In 1996 my son Doug was diagnosed with cancer - No Way! - It Can't Be - Is all I could think of - We learned in a flash that young adults deal with a meriad of totally different issues from pediatric patients and the general adult population - but no one was addressing those issues - So Doug and our family established The Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults - For 12 years we have been supporting, educating and connecting young adult cancer survivors and their loved ones - Doug and I wrote "No Way, It Can't Be" A guidebook for young adults facing cancer and we at UCF have sent out over 15,000 copies free of charge to individuals and cancer centers all over the country - We continue to empower survivors to advocate for themselves as they navigate the cancer journey.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... so many situations and testimonials from clients - it has been both theraputic and rewarding to help others affected by cancer the way we have been.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... meeting so many couragous and passionate people.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... awesome and inspiring!
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... reach thousands more people and expand our services enourmously. We would be able to focus on services, education and prevention rather than fundraising!
Ways to make it better!
- My experience would have been better if... we could spend less time raising funds and more time helping people - and of course if we could wipe out cancer and close up shop!
- If I ran this organization, I would... stay the course. This organization is helping thousands of people
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... economic hard times.
- One thing I'd also say is that... Being involved in this organization has been a life altering experience - I have learned from every person I have met and from every situation we have faced - passionate and energetic people can accomplish enormous tasks with very limited resources!
