YELLOW RIBBON FUND INC

I have been volunteering for the Yellow Ribbon Fund for over 2 yrs. Last summer I took my 16 yr old daughter to help out on a Saturday. Like most whiney teenagers she said it was too hot but then I introduced her to a kind Solider and her mother. This mother told my daughter to be very thankful that her mother cares enough to bring her and that she appreciates her visiting. This has convinced my daughter that she wants to be a military nurse. This is how one day can make a world of difference. It made the soliders day and my daughters. It is such a honor/humbling experience to be able to assist our wounded warriors. I am glad to give even after serving 20 years in the US Navy.

My organization, Federal Highway Adminstration, has partnered with Yellow Ribbon Fund to host several events for the wounded soldiers at both Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Medical Center. They are a wonderful organization to work with, the people are very professional and love the work they are doing. It makes volunteering a pleasant and rewarding opportunity when organizations can come together to help make a positive impact on our soldiers who deserve so much!

I am extremely proud to say I've been a volunteer with Yellow Ribbon Fund for over two years. During that time the staff and my fellow volunteers have shown unending kindness, a true sense of caring and a profound pride in being part of an organisation that works diligently to provide, in all number of ways, for the valliant wounded warriors and their families during their stay at Walter Reed. Last Christmas I attended a reception at the British Ambassador's Residence in honour of the Wounded Warriors from Walter Reed. During the evening I was inundated with grateful comments from the Warriors and their families about what a difference the Yellow Ribbon Fund had made to their stay. It had given them independence with free car hire, a special evening away from the hospital with free dinning, sports and movies tickets.... the list goes on! I can't help but feel very humbled each time I'm in the company of these brave service men, women and their families. I also feel very priviledged to have been part of the Yellow Ribbon Fund. An organisation that constantly strives to help these brave people in so many ways.

the chance to say thank you in more ways than just words.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
not only help support more wounded warriors and their families through such a difficult time in their lives, but expand on the facilities and benefits they could offer.

I've volunteered for the Yellow Ribbon fund for about a year and cannot say enough good things about the organization and the work it does for our wounded vets and their families. Many of the service members treated at Walter Reed are there for more than a year. The Yellow Ribbon Fund does all it can to ease the stresses of that difficult time and to brighten the lives of patients and their caregivers. I've personally assisted in securing travel/outdoor sports opportunities for vets. But the most rewarding moments with this non-profit can come from just listening and talking with our veterans. I'm constantly inspired by their courage, their resilience and their amazing senses of humor! YRF's regular social events give us the opportunity to get to know and show our appreciation for this extraordinary group of people.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
securing a hunting trip for a soldier who really missed the outdoors. Seeing his smiling photos, knowing that he made new contacts who are still supportive, and hearing that his wife said she hadn't seen him this happy in a long time made my year.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
increase frequency of events and volunteer opportunities and create more grassroots fundraising/awareness building opportunities reach out to a broader number of people with small giving opportunities, in addition to holding high-end fundraisers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
realizing that it's the little things that matter. From holding the baby so that mom and dad can enjoy an activity together, to just listening to a soldier share his story and offering words of encouragement.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
extremely dedicated. The staff of YRF is tireless in service of our vets. And fellow volunteers range from those who have served themselves to corporate employees to military moms and more - caring people who are taking time to express their gratitude.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
spend less time on the tireless function of fundraising and focus its efforts on what it does so very well -- caring for our wounded vets and their families.
Ways to make it better...
I could be there more often! I work during the week and would love to have more opportunities to volunteer on weekends.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
competition for charity dollars and for recognition of its work. Many organizations serve our wounded vets - it can be difficult to stand out in that crowd.

YRF provides a critical service to veterans and their family members. So often when veterans return from war they and their families are in need of support and have no place to turn. YRF fills this void by providing several important services, like free hotel rooms and apartments for families visiting their wounded loved ones. I am deeply honored to assist the YRF staff in achieving their mission. They create a positive work environment that is unmatched by my previous and current employers. The work they accomplish with only a handful of full time staff members is a testament to their hard work and dedication. As the U.S. continues to fight two wars the services YRF provides remain imperative. I urge anyone who has not donated or volunteered with YRF to do so.

I have been volunteering by playing music at Walter Reed Medical Center for the last couple years. After our first appearance we were approached by the Yellow Ribbon Fund to perform at a couple of their picnics. They are a very organized group of dedicated people who really care about the soldiers and want to do whatever they can to help. It seems the soldiers look forward to the Yellow Ribbon picnics and stick around to enjoy them. On a more personal note, I had donated NFL football tickets a couple of times during 2009. On more than one occasion one of their staff members would drive to my office to pick them up the day before the game. As I said, they are all very dedicated to making the lives of the Walter Reed veterns.

I have been volunteering with the Yellow Ribbon Fund for over four years and truly believe I have received more from the experience than I have given. Because I was a military mom, I felt drawn to Walter Reed with the hope that I could help, through the many programs offered by Yellow Ribbon, in some small way to make things a little easier for our wounded warriors. During that time I have worked directly with the wounded soldiers themselves as well as with the family members who spend so much time caring for their loved ones. This has included such basic things as getting them away from Walter Reed for brief respites to teaching them how to ride our metro to getting family members to their own doctors' appointments or out to get groceries. Through the generosity of a local business, All Fired Up, we have been able to establish an ongoing crafts project, initially designed to provide a diversion to family members but which has grown over the past three years to include many of the soldiers themselves, which has so far put on 24 ceramics workshops at Walter Reed. The strength of these soldiers and their families is an inspiration and a humbling experience. It has been an honor to be part of the many ways that Yellow Ribbon has touched the lives of these heroes.

The Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF) caught my interest as an organization because it not only helps out injured service members, but also their families. They give support in areas that are often forgotten about when a soldier is injured. Some examples of this include: regular transportation for hospital visits or even grocery shopping, fun events such as a bbq or meet and greets, and even job networking. Most of all, I have found that there is an honest feeling of care and true support for the service members and their families who are going through difficult times. Plus, I have found that the experience of assisting in any way possible produces a good feeling all around! The Yellow Ribbon Fund is doing its best and then some, to support a group of people who deserve and appreciate these efforts. The YRF is definitely an organization that should be supported!

I cannot say enough about the spirit, the effectiveness and the importance of the Yellow Ribbon Fund. I am a volunteer in the sense that I respond to request for these wounded warrior. This could mean anything from providing a ride to a dinner for the family, clothes for a soon to be married soldier, working at Malogne House at Christmas.
