Issues: Arts & Culture, International, International Exchange

Location: 4022 Hummer Road Suite 109 Annandale VA 22003 USA

Mission: The World Children’s Choir, founded in 1990, serves as a voice for children worldwide… a voice that celebrates cultural diversity through music, builds positive international relations, and asks people to work together to create a healthy, peaceful world for all children.
Results: The Choir has been appointed to the Artists Roster of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Performances have been given for former U.S. Presidents Bush and Clinton, Queen Noor of Jordan, Queen Sofia of Spain, the United States Supreme Court and on numerous other occasions at the White House, the Kennedy Center, on Capitol Hill and for national and international television broadcasts. We fulfill our mission in three ways: First, to local children of all cultures, nationalities, and economic circumstances, we offer professional instruction and unique opportunities to sing with beauty, artistry, and joy. Second, we direct our music to inspire our audiences – reinforcing and sustaining our belief that by working together we can truly create a peaceful, healthy world. Third – through our projects and activities of our Voices for Children Campaign (benefit concerts, CD sales, and community outreach) we raise money and coordinate activities to directly support children in need – both locally and throughout the world. The Choir has helped raise money for national and international children’s causes and organizations such as the Children’s Defense Fund, UNICEF, and the CARE Foundation. The Choir raised funds to purchase an entire year’s worth of school supplies for children in Morolica, Honduras, whose village was destroyed by Hurricane Mitch. WCC partnered with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church to raise $12,000 to build a blood-testing wing in the Kgabo District Mission Clinic in South Africa. Most recently WCC singers appeared in a benefit concert for Missions Schools International that raised enough funds to build three boarding schools in Kenya. The Choir performed for former Soviet President, Mikhail Gorbachev and guests at the Embassy of the Russian Federation, as part of a very special dinner to raise funds for Childhood Leukemia Research. The Choir’s Voices for Children Festival and concerts were given in Ireland in honor of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees first World Refugee Day. Concert proceeds were contributed to programs for child refugees living in Ireland and the UNHCR Educational Trust .Additional workshops and performances were given in Dublin, Cork, Carlow, Waterford, Galway City, and Connemara. Performances in Dublin and Cork were shown on national television throughout Ireland. Through our music, we reach out to audiences far and wide to reinforce our message of hope and unity. The World Children’s Choir gives a voice to local children to earn support and attention for the needs of all children worldwide, and calls upon adults throughout the world to do the same.

My name is Wanda Warren, and I have been a Board member longer than anyone else, since 1994. I am a musician--sing and teach piano. My husband and I have an ongoing project for providing income for the WCC. We have traveled with the choir to Scotland, Montreal (Quebec, Canada), Ireland, and Romania. Where else can you see different parts of the world and enjoy a children's concert each day. The sound Ms. Harnes leads the choir to produce is breathtakingly beautiful. In Dublin, one tourist heard them singing on the street outside the cathedral and said "They can't be children, They are too good!" More money would enhance the choir's ability to fulfill its mission -- "to serve as a voice for children world-wide, to celebrate cultural diversity through music, to build positive international relationships, and to enroll people in working together to create a healthy world!" I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

hearing the choir perform, in meeting parents choir members, and international travel.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have more money

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

hearing such high-quality, live music

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly, competent, and committed

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Fulfill its mission in a broader context, and the director would have more help

Ways to make it better...

I was better acquainted with the children

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

More money

One thing I'd also say is that...

As a board member, I have personally experienced the World Children's Choir dedication to improving the lives of children from all backgrounds through music and drumming, promotion of positive international relations and its contribution to making the world a better place. One project of particular acclaim is the innovative International Voices for Children Institute that the WCC spearheaded in the Middle East that aims to use visual and performing arts as an interactive means of self-expression and communication to promote healthy educational development of children living in underserved communities affected by violence and conflict through visual and performing arts, foster international understanding and friendship through music and self-expression, and engage the resources and goodwill of the global community to improve the lives of children in need.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The quality of the music performances and dedication to the WCC's mission of promoting positive international relations between children of all backgrounds is wonderful.

We have been involved with the choir for over six years. I have gone from proud parent to production manager to board member. I remain a proud parent, the production manager and secretary on the board. This organization is simply amazing. The talent, the training, the comraderie, the organization, are all stellar. The children support and nurture one another - from the oldest to the youngest. The choir is absolutely a team effort and the talent is top-notch. They receive rave reviews wherever they go!

The World Children's Choir provides children with outstanding musical education combined with providing them with an awareness of the world and their obligation to create peace and understanding among people of all races and nationalities in order to improve conditions for children all over the world. The quality of the music that the Choir creates is amazing. It is truly inspirational to hear children from ages 4 to 18 sing in different languages and sing sophisticated classical pieces. Their "music with a message" is beautiful!

I first encountered the World Children's Choir during the new millenium celebrations during the holiday season going into the year 2000. My first words after hearing them were these: "They are angels, the sound like angels". They sang at a multitude of venues outside at night in the cold for large and small audiences working with all those involved in the new millenium production on the national mall. They maintained their focus and professionalism even the very youngest students. Sondra Harness, the director of the choir is inspiring, very talented and totally committed to the choir and to each child in the choir. She would like to be able to reach as many children as possible in all corners of the earth. Music is a universal language that builds unity and understanding. I will continue to support and do everything I can to ensure that this wonderful organization grows and prospers to reach its ultimate potential.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Fund current projects involving collaboration with children and arts groups in several different countries as well as training for music teachers and provisions for ongoing relationships.
