I have been actively involved with the U.S. Wolf Refuge since 1984. Since that time I have personally interacted with every animal that has come under their care. It was a real struggle in the beginning but it is now a highly recognized charity all across the country. I have helped with their fund-raising, animal care, transportation, public events, and their education programs. I first got involved with them when I got what I thought to be a Norwegian elkhound - I later learned that it was a wolf-hybrid. Their assistance and knowledge was most valuable. In the years since then I have learned so much about these magnificent animals, and the various issues involving both wolves in the wild and captive wolves. This organization has saved the lives of hundreds of these animals, and educated literally thousands of people about the real truth concerning these highly misunderstood creatures. The results of their efforts has produced an organization that I am very proud to be associated with. Like virtually all charities today, their budget is significantly smaller than in previous years and the Green Choice Awards prize would be appreciated beyond words. They have no salaries and over 98% of their revenue is spent directly on the animals.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
.... the improvements in the quality of life of all the animals that have been at the Refuge, and their widespread involvement in the various wolf recovery efforts around the world.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
.... not change a thing!!!!
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
....all the wonderful animals and people that have I met and come to know. It has been a life-changing experience for me with personal rewards that exceeded anything I ever imagined..
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
.... a variety of individuals ranging from children to highly-educated professionals. They come from all walks of life with a multitude of various skills that this organization has been able to effectively utilize.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
.... create a world-wide education program that would return the wolf to its rightful place within our ecology, and assist all qualified efforts to restore the wolf to the wild, and strive to eliminate wolves in captivity except for educational purposes.
Ways to make it better...
.... they had a larger budget and were able to accomplish the many projects that were needed but were never able to complete. This would have saved the lives of many more of these wonders of nature.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
.... the widespread misunderstandings and misconceptions about these animals and the effort to make the public realize the real truth about them. Also the budgetary constraints that are a result of the present economic conditions.
One thing I'd also say is that...
.... this is an organization and a mission for which I have a strong passion. It has given me a purpose in my life. My involvement with it will remain for the rest of my life.
