I volunteer with several animal groups mostly with cats/dogs. Several times people will need to find their bird a home and really do not know where or who to contact. We will give them information on the Lily Sanctuary. Thank goodness for the Lily Sanctuary who will help anyone with a bird in need. People just do not understand that birds are very needed and live a long time. Birds are not like cats and dogs that live a much shorter live span. The Lily Sanctuary has a great volunteer base of people. These volunteers deal with so many different types of birds. A volunteer spends a great deal of time getting to know the birds. Each bird has his or her own unique personally. As Venette has said they are like two-year-old children forever.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Spending time with the birds.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The volunteers are great. The volunteers are very loving towards the birds.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could build a larger home and have enough to get help out so many other birds that will need help.

The Lily Sanctuary does amazing work with rescue parrots. Many come to the sanctuary traumatized by neglect or abuse. Others are taken in from owners who can no longer care for them for a variety of reasons. Parrots can live a life span up to 80 years, which means a lifetime commitment. The sanctuary is not an institutional shelter; it is a private home that emulates family life where the birds are treated to personalized care, attention and love. Venette Hill works with the parrots to rehabilitate their stress and trust issues with outstanding results. These birds are then placed in the adoption program that has strict protocols to assure they find a good permanent home.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've witnessed improvements of parrots that live at the sanctuary that have had extreme stress, feather picking or biting problems. As they gained confidence in a loving environment the birds became gentle, confident and stopped the stress behavior.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The downturn in the economy has had a devastating impact on funding resources and increase in residents. LS needs a steady source of income to stabilize what has become many small fragmented donations that come in spurts.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Learning about large birds, their behavior, emotional issues and intelligence. The LS has a strong educational program that helps to assure the adopted parrots go to new homes where they live with experienced parrot owners.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Dedicated and knowledgeable. Volunteers work very hard to outreach within the community to gain financial support and visibility. They do everything from cleaning to spending personal time with the birds to assure they get the love & attention they deserv

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Move to a larger facility; pay 2-3 permanent full-time staff members; set aside money to pay for vet bills and medications; create an endowment to provide a solid financial base and source of income should the current become incapacitated.

Ways to make it better...

Pretty darn hard to make it better. How can you top working with amazing animals and dedicated caregivers?

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Many of the permanent residents, birds who are blind, injured or otherwise incapacitated, have life spans that may outlive the current managers of the sanctuary. What will happen to them?

One thing I'd also say is that...

This sanctuary is unique in the personalized care and attention the parrots are given. They are not left alone in a cage all day. They are moved outdoors every day to aviaries where they get natural light and air with more room to move about.
