The Jazz Gallery is definitely one of the most important jazz institutions in NYC.I've been playing there since the place first opened and it has always been a pleasure. As a listener you get a big variety of all the new jazz that's being created and played in NYC.It's places like the Jazz Gallery who keep this incredible art form a live.Their support of creative, non-commercial music is a rare and beautiful thing. They help create and sustain a real jazz community in the city.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

add professional recording equipment so it would be possible to document all the concerts.

The Jazz Gallery is an essential part of New York's jazz community. A listening room that's all about the music and supporting creativity. Considering how many jazz clubs have come and gone over the years, I am grateful for the longevity of this downtown gem!

Tje Jazz gallery not only presents great jazz musicians and funds new works, it has been a major incubator of young talent in NYC. Its audience-friendly, musician- friendly and the room has a very soulful sweet sound...both for playing and listening. Thank you Jazz Gallery for continuing to present fresh music against all odds

The Jazz Gallery is one of the hidden wonders of the New York Jazz world, and it shouldn't be. It nurtures jazz musicians, young and older, and provides them with a forum to work on new ideas, configurations, compositions in a truly cooperative atmosphere. It confers dignity both to its artists and its audience. There has never been an occasion where I have been disappointed in an evening spent at the Gallery, and some of those evenings have been transportive. It has been a privilege to part of that community. Of course, for a long time Jazz lover, it is also a comfort and thrill to see that old piano from Bradley's sitting there, waiting for yet another pair of hands to bring it to life.

That's a hard one. However, the first thing that comes to mind is the evening John Ellis presented his opera piece. He is a dear friend and we are so so pleased that he has been chosen for a residency this year.

I am not sure that I would change much except one day to have an airier space for the musicians and, in the meantime, to tune up the heating pipes during the winter months

The Jazz Gallery provides a unique and otherwise largely absent service in the New York City area by presenting non-commercial art and music on a regular basis, in a loft-style, listening space, through which a true art-music sub-community has been created and subsequently sustained.

The Jazz Gallery is on of my most favorite spaces to go to to play or hear music in the city. The room sounds great and the people who come, come to listen. There are no uninvited bar sounds during the performances; no ice bucket, no espresso machine, no cash register, and most importantly the staff is the sweetest group of people you can find. It's rare that at one venue you meet an owner who's passionate about good music, a sound engineer who's passionate about good sound, and a staff that is supportive and warm. The Gallery meets all these high standards.

The Jazz Gallery is one of the best jazz clubs in New York City. It's status as a non-profit makes it unique, and it takes it's role of nurturing young artists very seriously. I have benefited immeasurably from the advocacy of the Jazz Gallery, playing countless shows there over the years, and presenting two commissions specifically for them. I will always be grateful for what they've done for me personally, and for the jazz scene in New York City generally. They've helped to encourage the growth of so many, and in so doing have played a part in shaping the discourse and the sound of jazz in the current times.

The Jazz Gallery is like a second home to me -when i first came to New York as an aspiring musician, they had a warm and welcoming attitude to young musicians as opposed to many other clubs that I frequented. Their strengths are wide and varied, but if I had to choose three, I would say that one is their belief in emerging artists and their willingness to give someone without any hype behind them a chance to have their voice heard. The second is that this is a place where there is a strong community and camaraderie among musicians who have played there. Community is vital to any field of art progressing forward, and also enables us to see each other's work to prevent "isolationism" as can happen in the art world. Thirdly, the warmth of the staff is really singular - truly like a home. And that feeling is so important to an artist, allowing us to feel comfortable to be themselves personally and artistically, and not feel restricted at all.

Can't think of any changes, just that it continues to expand the meaning of "jazz", foster new work, from experimental to traditional "jazz", and stay open all improvised music.

Jazz Gallery is certainly one of the most precious live music venues of New York City! Every city should have an efficient way to present new talent that pushes the boundaries like this place. Since the inception in 1995, Jazz Gallery has been a major contributor of support for New York's emerging artists. I along with many other great and important musicians got my start at this venue. This place attracts the very demographic that new artists are searching for, and in turn provides a hub for those who crave new, innovative and inspiring music. Non-profits like Jazz Gallery are very few and far between, but absolutely necessary to stimulate our society's culture through live music.

The Jazz Gallery has been the most important place for new improvised music in NYC for a long time. I don't know what we, as musicians, would do without it. They provide a forum for young players/composers as well as established players and composers and have funded projects of mine that would never have seen the light of day otherwise.
