Issues: Children & Youth, Homeless & Housing, Religion

Location: 189 Charles Bancroft Hwy % Kenneth Therrien Litchfield NH 03052 USA

Mission: workcampNE seeks to provide an environment that helps foster the growth of students' relationship with Christ through community service opportunities. We celebrate each evening with a worship service and hear a lesson that ties in our day's work with the message of the gospel. Our service is to provide home repairs to those who cannot afford to do so themselves, are elderly or physically unable. Through the use of community service we are able to demonstrate and make "real" the gospel message and impress upon our need as Christians to "do" rather than "be." Our service to the community is to provide home repairs to those who either cannot afford to do so themselves, are elderly or physically unable. We provide all the materials and labor and there is no cost for the resident. This is a service to families, single parents, and individuals. Jr. High and High School students come from all over the country (mostly the northeast) and pay a tuition to attend. Much of the tuition is then used to pay for the materials. The students provide the labor.
Results: Since 2003... Homes/Families served: 380 Students & adults serving: 2910 Volunteer hours donated during the 3 weeks of service: 79,677 Cost of Materials donated: $285,041 Financial Impact: $792,861
Target demographics: students with growing their faith through community service
Direct beneficiaries per year: over 200 students and 30 families.
Geographic areas served: the northeast
Programs: worship and devotions for the students and no cost home repairs to the community we serve. We will work on the homes of the under-resourced, elderly and the physically unable, providing the labor and materials at not cost to the residents.

During the past five years I have had the pleasure of coordinating the needs of several Kennebunkport families with the staff and volunteers of Workcamp NE. several times. They are a blessing for our low income seniors and handicapped residents. Because of their effort ,these individuals are able to remain in their homes. The volunteers installed new windows, roofs, ramps and bathroom railings. They replaced rotten siding and painted up homes. All at no cost to our residents.
More importantly is the bond of friendship that has been established. My seniors refer to them as "MY kids" All still display photoes. Some still receive cards and notes just to keep in touch. I look forward to working with this organization. Our residents continue to ask "Are they coming back- even for a visit?" In this day of so much negativity especially concerning our youth- Workcamp NE is an example that there is positivity and caring still in our society.

As Kennebunkport's Welfare Director as well as Public Health nurse I have seen the positive effects that the improvements have made both physically & mentally for our residents.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I can't think of a thing I'd change.

I have worked several times over the last few years with Marcia and Ken Therrien to locate sites for WORKCAMP NE. This is a wonderful program that has changed the lives of many of our community residents. We have received many positive comments about the respect which the youth workers have shown residents and the quality of work done.

I am the Director of The Fixit Program of NH. Our volunteers, mostly retired men and women, provide minor maintenance and repair to the homes of the elderly (60+) and disabled.
Frequently we get requests for service that my volunteers cannot perform. And this is where the WorkcampNE has come in.
We have partnered with the WorkcampNE folks and referred those jobs that we could not do. They and their volunteers have performed services to well over 100 of our clients over the years.
I have worked with a few of the different workcamps and found WorkcampNE to be the absolute best. We'd love to have them again.

Three workcamps that they conducted in NH. All of our clients were very happy.

I have found them to be the best. They do everything right. Their supervision of students is second to none. When I speak with others in my profession about their experiences with other workcamps. I am always comparing to WorkcampNE. They are the standard that I measure others with. I have found no others who compare.

How does this organization compare with others in the same sector?

Very Well

How much of an impact do you think this organization has?

Will you recommend this organization to others?

What is unique about this organization?

Other workcamps have required the local sponsoring group to raise funds for the workcamp: one requiared $12,000, another $19,000. I did not have to raise ANY money for WorkcanpNE to come into my area.
