Issues: Children & Youth, Job Training

Location: 16/97A, 1st floor, Vikram Vihar Lajpat Nagar IV New Delhi 110024 India

Mission: A nurturing home for every orphaned child, an opportunity for higher education for every girl and for every adult, the dignity of self-reliance and the desire to give back to society.
Results: Since inception, with the help of many passionate people like you we were able to impact and empower: 291 children in 13 Udayan Ghars across delhi, NCR, Kurukshetra and Jaipur 2678 Shalinis through Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme 8455 women, children and youth through Udayan Care Information Technology and Vocational Training Centers 80 children and 67 families through our Udayan Outreach Programme Also till date we were successfully able to make 39 pairs of Big Friends with Little Friends INTERNING/VOLUNTEERING: WHAT IS IT ABOUT? As an intern, you will have the chance to apply what you have studied by working at the office, having an impact on the structure of the NGO. Psychology, economics, statistics, IT, languages…no matter what is your background, your skills will be needed! As a volunteer you will spend your time with the kids (for international volunteers, criminal background check by your local police is compulsory!), organizing activities, teaching them languages or other subjects, helping them with homeworks or simply just being there for them and enjoy time together by playing or going to the park… Of course you can do both, half of the day at the office and half of the day in a Ghar. You will discuss and decide your specific tasks with your supervisor once arrived, as the situation is constantly evolving and different needs may arise therefore no pre defined job description can be shared. Both you have to get accustomed to the new situation and the staff needs to know you before matching your interests and capabilities to the needs of the kids and Organisation. Keep in mind the differences between India and your home country. All of the international volunteer/interns feel disoriented and often incur into difficulties at the beginning but you will find in Udayan Care all of the support you need. Cultural activities, daily life advices, a lovely staff, the full availability of your supervisor, all of the other volunteers will help you cope with the cultural shock and in a couple of days you will enjoy your experience at best. There are always many interns and volunteers working with us, coming from all over the Globe to share the same experience: France, Japan, Ghana, Italy, Germany, USA, Egypt... The cultural variety will further enhance your staying and you will have many occasions to hang out together. Other opportunities will be about sharing your passions by giving workshops, receiving help for organizing your travels through India, having traditions, Hindi and cooking lessons, international days, receiving support to find the best accommodation according to your requirements… Your volunteering experience will be complete by offering you a chance both to give back and grow in individual capacity. By the end of it, you will probably have friends from all parts of the worlds and know itsy bitsy of all the languages.
Direct beneficiaries per year: With a Vision "To Regenerate the Rhythm of Life of the Disadvantaged", presently there are 188 children across 13 Udayan Ghars, 608 new Shalinis were inducted in the Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme who will live their dream of higher education and 896 women, children and youth were provided with vocational training through our Udayan Care IT&VT Centers.Udayan Care is a Public Charitable Trust, working for the last 19 years, for the quality care of disadvantaged children and women.Appalled by the stark reality of 31 million orphans in India and shocked by the condition of institutions housing them, a few like- minded individuals got together to take serious action. This obsession was the seed which sprouted as Udayan Ghars in 1996 - long term residential homes for orphaned and abandoned children. While our first initiative was the Udayan Ghar programme for orphaned and abandoned children, we gradually worked towards ensuring higher education for girls through the Udayan Shalini Fellowship. In 2004. Udayan Care also initiated an Outreach programme for children affected by HIV, as well the Udayan Information and Technology Centres to improve employability of underserved communities.
Geographic areas served: Delhi, U.P, Haryana, Pujnab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and West Bengal
Programs: Our various innovative Programmes are: 1. Udayan Ghars: long term Residential homes for orphaned or abandoned children who are are nurtured in a simulated family environment from the age of 6-18 years. Through a strategy called L.I.F.E- Living In Family Environment - this ‘Group Foster Care’ model ensures children are loved and cared for by a group of Mentor Parents-socially committed individuals (volunteers) who groom the children with a team of social workers, care givers and supervisors. 2. Udayan Shalini Fellowship Programme - USF Through monetary and mentoring, this programme supports girls from weaker sections of society to continue higher education. Today, we are proud that our girls, whom we call Shalinis, are pursuing fields like Engineering, Medical, CA, Computer Sc, among others. To make them socially aware as well as socially responsible, they have to fulfill 50 hours of mandatory social work. This Programme is currently on in Delhi, Kurukshetra, Aurangabad, Dehradun, Kolkata, Gurgaon, Haridwar and Phagwara. 3. Udayan Care Information Technology and Vocational Training Centres Udayan Care IT&VT Centres enable underserved youth and adults to develop IT and vocational skills to improve employability and livelihood opportunities. At present, we run seven Computer and Vocational Training Centres where we focus on bridging the digital divide and impart business skills to increase the employability of the beneficiaries we work with. 4. Udayan Outreach Programme Through Outreach, we support the educational and nutritional needs of children of HIV+ parents, who are in financial difficulties because of the debilitating illness. Our interventions are at the family and community level. Our counselors counsel children and parents to understand and cope with the illness. Outreach forges hope and inclusion by reducing stigma and adding resources and belief in a successful future. Since inception, we have worked with 80 children and 67 families. We are currently working with each of our Udayan Outreach families to prepare the necessary documentation for them to get their entitlements under the available government schemes and become independent and self reliant. 5. Advocacy Udayan Care also engages in research on the care of disadvantaged children. Through organizing conferences, participating in NGO networks, developing policy recommendations, we ensure the protection of child rights. We played a leadership role in setting up "Justice for Children: A Policy-Thought Network" an association of NGOs and government members for protection and advocacy of child rights. 6. Volunteer & Internship Programme By encouraging and motivating civil society to participate voluntarily in our Programmes, we enable them to actively advocate for child rights and serve society in a sustained manner. Udayan Care’s Internship Programme provides a great opportunity for students to learn and gain on-the-job exposure to the not for profit sector. The objective of the Programme is to provide students with intense, practical opportunities to learn and experience the constituents of the non-profit sector, as well as contribute in their areas of interest. 7. Big Friend Little Friend Programme The Big Friend Little Friend Programme focuses on the emotional needs of adolescents between the ages of 12-17 years in the urban context. It is a unique initiative born out of our belief that adolescents in the age group of 12-17 years from underprivileged communities need emotional support and companionship. It is a medium which connects volunteers (Big Friends) with children from underprivileged backgrounds (Little Friends).” Since inception, in a short span, we have seen 39 pairs of Big Friends with Little Friends being formed and are looking for many more such pairings this year.

I am one of the beneficiaries of Udayan Care, Ghar(HOME)Programme. I have successfully put my personal traumas behind and decided to move ahead in life with the help of wonderfull mentor mothers  My career progressed through a positive mental health program; good education and professional training. A degree in Hospitality Management from Rai University won her a place in the workforce in the UK. On my return, I joined the prestigious Oberoi group of hotels, moving later to the Country Inn group of hotels. My heart was however in the career that I subsequently chose – “Making a difference in the lives of those deprived of the joys of childhood.” Everything else followed: the Swasthi Foundation for Education out of my UK savings; the switchover from the glamorous hospitality industry to the more meaningful NGO sector. I formally joined Udayan Care as a resource mobilizer and also Executive Assistant to the Managing Trustee. Having been a beneficiary of Udayan Care in the past, my thought process is more in tune with the children in the Udayan Care homes than those who have never experienced such traumas (works very differently) and my decisions have made a positive impact at the grass root level.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the excitement that comes from making a difference in children’s feelings and the understanding of all that goes on around them.
