I have an enquiring mind and seek understanding. I found wiserearth indirectly by entering an on-line political debate. I have a strong sense of fairness and am a firm believer in human rights and freedoms and am not happy with the way the world is managed. I prefer a world run by people for people and governments being democratically elected as representatives, not controllers. There are a few who control the many and their motives are suspect. The majority of people want what I want, but need to be co-ordinated internationally to have any effect. Wiserearth is an international platform to bring groups and individuals with common aims together using the power of the internet. The world needs this to redress the balance and improve understanding.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

expanding my understanding of what others think and feel and what others are actively doing for the benefit of the earth and its people. My confidence has grown that there are sufficient people in this world that care and want a better deal and that through them, change will come. It no longer seems retrograde and impossible to defeat those who put selfishness, greed and power before people.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

revise its layout and organisation to improve accessibility and make it easier to navigate and use. It is unwieldy.

WiserEarth is for me a visionary alternative to the run of the mill social and business networking sites. For cultural and spiritual creatives everywhere, this is the place to be online in order to connect with like minded souls. I recommend friends, acquaintances and colleagues to the site every week and feature it on my blog, so that as many people who would like to get to hear about this opportunity get the chance to do so. It's a great medium for sharing ideas and connections, brainstorming, debating the issues around sustainability and providing mutual support

Hola!

Gracias!

"I went to the bathroom & lost my ego". This social network does- to paraphrase a UK advert strap line-"what it says on the tin" without the inane comments apparently found on other SNs. Where did I come across WiserEarth? Probably from a link on Bioneers or Rocky Mountain Institute sites. Why do I participate? My background is in environmental landscaping & my future is in inspiring sustainable thinking, so it makes the obvious home to find like minded people & discuss ideas. It actually allows what the prime benefit of the internet is- that of communication & research. I'm impressed by the quick response time from the editors. The potential for influence from such a large group of people across the globe is phenomenal.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Possibly look at WE becoming politically influential as were Friends of the Earth & Greenpeace in their origins. Though one has to make sure it wouldn't lose its openness & be controlled by a few powerful people with their own agenda

I joined WiserEarth early 2009, after reading Paul Hawken's "The Ecology of Commerce". As a frenchman, I worked on the French translation of the website, which was released in May 2010. Volunteering to make WiserEarth accessible to a broader range of people, I got to see the organization from the inside, and I met incredible people -- either in person or through Skype and other electronic ways -- 200% dedicated to their work, with an amazing energy. Wibowo, the online community manager, is the kindest person I've ever met, and he's always around to help you in whatever you do, either if you're new to the interface, if you want to setup groups, or to animate debates and throw great ideas in discussions threads. The Editors are also really active people, feeding conversations, creating interest groups to make things move, it's a really great community.

I got a chance to use some of the features of the website, to coordinate a translators group. The tools are really usefull, it is for example easy to send emails to a whole group of people, change layouts, publish articles or pictures etc. It really gives you an efficient way to either promote ideas, or reach out to people with the same interests in sustainable developement issues. I also had a chance to participate to the first Social Innovation Barcamp in Paris, and to a few WiserTuesdays as well.

The interface is not the simplest one, but it is also the price to pay for it to have so many features. I know that the IT team is working on making things easier, more straightforward when navigating on the website. To bring together more people, I think it can still be ameliorated, but it is already on its way.

Would you volunteer for this group again?

Definitely

For the time you spent, how much of an impact did you feel your work or activity had?

Life-changing

Did the organization use your time wisely?

Quite well

Would you recommend this group to a friend?

Definitely

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

It litterally changed me. I met incredible people, and discovered that there was a lot of energy devoted to sustainable development. It is like Paul Hawken says in "Blessed Unrest": there are millions of people around the world, and you have no idea, until you jump in and realize that you're not alone. It really made me think about what I wanted to do in my life, and with whom I wanted to work and collaborate. I pretty much got my idea of working on MBA applications from my experience with WiserEarth...

I have joined WiserEarth exactly two years ago, mainly to register a page for my non-profit educational organization. Though an Artwear Designer, I had never used online technical tools before. With the direct help and hours of free tutorials from Wibowo Sulistio, WiserEarth online Community Manager, I was gradually able to create and design group pages for many topics I felt in need of focus and exposure. My intention was to be of service without any expectations, yet I personally felt immediately rewarded by an intoxicating creative surge through almost every aspect of my engagement; be it design, research, making friends, learning about the various details of the global crisis, posting and engaging in discussions etc. etc. I was soon nominated and endorsed WiserEarth editor.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Five staff members have raised money among themselves to bring me over from the Scotland to SF for the annual editors meeting last month. I met a devoted group who endeavor selflessly to be of service to the tens of thousands of WE volunteers and activists worldwide. I was asked to write about my visit by my own educational org - it will be published on their website under Ideas. A WE member from Moldova held a weekend course with my Org sending someone who speaks Russian to facilitate the study.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

invest more in a high quality online community newsletter to serve and engage the community, as well as a broad-looking and diverse online magazine (paying for top quality writers and visionary interviewees).

The Natural Capital Institute and WiserEarth are doing tremendous work. I have been impressed by how the small, nimble team uses technology and community involvement practices to support environmental, social justice, and indigenous rights work. They really listen to the community by efficiently monitoring site and email feedback, social media (blogs, RSS feeds, Twitter, Facebook, SurveyMonkey, etc.), and through face-to-face meetings and card sorting/priority setting exercises with active community members. NCI/WiserEarth also focuses on empowering other nonprofits to be more effective by providing interactive online community spaces with free tools like wikis, discussion boards, mapping of related organizations, and news feeds. This makes it possible for NGOs with limited resources to have an active online communtiy without having to invest in web programming and hosting. NCI also harnasses community members as volunteers from around the globe to support the organization's programs and provide enriching, capacity and collaboration-building experience for volunteers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

growth in social media programs and brand recognition, a committement to continuous imporvement of the WiserEarth platform to support community collaboration, and empowering organizations in creative ways to connect and share resources globally.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

really dedicated and hailed from all over the world - and I really got to know them through online, call, and (sometimes) in person collaboration. It is truly a global organization!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

MAKE THE WORLD TREMENDOUSLY MORE SUSTAINABLE AND JUST.

Ways to make it better...

I had even more time to volunteer here!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

keeping up with the tremendous number of great requests and opportunities for collaboration and expansion by working with other organizations and innovators from the NGO and business communities.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Natural Capital Institute/WiserEarth is truly a model nonprofit organization that is empowering global communities in unexpected and inspiring ways.

Kudos to the Natural Capital Institute for one of its most recent projects: WiserEarth (www.wiserearth.org). Wiser, IMO, is the ultimate actualization of NCI's mission: it is a vibrant international community over 100,000 nonprofits, united in the goal of restoring and sustaining the earth and its diverse and global culture. Remember that famous line in "Field of Dreams:" "Build it and they will come."? Well, it's happening now at WiserEarth, as more and more progressive and innovative thinkers engage in the socially conscious business of sustainability. I am a volunteer editor at Wiser and consider this the most important work of my life. Thanks, NCI, for helping me find my bliss!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

buy the New York Times, fire the editorial board and most of the writers, hire regional writers, publish in multiple languages on hemp and 'beam up' copies to destinations around the world!

Ways to make it better...

people were not so overwhelmed with nonstop solicitations from other organizations and networks ... because we're the best and we're doing something no one else is.... if we had an enormous soapbox!!!
