I have experience with the Washington Area Women's Foundation in many different ways - as a Board Member of a Grantee Partner, as a donor and as a volunteer.

From every vantage point, the work of the Washington Area Women's Foundation is truly exemplary. As a Grantee, the Foundation was
incredibly supportive, creative and flexible. It was an incredible resource for our organization.

And my respect and admiration for the Foundation has only grown with my additional experience as a volunteer and a donor. They treat grantees with respect and care about the work they are doing, but also about the health of the organization, which is unusual.

As a philanthropy professional, I've been very impressed that the Women's Foundation really walks the walk, as well as talking the talk.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the way that it encouraged, supported and strengthened the nonprofit that assisted women coming home from prison, when I was a Board member.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

encourage them to find more ways to communicate their work to the community and to create more opportunities for community members to get involved with the work of the Foundation.

The mission of Washington Area Women's Foundation is compelling: to foster a powerful wave of philanthropy in order to improve the lives of women and children in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Foundation makes grants to organizations that are doing exemplary work on behalf of women and girls. It uses metrics to determine the effectiveness of its grants. I am convinced that grants made by WAWF are carefully and usefully placed in organizations that can use them best. I have been grateful for the opportunity it has afforded donors to learn about the many effective nonprofits in our city and the many friendships that have evolved from my involvement in WAWF.

WAWF is a wonderful organization! I have served in a variety of volunteer capacities for the past 6 years, and have become increasingly impressed with the organization's vision, reach and impact. As a volunteer, I have been invited to participate in program assessments, site visits, and proposal reviews. This is an organization that knows how to use its volunteers, and an organization that realizes that it will take all of us to make a lasting impact on the lives and life chances of women in the Washington area. Bravo!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have visited a number of WAWF grantees in the course of site visits, and I've heard first hand what being a WAWF grantee has meant. The grantees receive technical assistance and encouragement, and they become part of a larger community of organizations working to improve the economic livelihood of women in our community. The Stepping Stones program in particular is creating wealth and opportunity for thousands of women and girls.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Build its endowment so that it is able to reach more women and girls in need in our community

Having worked in and with nonprofit organizations for many years, I am especially proud to be a supporter of Washington Area Women's Foundation because they put Grantee Partners first, beyond even their own staffing and infrastructure. They give voice to many of us in DC and the surrounding counties who would not otherwise be heard. I only wish I had more financial resources to send their way.

Working independently with Grantee Partners I hear many positive reports about the Foundation.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Cannot think of any change other than wishing more financial resources were available to support the Open Door and Leadership Award programs.

I've been involved with WAWF since it's inception and their clear vision and unwavering pursuit of their mission has been inspirational.
They have been able to put together a program that impacts the quotidian lives of people in the DC community in the most direct and powerful way.
It's
been a priveledge to be involved with them and see their work blossom in the lives of women.

I've been going to the WAWF luncheon and have known several of their board chairs and members (worked with them in other organizations).

My organization, the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, partnered with them on interviewing women who got out of poverty.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Encourage them to give and work with their sister organizations (like the Girl Scouts!)

I have been involved with WAWF for the past few years in a number of ways. I've been a volunteer member of the Leadership Awards Committee on 2 different occasions. In addition to having the chance to network with an interesting group of individuals I was also able to learn about a number of emerging non profits in the various parts of the DC area. My husband and I contribute annually and are members of the 1K club so are invited to networking events and educational programs. I serve on the Board of A Wider Circle, one of WAWF's grantee partners. WAWF recently organized a site visit to A Wider Circle for members of the 1K Club. I think giving donors the opportunities to get out to visit the organizations that WAWF funds is great. Finding an easy way to post more information about grantee partners events and opportunities would be another way for WAWF to help support the work of these organizations by making it easy for the donors to become even more involved.

I have been able to help select groups to be funded through the Leadership Awards Committee. The nonprofit where I volunteer has received funding - Leadership Award and Programmatic support. I have had the chance to network with other donors, members of the nonprofit and business community who are all seeking to improve the lives of women and families in our region.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

To continue to find more ways to help grantee partners work together to share their expertise and resources and to continue to improve the programs and services they provide. To identify a variety of ways for donors to be involved in the organizations that the Foundation supports.

The Washington Area Women's Foundation is an innovative and unique resource for the Washington DC Metro Area. At the core, the WF provides desperately needed support to non profits working with low income women and girls - from technical assistance, to trainings, to grantmaking and convening. No other organization plays this role in DC.

The team is absolutely top-notch and continually provides leadership to the greater Washington DC non profit community.
