Montgomery Playhouse is one theatre in the DC area that consistently delivers quality entertainment to a wide range of theatre-going audiences. I am not only a patron; I have worked on MP’s productions with a group of talented and dedicated volunteers over several years. The group’s passion and commitment translates into superior performances that delight their audiences. I consider myself fortunate to be aligned with this ensemble of truly talented performers, loyal and energetic volunteers, and supportive and enthusiastic patrons.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

an effort to provide entertainment to the local community. The feedback from the audiences is always positive.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have them promote themselves more so that their audience numbers could grow.

I have actively been involved with MP since the mid-80s, mostly as a performer, but also several years as a board member. MP is a wonderfully inclusive group that treats new and old members as family. All the volunteers are dedicated and friendly, and working with them in any capacity is a valued experience. The provide quality theatre productions to their audiences, and wonderful experiences for their volunteers. As a volunteer one finds oneself a member of a close-nit social group, but also on the receiving end of the "how to's" of theatre. And all with a smile.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Both as a pleased audience member and a volunteer on productions.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

tighten the ship; probably true for any volunteer organization, but bring structure and process to how they go about their business.

I've been involved, on and off, with the Montgomery Playhouse since the early 1980's. I find the people warm, friendly, and dedicated to creating quality productions and good times for everyone. There's room for people at all skill levels, and plenty of people with expertise, ready to share their knowledge with others. All ages are welcomed. There's good reason why it's the oldest community theater in the area.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my private and professional life.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

put business people in the primary roles on Board of Directors and free the artists to exercise their artistics inclinations. I would run it more like a business.

When I moved to the area several years ago I contacted several local theatres looking for a place to volunteer. The Montgomery Playhouse was the only one that responded back. Since then I have had the honor to work on many shows in many different capacities. I have seen many changes since I have started, from loss of the theatre to performing in a school cafeteria to finding the current homes to perform. It has not always been easy but the Playhouse has found a way to persevere. Even though I have been less active because of my young family I know that whenever the theatre bug bites and I have the time to indulge I will always be welcome at the Playhouse.

Even though I am not up on the stage taking a bow at the end of the show, hearing the applause and comments from patrons lets me know that I have done my job well. My life has been enriched by my experiences at the Montgomery Playhouse and I have met some wonderful life long friends there!

In an organization that has been around this long it is easy to stick to "the way things have always been done". Sometimes change is a good thing. Also, better communication. Since I have been less active l have received no membership requests/info & only the general email volunteer requests. Luckily I was put on an email list or I would get no info about the theatre at all. Contact lapsed members/volunteers once a year to see if they if they still want to be active or not & update your info accordingly.

I first came to MPH 17 years ago when I was lucky to be cast in a dream role of mine. From that one show I found a home away from home that has continued to this day. During the 90's I was very active in all aspects - if I wasn't in a show I wanted to be part of it in any way that I could not only because of the level of talent in all areas but because of the friendships and second family I became part of. Although I have worked for other community theatres, MPH has and always will be my "home" and the work they do never ceases to impress me.

I started to work with the Montgomery Playhouse in 1998 as a way to put down roots after moving across the country. It's a warm and friendly group and the friends I made in "12 Angry Men" are still my friends today.

Now that I have moved away and am no longer working with Montgomery Playhouse, I can see fully how much the work I did with them and the friends I made through MP have meant to me. I emailed the organization about possible volunteer opportunities in response to a mailing sent to the previous owner of my house shortly after I moved to Gaithersburg, MD. I did not know anyone in my new neighborhood, and my family lived far away. I was warmly welcomed by this organization, and I loved working with them so much that I eventually became a member of the board. The time I worked with MP has enriched my life and I will forever be grateful to this wonderful organization.

MP's volunteers are talented and generous people who devote hours upon hours to the craft of excellent community theater. They do so solely out a love for the theater. The theater is the oldest community theater that has been in continuous operation in the Washington, DC area. Times have been tough on such small organizations lately, and MP has not been exempt from this struggle. Even with limited resources, Montgomery Playhouse continues to put excellent productions on stage for the enjoyment of the community.

I have worked on several of Montgomery Playhouse's productions. Putting on an excellent theater production is a rush - one that MP is familiar with. In addition to enjoying the work itself, I also benefitted from the comraderie that working on such shows provides.

This organization lost its theater several years ago and it has been a struggle for it to continue with no dedicated theater space. While MP has continued to put on excellent productions in rented space, the lack of a permanent home has resulted in reduced attendance for these performances, with a related reduction in funding and volunteers. This organization needs funding and a new home. With that, Montgomery Playhouse can no doubt continue to excel for another 80+ years in the DC area.

I recently directed a show for MP and will be directing again for them this summer. I have had a truly positive experience with this group: they are organized, dedicated and genuinely enthusiastic about theater.
They have provided opportunities for the community to participate in all aspects of
theater productions for decades and I hope they continue to do so for decades to come.

I started volunteering with Montgomery Playhouse in 1999. I knew very little about theater. I have volunteered as a techie in many productions since, seen MP through several location changes, and served on the board. It never ceases to amaze at the quality of productions (sets, costumes, acting, lighting, sound) that results from such a dedicated group of people from all walks of life.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing quality productions put on with minimal funding.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find a new performance home where the playhouse can perform to its full potential.

The Montgomery Playhouse has a unique set of volunteers who go overboard to share their expertise and time. All are welcome to come share in the work as well as the fun. Their is a lot of work involved in keeping a community theater live and well, but there is also a lot of satisfaction when a show opens. We need more people to assist in growing the team that keeps it alive and well.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

putting together a top notch theater production that audiences would thoroughly enjoy.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

like to grow the production support and the audience. There are lots of jobs to do, big and small, and you don't have to be an actor to contribute. We need some experts in marketing and business to assist as well.
