Koinonia is a wonderful organization with a strong volunteer corps of 60 plus people, working weekly to provide emergency food, financial and clothing assistance to the neediest in the Franconia community of Fairfax County. A great example of a group of people doing much with limited space and resources.

Koinonia serves an amazing number of people in the Springfield/Alexandria region of Northern Virginia. It has a very small staff and a large number of volunteers to provide financial and clothing. It uses its resources very efficiently and effectively, never judging and providing efficient care with what resources it has.

The gratitude that shines in the eyes of persons receiving food, clothing, or other assistance from Koinonia constantly underlines the value and necessity of Koinonia to our community. Koinonia serves the Franconia neighborhood of Fairfax County just outside Alexandria, Virginia. Many families in our neighborhood struggle day by day to meet their needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Middle class families, small businesses, and church congregations that comprise the neighborhood feel for them and routinely channel generous donations of food, clothing, and other gifts through Koinonia, which serves as the intersection between need and neighborly support. Scores of dedicated residents regularly volunteer their service to ensure that needs are met. Volunteers love what they do and are well led by an excellent executive director, assisted by an effective staff of a social worker and office manager. In my volunteer work with Koinonia, I particularly enjoy working with these many big-hearted persons all of whom are motivated by caring and concern. I admire them and am proud of them.

Koinonia has served the Fairfax County, Alexandria, Lee District and Franconia communities for over 40 years with remarkable success. It has been a joy to work with and for the organization over the last 10 years. Our strong faith community supports the outreach and services provided to those who need loving, caring support in times of personal hardship and economic uncertainty.

The Koinonia Foundation, Inc. is a wonderful organization. I first heard about it 8 years ago when joining a local church. I volunteered whenever I could for several years before joining the Board of Directors in 2011. As a former Peace Corps volunteer, I appreciate that Koinonia provides assistance at a hands-on level to those who are in need in our community. Our services keep families and individuals from being hungry, provide warm clothing during the winter months and cool clothing in the summer, help clients to avoid having their utilities impacted when their financial resources are low, and allow them to stay in their homes during months when rent is due, but resourcs are not there. For anyone who cares about their neighbors as themselves, Koinonia is the organization who puts that care and concern into action.

As a board member, volunteer, and donor, I have joined Koinonia in its important mission to provide emergency relief services in the Franconia/Kingstowne area of Fairfax County. Koinonia has a strong relationship with Christian churches in the area, with the local government, and with residents in its service area. Koinonia is proud to be a well-organized, effective, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that meets the immediate needs of people in distress while also encouraging those same people to become self-sufficient. Supporting Koinonia yields tangible impact because we target our resources to people who really need assistance.

I have served on the Board of Directors for the past 3 years but have been involved as a donor and volunteer for about 14 years. It never ceases to amaze me what Koinonia accomplishes each day in our community for those in need with such a small budget and limited space. They have 3 basic services that they provide to needy families in our community of Greater Kingstowne / Franconia: food, clothing, and a financial safety net in the form of rent, utilities and prescripton drug assistance. They are the only organization of their kind in our area and have proven to meet the needs year after year! Koinonia also has seasonal programs for youth in the summer, school supply drives, and holiday programs at Thanksgiving and Christmas with food and toys distributed. I hope to serve with this organization for many years to come.

Koinonia supports families in need in the Springfield/Alexandria area of Fairfax County. The workers and volunteers are supportive, knowledgeable and always quick to assist those in need with food, clothing or other assistance as needed.

My students at Edison High school have organized food and clothing drives and have supported Koinonia activities with volunteers. Everyone we work with is very professional and helpful. This organization helps people in our community when they need it most.

No changes, just pray that they can continue to grow and help more of our community.

Koinonia supports our community so our JROTC class works hard to support Koinonia. Last year we held several events (fundraisers, food drive) and this year we are working on a coat drive already. Everything donated is greatly appreciated and the staff and volunteers are so hard working and kind. For last year's food drive the volunteers came in specifically to process and prepare the items we delivered. My students remarked later about how organized everything was and how well managed Koinonia is.

As a donor I see first hand how organized and professional the organization is. The volunteers and staff are very kind and supportive.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Get them a bigger area to wrok out of. They do so much good for the community but their storage and work areas are so limited.

The Koinonia Foundation provides assistance and support programs for families in need in our local community in Fairfax County, Virginia. Koinonia reaches an amazing number of people in our community with such a small budget. The small staff and huge team of volunteers provide services with such caring and compassion, never passing judgment, and doing the best with everything they have. I am happy to volunteer for and donate to this organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

hearing the thanks expressed first-hand by the clients who access services from the Foundation. For instance, they've just picked up food from the pantry to feed their children; or they've just received a holiday food basket full of extras they'd never be able to splurge for to make a holiday celebration festive, special and meaningful.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase their budget, so they can expand their services; and increase support for their volunteer base so they can maximize volunteer engagement.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

More sense of community with the other volunteers, since the volunteer base is so big. They've just started doing this with a monthly volunteer newsletter, which I expect and hope will continue.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I realized how many people here in my community need assistance.

We had the joyful experience of working with Koinonia to present a free soccer camp for underprivileged children this summer. They helped us reach a number of children on our neighborhood. While participating in this specialized effort we also saw the wonderful everyday impact this organization has on the poor in our community. Our church routinely supports them through donations of goods which brings the wonderful experience of sharing to our congregation.
