The IRS has challenged all five Verland entities tax exempt status. Do not use or support any of these entities until management is replaced.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Terminate the management team

Verland has continued to neglect basic reporting of controlled substance losses to the PA Department of Health and DEA since 2009. Verland continues to make continued errors in patient care, record keeping and investigations of abuse. A Verland CLA resident died in the SPring of 2013, due to getting the wrong food consistency.

Fortunately some parents have decided to sue Verland and bring these problems to light. I applaud the bravery of such parents, especially in light of the eviction of Larry Snyder in 2007, due to his father complaining to the State about his son's 16 broken bones over ten years in Verland's "care".

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Revoke their license and have the State take over management of the facility until a proper management team can be put in place.

The Pittsburgh area is blessed with many outstanding nonprofit organizations, especially those that provide services to people with disabilities. Verland Foundation stands out even among that great group.

In my work, I have the opportunity to visit many nonprofits. The people of Verland
are driven by their hearts in providing service, and driven by their brains in taking care of the business and financial aspects of operating a successful organization. That’s what makes a great nonprofit!

The true dedication of the staff starts at the top. Carol Mitchell leads an organization that provides the best possible homes and services to its clients so that they can enjoy rich and full lives. It’s all about serving humanity, and recognizing that all of us, with or without disabilities want to live in a comfortable and safe home where we feel we are part of a family. That’s Verland!
