This is an organization where mission, management and participation of board, employees and patrons all come together. The school, with only three full time employees, manages approximately 200 volunteers to serve 400 students. In addition to just teaching music to underserved children, the school is now reaching out to help these children apply for college, teach the volunteer teachers and provide music events for the community. The only problem is that even more students want to learn at W.O. Smith Music School.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... seeing kids who want to learn music and need a grounding go from hopeless to college graduates with great careers.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... when a student "gets it." Whether it's about music or something bigger in life.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... passionate, professional, fun.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... serve more.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... the volunteer teachers were given a little grounding in how to teach.
  • If I ran this organization, I would... I really can't think of anything.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... continue serving a growing population.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... having been associated with many non-profits, this is possibly the best managed that i've seen.

As the daughter of two musicians, I know how important music education can be in the life of a child. The years I spent studying piano have been a benefit to me in ways I never could have imagined. Every child deserves the opportunity to have the well-rounded education that music can provide, and the work that the W.O.Smith school does provides virtually unlimited opportunities for the students who participate. I have interviewed a number of the students and have seen how their pride in accomplishment has given them a new confidence. From the recital hall to the White House, W.O. Smith students are going places!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... Meeting and talking with the students who study there. They are enthusiastic and confident about the skills they are learning, whether or not they plan on continuing their study of music.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Bring a more well-rounded education to thousands of low income children in middle Tennessee.
Ways to make it better!
  • One thing I'd also say is that... I'd like the opportunity to volunteer with this organization, in a capacity that does not involve teaching music lessons.

I have served as a volunteer teacher since it's doors opened. It is a marvelous place to participate in and observe a child's growth in the scholarship and artistry of music. When I was a full time teacher and sometimes questioned if music in my classroom was having any effect, my weekly after-school WOS sessions reaffirmed the power music has as a discipline & inspiration for children & youth. Many hours given by so many musicians in such a nurturing atmosphere has impacted generations across Nashville communities. It is a model for any city seeking to access community/professional music resources for its underserved clientele (school aged children & youth).

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... recitals given by students across many years where they meet and surpass goals they have set.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... seeing a new or re-newed 'spark' in a child as they embrace discipline and produce a beautiful musical product. It is a marvelous experience for them AND the audience.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... supportive and professional; of the highest quality.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide improved infrastructure by hiring needed development & management positions to spread the work load.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... holding firmly to the original mission envisioned by W. O. Smith.

W.O. Smith school opened my eyes to the power of giving and reaffirmed my opinion on the power of music. I was a volunteer teacher for a year and I saw 1st hand how much this school does for for the kids. It was awesome to see the gleem in my students eyes when they "got it". When they were able to play the part they thought was too hard or learn their favorite song. I had students who really didn't have much and were having trouble at home, and their lessons were a tiny escape from all of that. When I think of Jonah, Lynn & the staff, I smile. They are doing GREAT work.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... seeing the improvement in the students musical ability & attitude.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... seeing the joy of the students faces.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... awesome. Very dedicated.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... change Nashville youth for the better for a very, very long time!
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... my current job would've allowed me the time to continue teaching at W.O. Smith.

WO Smith Music School is a dynamic organization that fills a great need in Nashville. Studies have shown that children who participate in arts and music programs have better self-discipline and greater self-confidence, and unfortunately, public school systems across the country are cutting arts and music programs due to lack of funding. WO Smith Music School helps to close that gap by offering an array of music lessons to children for next to nothing. Thanks to WO Smith Music School and the more than 200 volunteer teachers, children are learning to play a musical instrument, are learning music theory, are singing in a choir and are gaining exposure to the world of music. Without WO Smith Music School, hundreds of children would not have the opportunity to participate in such a program.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the positive impact that the school has on the children. The school pulls together master musicians to share their talent with children in a welcoming, positive environment. I know that children are benefiting daily.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... replace its instruments with new ones; hire more staff to further the school's mission and establish programs within each area public school.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... the small number of staff that execute the school's mission. With over 200 volunteer teachers and twice that many students, the staff of three is pulled in so many different directions.
