I'm proud to say that The Sportfishing Conservancy is still creating dramatic change nationally. They are continuing to redefine success on the water. They have affiliations with groups all over the country and are actively seeking to reach common ground with activists and recreational fishermen.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The changing landscape of dialogue regarding conservation on the water.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Show those responsible for funding how quantifiable the results of positive change would be if the plans proposed by The Sportfishing Conservancy were implemented.

I think what The Sportfishing Conservancy has done is inspiring -- No Motor Tournaments, Warden's Stamps, No-Wear Campaign, etc. What they have planned in the near future is going to be revolutionary. They have proven themselves capable of creating positive change in the area of conservation of our natural resources. I'm eager to see what they implement next as conservation becomes a more integral part of our every day lives.

This group is great. They understand that conservation and recreational fishing are compatible and work for realistic solutions. We need to find the middle ground between catching (and killing) every fish and turning the ocean into an aquarium. Too often rec fishermen are too busy yelling to work with the conservation community which is trying to maintain adequate fish populations -- so we can continue to fish.

California now has a Warden Stamp due to the efforts of this group - the stamp will buy equipment.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They understand that solutions have to be practical - not 'ideal' because people still need to drive, eat, etc.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Show that recreational fishermen are deeply concerned about the environment, introduce more kids to fishing (nature deficit disorder solution), help clean up the ocean.

California fishermen and hunters have long complained about the way Sacramento has treated wardens. Now we as sportsmen have the chance to put our money where our mouth is and thanks to Spotcon we have a way to support them.

Sportcon did a tremendous job on AB 1442 it will among other things allow the Department of Fish and Game to offer a “Warden’s Stamp,” generating funds for under-funded programs that help train and equip state wardens.

No Wear: The anglers I spoke with about this issue find having to wear their licenses inconvenient. When the wind picks up the license whips about and generally gets in the way. It can also be forgotten when taking off a jacket or changing shirts, opening up the possibility of being cited for noncompliance.

Thanks to the great work or Sportcon Effective March 1, 2010, fishermen can leave it in their wallet, the possession of a fishing license is required but the clearly visible display will no longer be an issue.

We need more TV like shows about recreational fishing historically start and end with the words “Nice Fish” uttered with the requisite southern drawl. “Reel World Conservation” has attempted a different approach and while maybe not quite as “stylish” as other outdoors shows, will try to deal with what it takes to ensure that there continue to be both “nice fish” and “nice fishermen” around for a long time to come. I would love to see more.

get the message out that fisherman are not killing machines, we respect and conserve in our areas or target.
