I have the privilege of being appointed to the Advisory Board of the Patient Institute in San Antonio, TX. Over my 2 years of volunteering I have seen the Institute expand its valuable work to many areas in the community. The focus of the Institute is to educate the community, school children, college and university students and so forth about how to navigate through the complicated US health care system. They also provide education on health and wellness and many other topics that inform about keeping both physically and psychological well.
They have developed a course for pre - med and allied health students which covers topics such as business practices, finance, ethics, health and wellness and a raft of other topics which will assist these students to understand how to manage their lives in the health care arena.
The principles of the Patient Institute are kind and caring and very focused on improving the knowledge base of those they present to. This is always done in a in a very understanding and positive manner.
It is a pleasure to be associated with the Patient Institute.

The Patient Institute is different in that it aims to empower not only the patient, but the patients support group, creating a community of care and education. The Patient Institute is not only educating the community about healthcare, but it is redefining the healthcare culture by emphasizing the agency and importance of the patient. The patient comes first, and health should never be considered a commodity. With The Patient Institute guiding and helping to educate patients, we can become a healthy and empowered community.

Helping people find a primary care physician. Teaching how to talk to your doctor. Providing the tools to navigate problems and visits to the doctor's office, a hospital stay, or an ER visit. These are only a few ways the Patient Institute helps individuals find their way through the complicated health care system. And new doctors, medical students and other health professionals also benefit through Patient Institute train the trainer programs that will ultitmately help and empower patients. We are lucky to have such a great non-profit organization in Bexar county!
