Women's Global works to empower women in post conflict Northern Uganda, giving women access to microfinance loans to help improve their lives and the lives of their families. Volunteering for WGEF has been an incredible experience, I have learned so much and it has been empowering to myself as well. I hope to continue to dedicate my time to such a wonderful and deserving cause.

The best memory I have volunteering with Women's Global Empowerment Fund was meeting the women involved in the program. They are humble, yet inspirational people. I met Grace Ouma the first year I volunteered with WGEF, and it amazed me how much a micro-loan and educational opportunities transformed her life. She used the money and her new-found knowledge to not only support her family, but then began reaching out to more women who needed help. She wanted to do something bigger than herself, and that was so beautiful to me. Everyone involved in WGEF has this same mentality, especially the founder Karen Sugar. She has a drive to provide courage, love, and hope to everybody around her. This program has done so much for women, and their families, living in Gulu, Uganda, and I hope it never stops.

During the summer of my sophmore year in high school I met Karen Sugar and was instantly drawn to her non-profit organization. She described that she held fundraisers to provide micro loans for women in Uganda, and that so far the money had transformed the lives of all the women. From that moment on I started volunteering. So far I have been volunteering for three years now and there has been so many unbelievable things this organization has been able to accomplish. Women's Global Empowerment Fund has given women literacy, health, and leadership education, allowed their buisnesses to exponentially grow, have allowed the women to become more confident and independent, and has even supported them to run for political office. It is truly amazing what so little money can do for a communitiy. I even personally met one of the women, Grace Ouma, who won political office in Uganda. She was so appreciative of everything Karen Sugar and Women's Global Empowerment Fund had done for her life. Hearing her stories and her newfound strength that she had gained throughout this experience makes me unconditionally proud to volunteer for this organization. It is an incrediably fulfilling experience that I will forever continue to support.

Women's Global Empowerment Fund is working extremely hard to improve the lives of hundreds of women in Northern Uganda, using hands-on and grassroots methods that have proven very effective! The most inspiring part of WGEF's work is that the women are improving themselves through hard work, determination, and community-building. To listen to the stories of how these women have taken the initiative and the tools from WGEF's programs to improve their lives is truly awe-inspiring. I'm very proud to be a part of the organization and see just how powerful women really are!

I just began interning with the Women's Global Empowerment Fund, and it has already completely changed my perspective on non-profit work. The group uses an ingenious grassroots strategy to cater to the needs of the clients, and the success in just 5 years is astounding. I recently met Grace Okwello, one of WGEF's clients, and she has completely inspired me. A mother of four, business owner, restauranteur, and politician, she is an example of the strength women can have in their communities if empowered through strategic and thoughtful means. This non-profit is a spectacular model of how we can reach out to developing communities and EMPOWER them to build themselves.

Women's Global Empowerment Fund is a wonderful organization doing important work in northern Uganda. By empowering women through education, leadership training, and microloans, WGEF has fostered a community to uplift itself. Karen, WGEF's founder, is a visionary leader who understands how communities and women thrive and has implemented incredible programs in Gulu. It is an honor to volunteer with WGEF to support this mission with my time and talents.

As a mother of seven I had no idea about how my life would be after the impact of the LRA War. I was abducted at the age of six and returned with two children, I hardly knew what to do with my life because my parents were gone. After a few years I met a man whom I thought would provide me with all the security I needed, all was a myth because he kept beating me each time I asked for money and whenever he came home drunk causing even more pain and suffering. With all the pain I wanted to return to the bush where life was much easier but whenever I looked at my children I felt they needed me because no one could look after them after I was gone. It was then that I started growing vegetables and selling but the money was not even enough to cater for our upkeep because my husband could even take it away from me.

I had one problem after the other, with no one to turn to but one day I met a group of Women Benefiting from WGEF, after several days, a peer counselor shared with me a lot about what I was going through and introduced me to the Program, due to my low self esteem I feared to be among other women but gradually I gained the courage.

My life has now changed not only because of the loans but also the trainings that I received. I managed to start up a business and a live stock project which is helping me pay school fees and other basic needs; I also bought a bicycle from the profits which has eased the transportation of my products to the market. At this point the relationship within my family has improved and we are working together to provide for our family, people in my community now respect me and I am now even a community leader, something I thought wasn’t meant for me. At last I have the hope that was long gone.

Women's Global has helped change the lives of women and their families in Gulu, Uganda. Through training women and providing them the funds to start businesses, Women's Global has empowered women and provided them with a way to earn money for their family. It is amazing to see the confidence these women develop as their businesses grow. Gulu needs Women's Global!

Women's Global Empowerment Fund (WGEF) continues to grow and change the lives of women in Northern Uganda. 2011 has been a big year for WGEF. They expanded their loan program to include agricultural loans, a critical tool in addressing the rising food prices worldwide. Additionally in 2011, lifetime dollars lent out surpassed $100,000 and the default rate remains at 0%! Five WGEF clients ran for regional political offices and three won the race, enabling women a seat at the table and a voice in policy development! WGEF continues to empower women and thereby their families in Uganda.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

meeting with clients in Uganda and seeing firsthand how their lives have been transformed through WGEF's programs.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

get them more money to keep expanding their programs and changing more lives!

I have been a volunteer, donor, and eventually a Board Member for this phenomenal organization. I have been to Gulu, Uganda both before and after Women's Global started working there and the difference this organization has made is amazing! They have transformed the attitude of Ugandan women from one expecting people to give things to them to one of empowerment, self-confidence, and a desire to change their own lives. I have watched women learn to read and write, learn how to handle domestic violence issues, and start businesses. In particular, Grace was a women I knew in Gulu before Women's Global even existed. She was very quiet, with empty eyes and was always asking what I could give her - money for her daughter to go to school, money for medicine, etc. Two years later, after receiving a loan from Women's Global, I saw Grace again. This time, she was a confident women with joy-filled eyes. She didn't ask me for a thing, but told me about her business and how it was changing her life. Grace is now a peer-counselor, helping other women succeed in their businesses. There are so many more women out there, just like Grace, who are being reached by Women's Global and given a chance to change their own life!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the attitude and economic conditions of the women in Gulu, Uganda. Women who have received a loan from WGEF are visible throughout the city. As a result, they are able to better provide food and schooling for their children and are much more confident.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not do a single thing differently than the current leadership.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing lives change as a result of the work done. It is such a joy to watch an insecure, poor woman be given a chance, and to see her be transformed into a confident, economically stable woman.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

wonderful, both in the U.S. and in Uganda. The program manager in Uganda is such a mentor to the women, providing not just business support, but emotional support as well. They are a huge part of why WGEF is so well respected by the community they serve

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

completely change Uganda! So many women could receive loans to start businesses, could learn to read and write. With that much money, current programs could be expanded and new ones could be started - all the empower women and change lives!

Ways to make it better...

All of my experiences with WGEF have been phenomenal! They are a solid organization that is changing lives.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding! But that is the nature of non-profits!

One thing I'd also say is that...

WGEF is an amazing, well-run organization, that is impacting the women it serves and transforming lives.

I have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of this organization when it was just an idea, a small thought in the back of Karen Sugar's brillant mind. With a lot of drive, research, love, and hope, let me tell you, WGEF has made amazing strides not only on the ground in Northen Uganda but to educate people on the benefits of microfinance and the oppotunities that come when women are given the chance to make a better life for themselves and their famililes. From the start, like any greta nonprofit, there have been bumps in the road, but Karen's clear vision for WGEF, understanding of the region and the need's of the Northern Uganda community has allowed her and her team to persevere. With a zero loan default rate, booming business ideas, healthier home lives and, WGEF client's running for political office it is safe to say that this organization is creating amazing possibilities for the women of Northern Uganda.

Last fall I was able to travel with WGEF to Gulu and experience first hand the impact that the organization is having on the women they are working with. While I was in Gulu, the WGEF clients performed in the annual show, singing, dancing, and acting. The overarching theme for the performances was land reform and women's right to own land. It was an inspiring day! WGEF's services are providing women with support that effects every aspect of their lives. By WGEF combining social programs with microfinance they are not only helping women, but also their families and community. It is a great organization!

The combination of social programming with microfinance has been so meaningful for the women! WGEF is a great organization and the relationships that it creates among women in the United States and Uganda are beneficial for everyone.
