This is my favorite place ever. The animals are extremely well cared, the staff is professional as well as compassionate, and many animals find homes. Not only do they have on-site vet staff, but they also have great support from volunteers. Their enthusiasm is contagious and I'm very glad that I caught it. The support from the community and from volunteers really proves that there is something wonderful going on at this non-profit.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the transformation of animals: they've gone from hairless and abused to a full coated happy, healthy companion animal. the sheer number of animals adopted. the compassion for animals, they'll take a dog from the kennels and let them hang out up front for a day. Usually they just sleep by their feet, but I know it means a lot to these dogs.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

maybe call in volunteers or something? I don't know how to do this, but a problem is that many volunteers will come in one day and then literally no one will come in on another. So then the dogs will have to go in their kennels, which makes it harder on the staff who've got enough on their hands already.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

working with the animals, walking them etc.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

wonderful. Although, some volunteers (they're almost all younger) really annoy me when they don't do much work. I guess I just wish everyone was willing to do the hard work (scooping poop etc).

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build more rooms to take in more animals.

Ways to make it better...

I had more varied activities. I guess I could train to get different duties besides animal care but with schoolwork and my job I don't have too much time. So, that's not really their fault. You just have to show initiative in this organization if you want to do something. They're not going to bring it up. Also, it drives me nuts when people say "where are the puppies?" Usually we don't get puppies in, and then they're gone really fast when we do. So it really breaks my heart when I see older dogs that need homes and then the people who are only interested in puppies leave. A huge problem is updating the website. The people who take the pictures (volunteers I think) don't update so people really don't know what's available. There should be a list of people who sign up to work on the website whenever. Then whenever they come in, they should bring a printout of the website, then cross out ones that have already gone home, then confirm it with Laura or a vet tech, then take pictures of the new ones. The website is probably the biggest thing that could be improved.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the website. the overwhelming amount of animals that come in. people who only want puppies and won't consider adopting an adult dog. "kitten season" oh my!

One thing I'd also say is that...

TAHS rocks.

I enjoy volunteering at the Toledo Humane Society. The staff really cares about the animals and provides them with the best care possible. The other volunteers are friendly and take great pride in caring for the animals.

My teenage daughter and I have been volunteering at the Maumee Humane Society location (TAHS) for some time now. We do everything from foster animals that need a temporary, loving home to walking dogs and to just giving some good lovin' where needed. Not only is it time for my daughter and I to bond but we get a lot of satisfaction knowing we are helping. The love we get back from the animals is reward enough. I feel with all the improvements that have been happening recently, the facility is looking better then ever. If you love animals and are not already a volunteer, you should really look into becoming one. To the staff of the Toledo Area Humane Society and all the volunteers, know you are appreciated and keep up the good work.

THS should be a template for animal shelters around the globe. We are fortunate to have the third oldest Humane Society in NW Ohio. I am a volunteer at the Toledo Humane Society and get so much pleasure out of Monday mornings I wish everyone would try volunteering...if not here...someplace where they can see positive results for their efforts. The THS staff is kind, caring, and always trying to build a brighter future for animals. With all the negative news in our 24/7 media coverage... working at the Humane Society is like a beam of sunshine on Monday morning. The community outreach programs are very meaningful. THS volunteers at other charities...and always with a genuine smile! This is a group that leads by example. Lora at the front desk has the right words for every phone call, Jodie is an angel! Everyone should have a supervisor with her capabilities. NR....I wish he could be bottled and sold as an "Attitude Elixer"! Mary engages volunteers in a friendly including manner (because everyone has something to give). Most important is Jim - the maintenance man. Jim works above and beyond the call of duty..adopting kittens, redirecting pipes, grading the lawn...Jim is amazing! The front office staff is always out there pitching for pets! Don't get me started on the cruelty division officers! They are the most heroic people I know. What I am trying to tell you is that the Toledo Humane Society is a small facility with the biggest heart you can imagine! THS is more than the sum of its building and bricks...it is a group of dedicated, good human beings who get up every day, walk dogs, rescue cats, do the right thing...and then do it again, and again, and again. Thank youfor a chance to BRAG about the very best Toledo has to offer...I wish every community had a Humane Society like ours, and so do the animals.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many adoption events

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make a Jim Appreciation Day. I would give the staff bonuses and take them out to lunch as a surprise "just because". They all give so much, it's nice to remind people they are appreciated.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the benefits for beautiful lonely animals who just want someone to love them.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

splendid. No exceptions. Dr. Deb is beautiful inside and out.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Buy the old Hickory Farms building, get industrial washers and dryers, stretch out (yea!!!), give the staff a raise, do more to educate about pet ownership and animal welfare and generall just be themselves on a JUMBO scale!

Ways to make it better...

we didn't have people who are doing community service. Some of them are just lazy and in the way. They don't want to be there and should be doing something else. Sorry - I don't feel like they add anything.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Kitties! Haven't they noticed from the media how unpopular it is to have 8 kids and no visible means of support? Someone needs to talk to them about the birds and bees.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Thand you THS for giving me the chance to help.

Wonderful organization!!! They are very caring and compassionate and provide top quality/care for their animals. Not only do they go above and beyond their duties to help the animals, they reach out to rescues in the Tri State area placing animals in rescues who are considered not adoptable through the shelter rather than the horrible other option of euthenizing.. So many precious lives are saved every year due to their dedication to the animals. Their cruelty department is top notch and MANY MANY dogs/cats are saved from the horrible hands of man every year and they are rehabilitated and either put up for adoption through the shelter or will go onto find their forever homes through another rescue organization. God Bless them!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The strides they make everyday trying to make the shelter as homey and comfortable as can be for the animals as they wait for their forever homes..

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Very helpful/caring staff.. They work so hard to reach out to the community and help provide a safe/secure environment for the homeless pets in the community

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Wonderful!! I work mainly with animal care, but the operational staff is wonderful too..

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build a new and LARGER facility to help more animals.. Maybe a dog park where all of the community could share in the love of animals..

Ways to make it better...

nothing could make it better..

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

working with the extreme number of precious homeless animals coming in the door everyday.. They work their hardest to make sure every animals receives quaility care..

I have been a volunteer at the Humane Society for many years. I am so happy about the changes in how they take care of the animals. The open cat rooms are wonderful!! The cats and run around and play and are not treated like prisoners locked in those little cages. Cats need lots of exercise to keep happy and healthy. The dogs get to run together now to have play time and group socialization. Dogs are pack animals so it's important to them to have play time with other dogs. I think the Humane Society shows that they really understand the needs of animals while they're at the Shelter. They understand that pets need more than just food and water, that they need love, exercise, training and to be kept in as open and homelike settings as possible. I wish they had more room and exercise space for the animals.

Build a new shelter for the animals and have space to have educational programs and training programs.

My teenage daughter and I volunteer almost every weekend, we wish it could be more! These people are wonderful! The staff is caring and always available if you have a question. We enjoy walking the dogs, and social visits with the cats & kittens. It has helped us both to learn more about animal care and the process of adopting animals. I always suggest to family and friends to check out the Humane Society before getting a new family pet. We adopted a Beagle after we were volunteering there only about a month. She had been through alot by the time we got her. She is now a loving, loyal addition to our family! So you never know! In addition to volunteering at a great organization, you could also be adotped by your own new best friend!

I've been a volunteer with TAHS for several years now, working with dogs, and I'd recommend it to anyone. This is a great bunch of people, staff and volunteers alike, who are carrying on a 120 year tradition of service to the community. I'm proud to be even a small part of that tradition and I wish I could give them more time. If you're looking to find a pet, TAHS is an excellent source. If you're looking to volunteer or make a charitable contribution, your time and money are well spent here.

My daughter talked me into volunteering 2 years ago when she turned 10. That was one of the best things we have ever done together! TAHS is the most amazing place to volunteer. The animal care staff works so hard and the volunteers are needed to help with many of the daily needs of the animals. It is heart breaking to see the "little" sad faces behing the bars, but when they get adopted and you have been involved, it is the most amazing feeling. You tend to get attached to many of the animals that have been there for awhile and when they go home- everybody is talking about it! I wish I could come everyday! My love for animals and taking care of them here is great therapy. My co-workers probably think I am obsessed because I am always asking for supplies or collecting newpapers (for the puppies). TAHS needs everyones support. Even if it is only a few hours, every little bit helps- those "little" sad faces behind the bars. Please Volunteer!

This is such a wonderful organization that has helped so many animals in need throughout the area. From Dogs, cats, horses and many other neglected cases, the Humane society speaks out for those who cannot. I started volunteering last summer feeding, walking and transporting just to name a few. I wish that I could do more and my heart goes out to all of those who do not have a home during these tough times.
