Mission: The mission of Women Work Together is to raise the socio-economic status of Guatemalan women and girls by cultivating and strengthening their ability to work effectively in groups and aspire to leadership, thus accelerating positive changes in their lives and in their communities.
Results: During 2010 Women Work Together made 2 working trips to San Pedro Sacatepéquez, spending a total of 7 weeks there working directly with over 1500 women and girls from rural villages, plus 30 U.S. and Guatemalan volunteers. More specifically, • WWT established an ongoing Leadership Institute program for junior high age girls to include follow-up through the girls’ transition to young adulthood. • WWT visited ten rural Girls Clubs (average size 35), each started by girls from our Leadership Institute. The members briefed us on their progress and plans, and we facilitated team-building workshops. • WWT worked with the City to establish a paid team of extension workers whom we are training to support our work with Women’s Groups and Girls Clubs in 14 villages. • WWT recruited Girls Club members’ mothers and community mentors to collaborate with our extension workers and the girls’ teachers to support each Club. • WWT continued working with Women’s Groups, offering more than 30 workshops on team building and empowerment. During 2011, Women Work Together will return to San Pedro with volunteer teams in March and November. On each trip we will advance our Leadership Institute and Women’s Workshops, work with Girls’ Clubs, train local extension workers, and strengthen our partnership with the SPS Women’s Office. We will also incorporate two new emphases: • WWT will introduce Madres e Hijas (Mothers and Daughters) a program to join the two generations in their efforts to educate girls. The Women’s Workshops will provide a place for mothers to strategize around the challenges of sending their daughters (even just one) to school and consider the effects on their lives of their own lack of education. • WWT will step-up our recruiting and training of local university students, mothers, and community members to work with the Women’s Office team year round, and alongside our U.S. volunteers during our field trips.
Target demographics: Our primary target is junior high age girls 12-16 years old in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala, along with women in these same villages, the girls' teachers, a dedicated corps of municipally-funded extension workers, university-based interns and other community volunteers.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Nearly 100 girls attend the Leadership Institute; the14 Girls Clubs membership totals 500 + girls; Womens Workshops touch another 500 + women; trainings for outreach workers, teachers, interns and other SPS volunteers impact some 50 people; about 20-25 volunteers travel to San Pedro to work with us and staff our workshops side-buy-side with our partners there.
Geographic areas served: San Pedro Sacatepéquez, San Marcos, Guatemala
Programs: Leadership Institute for Junior High Age Girls, Girls Clubs, Book Circles, Women Workshops, Trainings for City staff, teachers, university interns and community volunteers.

Rating: 5 stars

Women Work Together continues to do remarkable work in San Pedro Sacatepéquez, advancing girls' leadership, raising the visibility of educated girls and strengthening family and community commitment to sending their daughters to school. With each working visit, our Guatemalan partners take more ownership of the participatory programs and are now running them year round on their own.

I just returned from my 4th volunteer trip to Guatemala on behalf of Women Work Together in less 18 months. It's exciting to report that WWT is successfully building capacity on the ground in San Pedro Sacatepequez to engage, educate and empower girls and women there around our core campaign: Manda Tu Hija a La Escuela (Send Your Daughter to School). With good reason, I am very optimistic about the terrific working partnership with the Oficina Municipal de la Mujer (Women's Affairs Office) and other San Pedro community leaders.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

working directly with girls and women in San Pedro Sacatepequez. Going back and seeing the growth in the girls' individually and their participation in their local Girls Clubs. Working closely with municipal and other community leaders there, seeing them execute the plans we agree on. Seeing the growth in the abilities of the cadre of local outreach workers we've established and trained to carry out the programs with the Girls Clubs and women's groups.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Identify sources of funding, support and mentorship that would support paid staff to maximize and leverage the potential of this terrific working model.

Even though we were not part of the trip to San Pedro or the volunteer group, we were able to see the amazing job WWT is doing for girls in Guatemala.

From the dedicated planning of activities, to the quality of character possessed by all the people working for the group, we have never seen a group more devoted and dedicated to their organization.

Not in a million years, could we have imagined meeting such a wonderful group of people working together for a common cause, not only putting the needs of others before their own, but actually becoming involved in the life of those being helped.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

People have told us how their work was done in San Pedro and how it positively affected the life of the people involved.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Not make any changes at all.

I am both a donor and a volunteer. I've been involved with several organizations that support women's empowerment in various ways, and WWT is a standout in the way that it opens opportunities for girls and women by encouraging them to make the most of their own strengths. WWT has made effective partnerships with local officials and organizations -- the local officials had helped women to organize themselves in groups to effect more powerful change in their communities, and WWT is helping girls and women to take advantage of that opportunity. By working with teens, WWT is helping girls see that their futures are in their own hands.

I was a volunteer workshop facilitator in the summer of 2009, when WWT was just coming into being. It was exhilarating to see the teenage girls and women opening up and coming together as they realized what strength they already possessed! Most of them had never had the chance to interact in that way, and it was a revelation to them. I have no doubt that community leaders were generated during those days -- and women who will be equal partners and even leaders in their families.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

simply let it continue to grow and extend its opportunities to more girls and women in Guatemala.

From the first presentation I attended regarding what WWT's mission and activities were about, I was enthusiastic. Subsequent to volunteering with them in Guatemala, I joined the Board. My time and money have been well used.
This Mayan community welcomes us and jointly conducts workshops. Our partners in Guatemala continue to guide and mentor the woman and girls in their efforts toward self improvement.
The results and enthusiasm are apparent, during our time there and as the reports of activities pour in through the year. There is a wonderful synergy in combining the talents of North and Central America. The community's future will be greater as well with educated, empowered girl's and the women they will become.

Each attendee participated enthusiastically and gained experience they could use in their daily lives and work. Everyone appreciated this chance to gain some new skills and build on their social network. They expressed that educated, competent women and girls are key to improving the entire community. They want a better life and see that keeping girls in school, literacy for adults and cooperation though combining the abilities within groups are powerful means to that end.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

More resources - money and volunteers. Demand outstrips how many and how often workshops/training are conducted. The local government supports the programs as they are able but need our contributions- financial and our talent. Other communities have asked to have this presented in there villages. Better funding would allow some paid professional staff, strengthen WWT and allow more outreach.

I met this incredible people. I’ve seen them work with San Pedro´s women and it’s really amazing to see the enthusiasm and energy they put in their work.

I’ve seen local girls (now adults) quit school so early that hurts so deeply; they become men’s slaves and cannot go any further in life. That’s why I feel so grateful to WWT Some of my students belong to the local Girl Club and they are changing a lot. Lots of wonderful changes have taken place; older women are beginning to realize the importance of educating their girls and sending them to school

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Promote the participation of girls by creating spaces for them to speak

Having worked in the field of community development during my professional career, I have more than a familiar understanding of what Women Work Together are facing in attempting to forge new understandings and new roles for women. At present I believe they have a sterling record. Why do I say that? They are gaining support at the community level where support counts most. The organization has garnered political support at the local and prefecture levels of govt. Without that support no lasting effect will be achieved. Last but not least I put money where my "mouth" is - I support the organization financially.

Yes, I personally know and have spent numerous hours speaking with Diane Dvoirn and Tracy Ehlers who were the initiators of this organization

I would increase the focus in management and the application of systems theory at the local level. This is hard to accomplish, but slow and continuous effort will achieve results.

I have watched this group grow from the passion of a single person to the enthusiastic and effective participation of highly accomplished volunteers actively transforming the lives of women and girls in rural Guatemalan villages. It is truly amazing what a small group of dedicated people can accomplish!

I know the people in Women Work Together (WWT), and I have watched the organization develop since it's inception. They are a truly wonderful group of people doing fabulous grassroots work with women and girls in Guatemala. If you speak Spanish and are interested in volunteer work in Latin America, this is a great organization to work with. It's an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of women and girls in Guatemala. And if you are not in a position to be a hands on volunteer, but are looking for quality, grassroots organizations to support, then WWT is a great place to invest your financial resources.

As Hillary Clinton recently said: “I believe that the rights of women and girls is the unfinished business of the 21st century,” and Women Work Together is committed to addressing this issue with women and girls in Guatemala. As a donor, I am proud to see my money go to advancing WWT's work.

As a donor, I haven't been able to experience first hand the work WWT is doing, but by reading their blog, i can keep up to date on their work.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

....want to increase their fundraising.
