I have participated as a volunteer on many occasions with Dadfest, the prostate cancer support group and also helped in the office. I have seen first hand our important their work is with helping prostate cancer survivors in the support group, seeing the peace that comes when a man newly diagnosed with prostate cancer gets to talk to someone who has been through it. I've seen the free prostate cancer screenings and the passion that the volunteers and doctors have for serving men in the community.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I am a nursing student and it has been helpful to see how non-profits serve a critical role in continuing patient care after they leave the doctor's office and how being involved in community events further helps educate patients.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help them more often if I could and encourage more people to donate their time and money.

Review from Guidestar

This active organization has been in existence for 10 years providing support for prostate cancer survivors, promoting community based, focused risk assessment for prostate cancer and advocating a healthy lifestyle and early detection.

Board members and volunteers have personal connections
to the cause of Men's Health and a passion for community service. Among the projects funded by the foundation are original research in the field of cancer detection by ultrasound and invited speakers on topics of interest to the population at risk.

As a urologist treating prostate cancer for 25 years, I remain impressed by the dedication of those who survive prostate cancer to help enlighten other men and their families. This foundation helps provide the information and resources necessary to ultimately make all men survivors and not victims.

The Great!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase it's reach to other cities around the country.

UREF is vigorously pursing its educational mission related to Prostate cancer awareness, education and support are the focus of UREF's mission in education. The mission is accomplished through information on the UREE website, participation in health fairs, providing an annual free prostate cancer screening, and conducting a monthly support group for prostate cancer survivors and their spouses. UREF's signature event is the annual Dadfest that reaches out to the Dallas/Ft Worth community to raise awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of a healthy lifestyle to men's overall health. Another very important mission is research. With the internationally leadership of Urologist-Oncologist Dr. Pat Fox Fulgham, UREF has participated in research to attempt to identify markers in prostate biopsy tissue that would identify men who are at risk for recurrence prior to treatment. This small organization is very productive thanks to their volunteers and a dedicated board.

As a Prostate Cancer Survivor, UREF has effectively assisted me in reducing my anxiety level related to this disease.

Ways to make it better...

UREF is totally focused on its mission and its leadership provides continuing oversight of the organization. Resources are carefully controlled and committed and waste of resources is non-existent.

I have attended meetings of this organization ever since my husband was treated for prostate cancer. A great organization that keeps survivors up-to-date by offering well organized monthly meetings with an interesting mix of speakers and subjects.
The organization is also actively involved in
prostate cancer awareness and screening: a yearly golf tournament and a 5K run (at DadFest, together with family fun events and screening).
This all is topped by funding research.
UREF is a member of the North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition (NTxPCC), building a powerful group for prostate cancer in the area.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Attending some of the monthly meetings offered through the sponsored Us TOO Texas Health Presbyterian support group, talking to other survivors and spouses. Talking to men (and their families) during the DadFest screening.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Expand active involvement of the support group members in awareness events. Strengthen ties with NTxPCC.

DadFest has become a tradition for me in that I have worked as a volunteer for the past six years in one capacity or another. The event continues to improve each year and is a fun, family oriented event which educates fathers about prostate health, entertains children with fun competitions in rock climbing and 50 yard dashes, and brings families together as a time of bonding by welcoming participation by the entire family. The prostate exams provided on site areinvaluable at giving men an opportunity to have the annual check and bring attention to a potential problem before it becomes a major problem. It is a valuable public service in healthcare.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Encourage more families and fathers to participate in this event. It would be nice to have this event rise to the level of the Komen foundation.

UROLOGY RESEARCH & EDUCATION FOUNDATION, provides: free prostate cancer screenings, educates physicians and the community about prostate cancer and other urologic cancers, provides the meals and speakers for the monthly prostate cancer support meeting at THD.

A major
community event is coming up this weekend at Dadfest where a free screening will be offered, talk to community about the importance of early diagnosis and give families an opportunity to participate in a fun event and honor DAD.

Other events this year include:
o Golf tournament in September where each year a prostate cancer survivor who is a supporter in the community is honored; this year it will be Scott Murray.
o In October, an event at the Frontiers of Flight Museum where Dr. Fulgham’s father, a prostate cancer survivor and Air Force fighter pilot and scientist will give a talk.

The Foundation is busy in the community providing support and education for men and their families.

This is a wonderful foundation that has put some serious focus on a terrible disease. With the help of Pat Fulgham and Angie Clark and the members involved with the UREF there is a constant effort on making men aware of the need to be checked and checked early for prostate cancer. This cancer has inflicted 5 members of my immediate family and I would like to see a cure to this affliction. With the great people involved in the foundation (and our 5k run and golf tournament) as well as many other seminars and educational programs, the foundation is doing its best towards awareness.

One of the most important charities of awareness of Mens cancer risk.
1 in six men get prostate cancer.
1 in 23 die from it.

Early testing can reduce that number.
