE local group.

I've loved Young Life and supported them financially for over 25 years. I want my grandkids to some day enjoy the same clubs, camps, Campaigners, work crew, etc that I've been blessed to experience. Young Life was a definite turning point in my high school life - to know Jesus in a personal relationship and worship Our Father in heaven. Please get involved in your local committee or support the ministry with prayers and financial gifts.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their fund raising and positive impact on my son's high school.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Add YL to all our area high schools as God provides the necessary leadership and funding.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Seeing Jesus in the Young Life leaders, especially David Page, our Area Director.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

top notch and give of their time sacrificially.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach more kids for Christ because some areas have had to close their doors due to lack of funds. Also more urban programs could be launched.

Ways to make it better...

More parents would come out and support the fund raiser.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

our current economy has impacted the financial giving of local donars.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I can never thank our leaders enough for sharing Jesus with my son and his friends.

As a Young Life Staff person that didn't have the chance as a teenager to be a Young Life kid, and in fact did not even get involved until I was in my 40's, I have just got to say that I LOVE what Young Life can offer to teenagers - as it shows them that Christ is Life - the REAL kind of life that He intended for all of us! As we on staff raise the money we need to advance this ministry into the lives of more teenagers, it would be great for Young Life to have a more significant awareness amongst those in a position to offer help!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing the lives of teenagers totally turned around and changed for the better as they come to realize how much the Savior loves them.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Probably make them very, very slowly because in my 12 years of involvement, Young Life has kept it finger on the pulse of adolescence culture better than any other organization of which I am aware.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The conviction that the Young Life Mission has..., that the best Young Life work is YET to happen. The future of Young Life is exciting to anticipate and belongs to the teenagers we are working with right now!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Some of the most creative and dedicated people that I have ever met in any line of work or volunteer involvement.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Mobilize within more communities throughout our country and countries around the world, encouraging staff and leaders to keep on reaching into the lives of teenagers

Ways to make it better...

I would have had the chance to experience Young Life as ateenager myself!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The lack of leaders that have come to realize they were made for this ministry.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Young Life works!

I have been a volunteer with Young Life for the past 7 years. During that time, I have taken high school students to summer YL camps, led weekly outreach clubs and Bible studies and weekend retreats. As one parent recently told me these have been "life changing" experiences for the students. Not only have I seen the lives of students changed, but these experiences have been life changing for me too as I have been challenged in my own faith.

A big part of my beautiful teenage memories are of young life and friends in young life. I look back and realize there are so many things that I wouldn't have experienced without young life. Young Life has always been a part of our lives since we were teenagers in Chester, PA. My husband and I both became Christians through Young Life and went on to be on the Young Life Staff. It is by far the best way to help teenagers who are going through so many different cycles in their lives. There is nothing any better.

I have personally watched Young Life change the course of dozens, of lives, and I know of hundreds more that were affected by those same lives. The course of my own life was changed when a Young Life leader befriended me. I went on to become a volunteer leader, to get a degree in Youth Ministry, and to join the staff of Young Life as an Area Director. Kids who were shown the incredible love of God have chosen to live their lives differently as a result, and have brought that change to their families. Kids who didn't think they had a hope, or a future are now young men and women with families and impact on the communities around them, some as Young Life leaders and staff themselves. Even though I am no longer on staff with Young Life, I still work as a volunteer with high school and middle school kids and the perspective and methods I learned in Young Life will stay with me forever.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Young Life is an organization that cares about entire communities, from the kids to whom it directly reaches out, to their parents, to the teachers and administration in the local schools, to anyone who believes that kids are worth investing in.

Younglife reaches out to high school kids with the message of Jesus. Some have never stepped foot inside a church or heard the Good News. I have many friends that received Christ during their time involved in Younglife. Tremendous!

Ways to make it better...

I had Younglife at my high school growing up.

My daughter, now 27 years old,got involved with Young Life when she was a freshman in high school. OUr family was not familiar with Young Life prior to her involvement. As we explored this organization, we found a group of caring adults who befrined kids and help them stay on the right track by 'being there' for them. These volunteer leaders were 'the caring adult' outside the family for my daughter. Subsequently, our son also became involved stayed on a great path through highschool as well. Young Life is like a 'rudder' for kids. Our family has supported this organization since 1996. We have seen many kids make significant changes in their lives as a result of the support they received through Young Life.

More feedback...

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

genuine, kid-focused young adults who have a passion for helping kids know how much they are loved and valued.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand the support they give to kids and the pay back to communities would be immeasurable.
