I have been to several countries that World Vision does work in. You will immediately notice them in their brand-new SUVs. In the countries I've visited locals will say they believe World Vision often does more harm than good in the fight against poverty. Some of their programs only encourage it and remaining dependent on their funding. While I'm not advocating not giving to WV or saying they do this on purpose (I don't believe that they do), just be cautious in your giving. Often it's the grassroots, local organizations that do the greatest good on much more of a "shoestring" budget, making your money go further.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

say to give more voice to your local leaders. To find out what really works and will make a lasting change.

Do not choose Haiti sponsorship through World Vision: try a different charity. Through WVI, I had sponsored a young girl over several years. The photos I received looked VERY much like they were taken all at the same time: the girl never got older. When I made a large gift, they sent me a newsletter showing only men. I am sure my money helped in some way, but it did not go to the girl I wanted to help.

I am so SORRY Mr. Stearn's and board. I previously posted a negative comment-- and God has been gracious to convict me. Thankfully it has now been removed and I pray I did not cause much damage or discouragement with my words . May God forgive me. Not only do I have a huge "log" in my own eye- I have forgotten Christ's warning "Do not judge, or you to will be judged. For in the same way you judge others , you too will be judged, and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1 Please forgive my arrogance and self-righteousness. PLEASE.

In 2001 through 2005, my husband and I sponsored children through World Vision. The organization has been helping communities throughout the world for over 50 years. They are completely trustworthy and understand the power of prayer as much as the power of monetary support. It is obvious that they care deeply about the lives of others. World Vision registers with agencies in many states, so it is possible to request information about them directly, if you feel that is necessary. But I can assure you that they are highly organized and dependable. I have a great deal of respect for their humanitarian efforts and outreach.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The genuine gratitude from the organization and children whose worlds you so obviously impact.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many more children and their families than it does, especially with regard to facilities, education, sanitation and housing.

Ways to make it better...

receiving mail from the children wasn't as slow a process, but there are many factors to be considered, including postage and translation.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding, especially in these economic times.

One thing I'd also say is that...

If you want to experience much joy, consider changing the life of a child.

I have been giving to World Vision since 1989 and have nothing but praise for the organization. 87% of their donations go directly to the people in the countries that need it. They are in over 100 countries around the world providing humanitarian relief efforts 24/7. I would highly encourage anyone to join them in helping the people of Haiti. They have 370 staff members on the ground although most of them are shell shocked from this disaster and need relief themselves. So please donate now to help the people of Haiti. Thank you!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

It consistently gives to the poorest of the poor by teaching, training, providing basic services but also by helping people to help themselves. I know adults that were sponsored as children that are now leading productive lives.

About every week
