For the past 20 years The Women's Resource has been a leader in providing financial literacy and leadership skills for women and girls in the greater Houston area. Knowledge is one's best investment. The services of this outstanding organization can change lives at any age. That is evident in the essays for the "Money Makes a Difference" award that is presented at the annual luncheons. The work of The Women's Resource demonstrates that teaching skills can feed an individual for a lifetime while giving a handout feeds one for a day! When a woman can manage her own money, she can also teach others to manage theirs. This valuable group can promote the exponential growth of money management!

I work for a non-profit to provide social/emotional services to at-risk youth in the high school setting. Every semester for the last three years, the Womens Resource has provided a skilled and well liked facilitator to conduct the Project LEAD group for girls on my campus. They love it! They meet weekly for 10 sessions of financial literacy and leadership skills. The sessions are interactive, educational and fun for the girls. Each semester is wrapped up with a panel presentation of alums who share their higher education and career experiences.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've seen the girls gain self-confidence and esteem.

The mission of financial literacy for women and girls is critical to the economic well-being of our community. TWR is a shining example of business giving back to community and community becoming healthier and a better place for business. This is well-run organization that relies on an army of volunteers to carry out its mission. It is a wonderful partnership between corporate and non-profit. The organization is especially adept at streamlining the volunteer experience so that the community realizes maximum benefit from its volunteers.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

teaching the basic financial literacy courses. When I see the participants taking in the information and writing out a budget for themselves for the first time, I know I am making an immediate difference in their lives.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the personal feeling of accomplishment I have when I volunteer to teach financial literacy classes for the organization. The participants always express tremendous gratitude.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

intelligent and committed to success.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a significant impact on helping families make better financial decisions and would offer hope to breaking the cycle of poverty in families.

Teaching basic personal finance and budgeting to low income women and girls has been very rewarding for me as a volunteer. The students learn how to control their money rather than it controling them. We provide essential skills such as developing and utilizing a household budget, understanding your checking account, etc. The women are grateful to learn something that will reduce thier stress and give them some control over thier lives. The organization makes it so easy to volunteer, they provide the curriculum, handouts and clients. We volunteers just need to pick a time and location to teach and show up. It's wonderful.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen women and high school girls give testamonials on how these classes have changed thier lives for the better. They've learned how to set goals and how to achieve them. It's so gratifying to see the pride they feel in those accomplishments.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would like to see more hands on tools to use in teaching, to make the classes more effective and interesting for the students.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the great group of volunteers and employees who are passionate about the mission.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated, organized, compassionate and motivated to make a difference.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

improve the quality/effectiveness of it's classes, expand it's programs to provide more follow-up. Provide the foundation to change the future for more women and girls.

Ways to make it better...

N/A....my experiences have been positive.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

it's budget. it needs more funding to expand its reach.

One thing I'd also say is that...

we do more than teach financial literacy, but that is what I taught so that it what my feedback is based on.
