Urban Habitat is one of the few organizations working across sectors and across issues to empower low-income people of color. The organization has been at the forefront of the social justice movement making the case for equity and reframing the debate to ensure that race and class are a central part of the conversation.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... securing over $200 million for low-income transportation needs (Lifeline program); in successfully campaigning to block a fare increase for youth, seniors, and disabled in Alameda and Contra Costa counties; in working with the City of Richmond to draft a green economic development resolution; and in mobilizing a broad multi-sector coalition that succeeded in convincing state legislators and the Governor to stop a $20 million annual cut to AC Transit.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The calibre and commitment of its staff.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Highly-qualified, energetic, and optimistic. They were very committed to making change in the region and the country.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... hire enough staff to win better transportation access for low-income people; to facilitate the development of decent, affordable housing; to make quality, living-wage jobs a reality; prevent toxic dumping and other operations in low-income communities that cause health problems; and ensure that development does not displace low-income people of color.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... a lack of unrestricted funds that can support general operations; and growing a large base of individual donors to support the work.
