I am an ex-employee of VAANI. I have over 10 years of experience of working with Deaf people, I can confidently say that VAANI is one of the few organizations that have understood the complete implications of childhood deafness and have have gone ahead to devise strategies that help families of deaf children and professionals cope better with the disability. Another outstanding aspect of VAANI is that everyone in the organization keeps and open mind and listen to feedback from the various stakeholders of the project. The management is not afraid to admit they made a mistake and take a different course of action. There have been several instances when during a project evaluation, if it was observed that a particular strategy was not working and based on stakeholder feedback, the team at VAANI have gone ahead and made changes in the strategy. It is unfortunate that at this point VAANI has limited resources. Given the challenges of the disability they are working with and also given the fact that there are very few credible organizations catering to this need VAANI will need to gather more resources to reach out to a wider target group.

VAANI is one of the very few organisations in the world which recognises the worth of deaf children as individuals and supports them as well as their families in bringing meaning to their lives. The Deaf sector is full of organisations which follow (and promote) one over the other form of communication but VAANI supports all possible forms and strategies of communication for deaf children. They believe in providing individual choices for deaf children and families, which makes them a truly rights based organisation. VAANI's approach is unique as they support partners in their own models of practice by building capacity in ways to work with deaf children.

Sangeeta Doloi's review of VAANI: I feel it is easier for hearing people to learn Sign Language rather than making deaf children learn how to speak. This has not worked out in my son's case and I feel that I wasted a lot of time attempting to make my son speak. After my interaction with VAANI, I have realised that Communication is more important in the development of language than speaking. (This review was posted by VAANI, Deaf Children's Foundation staff member on behalf of a mother of a deaf child who served by the nonprofit with her written consent. The mother does not have an email address required for posting a review.)
