The Nature Generation reaches thousands of kids and inspires them to care about the planet and to take action in their communities . Check out their website for free green games or take their green reading challenge and you might win a Kindle!

NatGen does great work and is fun to partner
with as well!
In just nine years this nonprofit has really made a difference in the lives of children.
I am proud to be a Board member.

Newton Marasco Foundation is a motivated and vibrant organization with a passion for their mission to work collaboratively on issues related to environmental stewardship. It is the dedication of staff and volunteers that assure my contributions are used wisely and efficiently on programs that I care about. NMF is at the top of my list for donations throughout the year and end of the year. It is a pleasure to know that I am helping to make a difference.

As a student you are always looking for opportunities to expand your knowledge base and The Nature Generation has given me that opportunity. I learned how to help out more than yourself and how your environment is your greatest indicator of your standard of living. I learned this during the Trail to Better Water Quality project(and still am) and i hope to benefit more from it. It couldn't have been done without the help of The Nature Generation

As a high school student, finding non profit organizations that allow you to be a leader and not a follower is difficult. The Nature Generation offered me the opportunity to not only participate, but take the reins of a project detailing water quality in a local watershed. Working with a few fellow students, I was immersed in foreign jargon that soon became second nature and often found myself standing in the middle of a stream on a beautiful day carrying wide nets, monitoring equipment, and a turbidity tube. Romping around in my oversize boots is only one of the perks of working on this project. I get to promote sustainability with children at an age that thrives on engaging activities that often occur in the beauty of nature. The Nature Generation combines the efforts to conserve nature with the childlike curiosity that inhabits so many environmental enthusiasts, creating a highly effective program for the next generation, the Nature Generation.

I have been involved with The Nature Generation (formerly the Newton Marasco Foundation) first as a part-time emplioyee, then as a volunteer, and not as an Advisory Board Member. When I was in high school, I was inspired to want to major in Environmental Science in college because of the class that I took. It was interative- focusing on current environmental issues and getting student OUT of the classroom and into the natural environment. This class made me realize that you cannot make people care about the environment by lecturing to them. You must get them into the environment and let them make the conenction themselves. Education needs to be real and it needs to be relevant. This is one of The Nature Generation's principles- to get students excited about the environment by getting them involved and out in the environment.

I have worked with Newton Marasco Foundation (NMF) for several years now- first as an employee, then as a volunteer and now as a board member. NMF actively promotes an appreciation of the arts and the environment through several of their programs. One in particular that I have been intimately involved with is the poster contests at Loudoun Valley High School. Each year, NMF works with the graphics arts students (and other students who want to participate) on a contest. The students are asked to prepare a poster that will represent a specific NMF event or program. What is unique about this ocntest is that NMF provides the students an experience that very much mirrors client interaction in the "real world". Students are given a set of guidelines and also some freedom to design what they think is best. The posters are reviewed once by a small panel and feedback/changes are provided back to the students. The students then have the opportunity to adjust their work based on the feedback provided. The final posters are then judged by a larger panel and the winning poster becomes of the face of the NMF program/event. I commend NMF for not only promoting a sense of appreciation for the arts and the environment in high school students but for also understanding how important it is that students learn to work in a client environment.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching as the appreciation for the environment grows for high school students.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

professional, fun and hard-working.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do so much. It could expand the Field It program to numerous schools and also expand the Green Earth Book Award program to be a national event rather than a local event.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

I have volunteered with The Nature Generation (formerly Newton Marasco Foundation) for the last 7 years, helping to organize vital fundraising events. This is an extremely well run organization with a deep volunteer pool that consists of the best and brightest in the DC and surrounding areas. As a Project Manager by trade, I appreciate the planning that goes into each event to ensure that volunteers are well informed about what is expected of them and know the schedule well in advance of the event. I truly enjoy every opportunity that I get to volunteer at The Nature Generation events.

I have been volunteering with the Greater Washington Eco-Golf Classic and Charity Auction presented by the Newton Marasco Foundation (NMF) for the past 5 years. This is a fantastic event that brings together educators, Federal government employees, and representatives from some of the biggest environmental, energy, and IT consulting firms in the DC area. I can say that this is one of the best run, well-organized fundraisers that I have been a part of. Last year, the Classic made over $100,000 net...which helped fund environmental education programs for youth in Virginia, Maryland, and DC. I am proud to be a board member and volunteer for this wonderful non-profit organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have also volunteered with the NMF EnGauge It program, where I educated patrons of a local shopping mall about the importance of proper tire inflation and the positive effects it can have on the environment and the wallet. Through this event, I passed out free tire gauges (donated by NMF partner UPS) and educational literature. It was really rewarding to have the look of understanding come across people's faces while I was talking with them.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Every non-profit relies on volunteer efforts...this is how they survive and thrive. NMF should encourage their staff to volunteer at most of their events and help with the planning of the largest events (i.e, the Greater Washignton Eco-Golf Classic). This would keep the staff engauged in the event and take some of the pressure off the volunteers planning the event.

The Nature Generation gets to the heart of two things I care most about: educating children and the environment. I am proud to work with an organization that gets directly involved with youth to pass along a passion for preserving our world. I've been involved for a number of years as a volunteer, Advisory Board Member, and donor. I am also pleased to work on the their behalf at my regular job and partnering. My organization sponsors and partners with NatGen on a number of programs and our leadership has always been impressed with the broad impact we're able to have on our community as a result of the relationship. It's enriching to see the results of my financial and personal engagement in the faces of the children who have had their eyes open to the possibility of a greener future.

The Nature Generation offers me the opportunity to help inspire the next generation to understand and practice sound stewardship of the planet's resources. As an advisor, I am inspired by this meaningful mission. Our three primary means to do this include: the Green Earth Book Award, using the power of story to teach children about our natural environment and the responsibility we all have to protect it, 2) engaging quiz show format games that school teachers use to make learning about energy and environment fun, and 3) creating outdoor classrooms where students learn about and develop an appreciation for the nature that surrounds them. The Nature Generation effectively engages youth from elementary school through high school in important issues from climate change to biodiversity. NatGen's founder is herself one of the most inspiring leaders I have known. She has devoted a lifetime to making a difference in the world of environmental stewardship.

I've volunteered with Nature Generation for over a year, helping with various events and planning class room exercises for grade school children. The experience has been very positive. The people involved with Nature Generation are great, very friendly, open and hard working.
