VaHomeschoolers is an important support to homeschoolers around Virginia. Their Web site, www.vahomeschoolers.org, has tons of information on how to start, where to find local support and to answer all the questions that come up for new and experienced homeschoolers. They have a Web site, help line, a great member magazine and a Facebook page. All created and maintained by their all-volunteer staff. I have volunteered with the organization for seven years, mostly helping with the VaHomeschoolers Conference and Resource Fair (this year, taking place March 22-23 in Glen Allen, VA) and have found the many sessions informative and fun. The resource fair has the best used resource sale around and many interesting exhibitors. I buy my math curriculum there every year. The organization's lobbying efforts on the behalf of all the state's homeschoolers have contributed to keeping homeschooling available here with a minimum of paperwork and hassle. Virginia would be a very different place to homeschool if the volunteers at VaHomeschoolers were not here to support the state's ONLY fully inclusive homeschool support organization.

The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers is fully inclusive, member directed, and run by dedicated volunteers whose only agenda is supporting homeschoolers. Having volunteered with VaHomeschoolers for over 10 years--including six years on the board of directors--I can say that the people who serve are of the highest caliber. Thoughtful and proactive, they strive to protect and promote homeschooling in the Old Dominion, without partisan taint or dilution by non-homeschool issues. VaHomeschoolers has done a great deal to improve state homeschool law by writing legislation and seeing it through to law. The group has also provided immeasurable support for innumerable families, through its top-notch website, through a high-quality print publication, and via events like seminars and conferences. Though I retired as a key volunteer over four years ago and my children are grown, I still try to lend a hand now and then, and I have nothing but praise for the directors and volunteers who put so much into this organization, without expectation of anything in return.

Yes! I gained tremendous amounts of skill and experience--which translated brilliantly to my resume when I returned to the workforce as my children matured.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
Like I was valued, had much to contribute, and that my voice was heard. Also, that I was part of a caring community of proactive people who have our children's best interest in mind.
