Issues: Animals, Environment

Location: T-2 Fort Missoula Missoula MT 59804 USA

Mission:

The mission of The Vital Ground Foundation is to protect and restore North America''s grizzly bear populations by conserving wildlife habitat.

Programs:

VitalGround is currently fundraising to secure its first two land acquisitions withingrizzly bear/wildlife linkage zones in northwestern Montana via the Cabinet-PurcellWildlife Linkage Initiative. The projects were identified by the Private Lands Working Group, an internationalteam of state and federal wildlife agencies, wildlife biologists, and NGOs. In theU.S. these are Vital Ground, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), andMontana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; in Canada these are the Trans-border GrizzlyBear Project and the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.

Ofthe land acquisition priorities the Private Lands Working Group has set in theCabinet-Purcell Wildlife Linkage Initiative working region of northwesternMontana, two properties rank highest due to: 1) their current availability onthe open real estate market; and 2) their ripeness for development if sold tonon-conservation buyers and the subsequent threat of linkage disruption andwildlife displacement. The first property is located in the northern tier ofthe USFWS Cabinet-Yaak Grizzly Bear Recovery Zone along U.S. Hwy. 2, less thanone mile southeast of the Yaak River-Kootenai River confluence. The secondproperty is located just south of the Recovery Zone near Montana Hwy. 200, 2.5miles northwest of the Bull River-Clark Fork River confluence. Both propertiesadjoin Kaniksu National Forest lands.

While I haven't had any personal experience with Vital Ground, I support & applaud any group that works to protect habitat for our wild creatures. Our wild lands are disappearing at an alarming rate, Vital Ground plays a vital roll in creating open space for our large predators to live freely.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

acquire more land to add to current Vital Ground purchases, providing more protection for habit for bear & all wild creatures.

I think this is a great organization with an admirable cause. I have had nothing but a positive experience with Vital Ground.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a huge difference for the grizzly well-being.

The majestic and misunderstood grizzly bear has almost vanished from the lower 48 states. Vital Ground's mission is to preserve what is left of this animal by purchasing private lands and using them towards grizzly re-population. Their work - and the organization's founder, Doug Seus - have inspired me to do my own work towards educating people about bears and helping to do away with the many of the old misconceptions. A fantastic organization whose work is critically important!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My own education about bears and learning of their importance. Now seeing how greatly misunderstood they are, it has become my passion to help preserve them. Education is key!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

That they are working to re-establish the fading grizzly population to the United States. Vital Ground founder, Doug Seus, and his bears have showed me first-hand that peaceful co-existence is possible.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Courteous, kind, informative, and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Restore a dying population of animals and create educational programs to help ensure the future survival of grizzlies.
