In 1990, beautiful Pacific Northwest landscapes motivated a diverse group of individuals and corporate citizens to do something to save some of Washington State's natural heritage. They founded the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust to protect the Interstate 90 Snoqualmie Pass highway from the sort of unintended urban sprawl that has followed roads in other great American landscapes. The historic cross-state highway with its classic lumber towns, dramatic mountain scenery and natural recreation areas, right in Seattle's backyard, were a part of Northwest life nobody wanted to lose.

In the past 14 years the Greenway Trust has convened a remarkable coalition of people, representing all major land owners and managers along Interstate 90. The Mountains to Sound Greenway stretches 100 miles from Puget Sound in Seattle to the Kittitas Valley foothills in central Washington. Preservation must consider traditional resource economies as well as salmon and wildlife habitat. Working forests and farms are an important component in the Greenway plan, and so are the needs of the region for commercial and residential expansion. The Greenway Trust works with timber companies, towns and developers to integrate harvest and development with the scenic and natural landscape.

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust has put over 125,000 acres of forests, farms and open spaces into public ownership since 1990.

Trails are being linked so that a person can hike from the Seattle waterfront and head east across Washington state, all on safe, off-road trails.

Twenty five miles of abandoned logging roads in the Cascade Mountains have been erased by young volunteers.

A Greenway environmental education program for 5th through 10th grade students is teaching about the challenge of keeping healthy forests on the edge of a growing city.

The Greenway Trust supports a large volunteer program, bringing volunteers into the forests and mountains to plant trees, build and maintain trails and restore natural areas.
