I've been involved with the Women's Center of Jacksonville for over 15 years and have seen it grow from its grass roots beginnings to a mature non-profit offering a variety of coordinated services to women, girls and their families. The Center provides health services that are unique in the community: mental health counseling of a sliding fee scale, services for women dealing with HIV/AIDS, and breast cancer advocacy, support, and education. I have always been impressed by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the Center and by the caring staff that is always willing to go that extra mile or two for the clients.

I have heard and read client stories describing the positive results in their lives due to the services of the Women's Center of Jacksonville. I've seen once clients return to the Center to volunteer and donate. I've participated in a 5K with breast cancer survivors and seen their pride

I think it is a great privilege to volunteer with this organization, because the Women's Center of Jacksonville genuinely works to fulfill its mission to support women and to nurture mind, body, and spirit. The support and advocacy this agency provides to sexual assault victims is, sadly, very much needed. Affordable and high quality mental health counseling is even more important than usual in the current economic situation, and so is a program like Expanded Horizons, which helps adult women achieve literacy. When I attended the annual celebration of achievements for the women in this program, their new confidence in their abilities was awe-inspiring.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

talking with women who have been served by its programs, and watching them become empowered.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

add more support staff.
