I was the development director/activities coordinator of the Tri County Humane Society for 2 years. It is truly an organization with a huge heart. It's not an impersonal, cold operation. Rather, it is an organization with humble, grassroots beginnings and a genuine love of each individual animal and their story is evident from having worked closely with the board of directors, staff and volunteers. The kind of no-kill work that Tri County does every single day, year in and year out, is truly an inspiration to both dedicated and casual animal welfare enthusiasts. There are so many stories of homeless and neglected animals to be told - Tri County not only tells these stories, but makes sure that each one has a happy ending.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the way each animal that comes through the doors is treated. One of my own dogs, Henry, is from Tri County. He was rescued from Broward County Animal Control (where he had little to no chance of finding a home before being put to sleep) and brought to Tri County scared and alone. He was given care and love. He is a Chihuahua with special needs and a penchant for biting people he doesn't know due to a difficult past. Tri County takes chances on animals like Henry every single day.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

recommend that the board of directors work together in a more cohesive fashion - they need to really understand how the shelter works day to day and possibly even bring in a professional to help assess the financial needs and long term goals of Tri County. The shelter has the potential to become a household name in South Florida and not only continue to save animals but also to educate the public about spaying and neutering, animal kindness and the little differences we can all make.
