Learned of this non-profit organization through work and have participated with several projects for this group. The volunteer staff has great organization skills that make volunteering or donating a pleasurable experience. There has been an increasing need for programs as this, families come for breakfast, education and homework assistance the last 2 Saturdays of each month. And with the tragic economic times were in this non-profit has seen a major increase for there services. Hope this group continues with their service to feed the low income families and supports the community. I for one will continue helping them out when ever I can. Robin Towers, volunteer

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

How well organized it is.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could expand the program through the bay area.

My co-workers and I volunteer through our workplace volunteer organization Gexpro Volunteers. We first started working w/ TKBC in June 2002. The Kids Breakfast Club (TKBC) is a nutrition and learning enhancement program that works with low-income children and their parents in the Hayward, CA area. They supplement school programs by offering services @ their TKBC Saturday Academy where they provide a healthy breakfast, as well as tutoring in math and reading. Our volunteer group immediately began to assist TKBC with a backpack drive that we have supported since. We participated in our first annual sponsorship of one of TKBC's Saturday Academies on March 15, 2003 and have not looked back. This is a wonderful program held on the 3rd and 4th Saturday of each month (in Hayward) and the 2nd Saturday (in Newark, CA)that helps families with children on a reduce or free lunch program by providing them with a healthy meal on a day when they are not at school to get the nutriment they need. Not only does TKBC provide meals and education to the children, but to their parents as well, making them one of the only family-related programs in the area. TKBC has a successful track record of providing comprehensive services for low-income children and their families making less than $18,000/year. Their goal is to help end hunger, improve the overall health and wellness of the children they serve, help parents and families by providing parent education that addresses critical issues such as nutrition, drugs, gang prevention and healthcare and improve access to local health and social services for the children and families served. To this end, TKBC also held college tours for older students of this program. This impacts the way the kids and their parents think about and plan for higher education, helping them make long-term plans for powerful educational goals and life choices. I cannot think of a non-profit that is so worth the time to volunteer for. Our Gexpro Volunteers group will continue to support TKBC at their monthly Saturday Academies, as well as continuing to do annual projects such as the back-to-school backpack drive and annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway. We want to offer as much help to The Kids Breakfast Club as they have ensured that the low-income families in Hayward have a hand to reach out to.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how the children respond to the volunteers who help them with reading and math tutoring and also in the gratification from the parents with the education they also receive from the program.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

keep Mark Salinas as the CEO / Program Coordinator as he has so much knowledge of the Hayward low-income school children and the ideas and knowledge to try to get them assistance.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

knowing that the low-income families are being providing with a healthy meal, as well as education to help them be a responsible member of the Hayward community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

from local high school and colleges, as well as other volunteer groups. Everyone who was involved seems to enjoy their time helping and wanted to be a part of it again.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

wipe out the hunger for low-income children in the Hayward area. They could also establish other pilot programs in surrounding cities to help end the hunger in their school districts.

Ways to make it better...

there were a limited number of volunteers. Sometimes the program has too many volunteers, but since it is unpredictable how many volunteers you'll get each weekend, better too many than too little.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting funding. They need this to continue to help the families they serve, as well as developing more opportunities for other outlying areas.

One thing I'd also say is that...

if there is anything you can do for The Kids Breakfast Club (TKBC) to help them achieve their goals of helping the low-income in the Hayward area, please do so. Just show up once to volunteer at one of their Saturday Academies and you'll be hooked as well as realizing what a terrific task they are providing in the community.
