I joined the WiserEarth team in the summer to do an internship focused on development and donor relations. I was looking for an opportunity to get more involved in writing and to learn how a non-profit operates. And I definitely got to experience both of these aspects in a short time. From the internship orientation, structure, management, and objectives, I definitely feel like the work I do contributes to the organization.

My experience has been absolutely wonderful. The staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. It's a very positive work environment. I also have been able to work directly on grant proposals. All of the projects I have been working on have been very hands-on and have helped me career wise.

The team is international but the office is based in San Francisco and very conveniently located close to the ferry building and BART/Muni Embarcadero stops.

I would strongly recommend anyone who would like to gain more experience in the non-profit sector-- to apply for an internship here. Your time will be valued and appreciated and you'll get to work with great people. And you'll garner great experience in the field.

I look at the pictures of all the faces - colors - shapes and sizes. I see the places you come from all over the globe. i hear the same heartfelt underpinnings for hope and help offered no matter the voice - and I know I am in the right place amidst the company i would choose to keep. namaste.

Results have been personal to me so far - first in reading Paul Hawkins 2009 address - then finding this org - then joining this org - then researching and reading posts offered from members of this org. "The change i seek begins with me" and I choose educated opinions offered with heartfelt diversity for the betterment of all concerned. I see that here.

Not sure of that yet - I think any challenges to navigating the richness inherent here is likely to be my own lack of online saavy at this point. I expect that to fade with time and use.

Having worked for many years putting together a set of proposals for a new kind of social / political / economic system, last March (of 2010) I found myself ready to begin discussing the ideas with "others of like mind". My search for such a community led me to WiserEarth, and so far it remains for me the best I have found -- both the people and the platform are outstandingly exceptional.

For the last 2 decades, I have been actively involved in the development and continual evolution of Internet based technologies for a number of very large corporate entities. With the onset of the new millennia, it became apparent to me that as the internet and its related systems continued to evolve, many of the actions and behaviours that we associate with the human condition had transposed themselves onto this infrastructure. It became equally clear that that the inequities between the privileged and the under privileged were in many ways accelerated by the advent of this new virtual world. And the concerns that we have always had for human rights and social justice were applicable to this evolving new world in the same ways that they applied in the old one. Finding WiserEarth has been helpful in developing a rising level of awareness and communicating those concerns to a broader and attentive audience. Far more so than the more frivolous applications of most public social networks. I applaud all those involved with the WiserEarth organization and sincerely believe it is a model that needs to be both followed and expanded as we move into the second decade of this new millennia.

WiserEarth (WE) is a social network platform that uniquely caters for non profits, the green and sustainability movements. It brings together many players in this field and has powerful tools for presentation and collaboration. It allows better display of content than Facebook or Myspace, however, the power of it has not been fully utilized by the global community. WE has great potential which hasn't been really tapped into. Hopefully, in future, more people will realize the benefits WE can provide for individuals and organizations. So please, if you are in need for collaboration with the global sustainability movement give WE a try, if you haven't done so. The web tools are based on open source software which is in line with a collaborative community. To move forward into the information age, enabling better cooperation and communication between positive change agents is the best thing to do, and that is what WE is doing. From my own personal perspective, it proved to be useful in promoting a new civilization structure which can be seen here: http://www.wiserearth.org/group/globalleaderciv

Perhaps Paul Hawken can recall the time several years ago we spoke by telephone. As I recall, it was in the earliest years of Century XXI. At that time I expressed my thanks for the inspiration his work was giving to my own work......The AWAREness Campaign on The Human Population, established 2001. Wiser Earth is engaged in some of the most difficult work occurring our time by calling out for intellectual honesty, moral courage, personal accountability and for open speech about what is somehow true as each of us is given 'the lights' to see what could possibly be real. Are these distinctly human characteristics not at least some of the personal hallmarks of wisdom? Perhaps the difficult work that the Wiser Earth community is doing so well can be advanced now here. Can members of Wiser Earth please point to one piece of scientific research by a population biologist, human ecologist or demographer you respect that adequately challenges the evidence of Hopfenberg and Pimentel: that human population dynamics is essentially similar to the population dynamics of other species...both great and small? Many too many experts have not yet so much as advanced to the point where they acknowledge this single point. Their research uniformly uses psuedoscientific or, should I say, unscientific evidence for explaining, however unnaturally and unpersuasively, that human population dynamics is different from the population dynamics of non-human species. What many experts have been referring to for many years as 'scientific' evidence is directly contradicted by unchallenged scientific research of Russell Hopfenberg and David Pimentel. Something is very wrong. I believe experts in demography, for example, are best situated with the economists, whose work is fundamentally induced and driven by ideology, not science. I would like to argue that what passes for a 'scientific' foundation in both demography and economics is not, definitely not science. There are others than myself who have already pointed out that demography and economics are basically ideological-forced, human inventions and, therefore, basically flawed just as are any other manmade designs and constructions now present within our planetary home. The Creation is the appropriate focus of science; manmade works are objects of inquiry within domains like demography and economics, I believe. There is a wondrous effort being made by the Wiser Earth community. Thank to all of you for being there just as you are. The demographers and not unexpectedly the economists are nowhere to be found in discussions of this kind. Silence has been perversely allowed not only to prevail but also to vanquish science. I am 65 years old. During that time it appears to me that experts in human population dynamics and human overpopulation of the Earth have not seen, and if they have seen, not reported the best available science of human population dynamics. Many have permitted admitted complexity in the world we inhabit to blind them from the sight of something comparatively simple. They seem to have paid careful attention to 'the trees' and lost sight of the bigger and simpler picture, 'the forest'. They carefully examined human reproduction in this place or that; but they failed time after time to so much as look at population dynamics leading to the propagation of 3+ billion additional human beings joining the family of humanity in my lifetime. Human population numbers have more than doubled in the past 65 years. With something having such profound implications happening before our eyes, how has this research not sensibly be done. It appears that we are called upon to do this difficult work. If experts do see what we have been discussing and yet refuse to speak, then that appears to me as a cover-up of science with silence. Sincerely, Steve

I joined WiserEarth in September of 2010, and have met and communicated with individuals from all parts of the world through this social network since that time. This provides me with a much richer community of similar minded people than I find just in my home community of St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The tools at WiserEarth have allowed me to create a discussion group on the topic of "Internet Access For Everyone," and within this discussion group, a couple of wikipages on "Plan for Worldwide Demilitarization" and "Propose/Appraise Carbon Tax." The interaction through these tools helps me feel connected to a larger whole that is exploring ways to engage in non-violent system-level change. It would be nice to see larger numbers of people participating in these discussion groups. On the other hand, all social networking over the Internet, especially within the social change movement, is still in a very early stage of development. Perhaps everything that is happening is right on time.

The existing social networking tools at WiserEarth are fairly complete as they are. I especially appreciate the assistance that has been provided by members of the WiserEarth staff in learning how to use the tools effectively. It's up to us to use the tools.

I have an enquiring mind and seek understanding. I found wiserearth indirectly by entering an on-line political debate. I have a strong sense of fairness and am a firm believer in human rights and freedoms and am not happy with the way the world is managed. I prefer a world run by people for people and governments being democratically elected as representatives, not controllers. There are a few who control the many and their motives are suspect. The majority of people want what I want, but need to be co-ordinated internationally to have any effect. Wiserearth is an international platform to bring groups and individuals with common aims together using the power of the internet. The world needs this to redress the balance and improve understanding.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

expanding my understanding of what others think and feel and what others are actively doing for the benefit of the earth and its people. My confidence has grown that there are sufficient people in this world that care and want a better deal and that through them, change will come. It no longer seems retrograde and impossible to defeat those who put selfishness, greed and power before people.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

revise its layout and organisation to improve accessibility and make it easier to navigate and use. It is unwieldy.

"I went to the bathroom & lost my ego". This social network does- to paraphrase a UK advert strap line-"what it says on the tin" without the inane comments apparently found on other SNs. Where did I come across WiserEarth? Probably from a link on Bioneers or Rocky Mountain Institute sites. Why do I participate? My background is in environmental landscaping & my future is in inspiring sustainable thinking, so it makes the obvious home to find like minded people & discuss ideas. It actually allows what the prime benefit of the internet is- that of communication & research. I'm impressed by the quick response time from the editors. The potential for influence from such a large group of people across the globe is phenomenal.

Ways to make it better...

Possibly look at WE becoming politically influential as were Friends of the Earth & Greenpeace in their origins. Though one has to make sure it wouldn't lose its openness & be controlled by a few powerful people with their own agenda
