The HSUS is not an animal welfare organization. They are an animal rights organization whose goals are to destroy animal ownership and breeding. They donate less than one percent of their income to animals in need and the majority of their money is spent lobbying legislators to make it impossible for ranchers to continue to raise the food supply for this country. They are under inverstigation for violation of the RICO act. They do not meet the standards to be a 501c charity. They mislead the public and spend their money on photo ops during disasters and then leave town and they sure dont leave the money there to help the rescuers. Please go to HumaneWatch.org and do your own investigating. Search the internet fro Katrina/HSUS and make your own educated choice. Donate directly to local rescue and shelters so the money goes to help the animals.

If you donate to HSUS, you are funneling a chunk of that money to some of the sleaziest professional fundraising companies in the world. Quadriga Art (Google CNN's investigation of them) and Share Group (shut down last year for fraudulent reporting) are two of their many liars for hire. CharityWatch, the Einstein of charity watchdogs (Charity Navigator is the Paris Hilton of the bunch), gives HSUS a D for spending 48% of our taxpayer-subsidized donations on fundraising. Animal rights newpaper Animal People concurs, noting that direct mail solicitations requesting money are fundraising, not charitable services. How difficult is this concept? In 2002, Worth Magazine spent 6 months investigating American charities to find the 100 Best and 10 Worst. Worth's sources included Charity Watch. HSUS was one of the 10 worst. Three years ago, Worth, no longer an investigative magazine, spent around an hour compiling a list of the 10 most financially efficient charities. Their only source: Kim Kardashian aka Charity Navigator. HSUS made that list. When you promote or reward groups like HSUS, you are keeping crooked mail mills and telefundraisers in business; you are betraying the donor public and you are diverting money away from the intended beneficiaries. I'm embarrassed for Great Nonprofits and Charity Navigator.

I am shocked and outraged that anyone would list the HSUS as #1 on ANY list of great nonprofits, or even VALID nonprofits. I won't post links. Instead, I invite anyone who reads this review to simply type the words "the truth about HSUS" into Google, Bing, or any other search engine. Pick a link, and do it wisely-- choose the animal rescue organizations that post about it rather than those you think might be suspect. You'll find your dollars are used for everything BUT animal rescue. The HSUS doesn't operate a single shelter, not one. They charge shelters for their materials, and advocate euthanasia over adoption. Check their statistics. They go hand in hand with PETA, another organization that is anything but advocating FOR animals and would rather see them killed than involved with humans in any way. Search for euthanasia statistics and HSUS and see that they kill most-- not some-- but MOST of the animals turned over to them. If you've got the guts and temerity, you'll end up with images of animals kills en masse at the orders of HSUS. HSUS has tried to clean up its worsening image lately by "doing good," but those efforts don't erase the true face behind this terrible organization. Consider the info on this page: http://gracieland.org/DaneRescue/available/index.html and do your own research before you throw your money into the money-sucking abyss that is the Humane Society of the United States.

We NEED this organization for legislation purposes. They are big and powerful and can change the animal cruelty laws. So if you really love animals you will donate to your local shelters AND donate to this this very effective, hard-working organization. Donating only to animal shelters will not change any laws. We need to get laws changed to make animal cruelty a felony. The HSUS is big enough to do it.

HSUS provides leadership in public policy issues that help companion and food animals live stress free lives. They started a new university to train new shelter managers who will reduce the astronomical numbers of animals euthanized each year. I have met their leadership team and they truely are very passionate about the work they do. Many are vegans. They have a pet friendly work place. They are the real deal. The work they do helps millions of animals in many ways.

This organization helps animals locally by working for (and passing) legislation that protects ALL animals of a certain class, such as animals raised in factory farms or in puppy mills. They also provide direct care to many abused animals. They do a great job, as documented in their very well-written magazine. People who misunderstand their mission do animals no favor by running them down. Who else is working on a national level to prevent animal abuse? Who else is in a position to rescue animals when natural disaster strikes? We need a national organization as much as we need local ones.

HSUS is NOT in the business of animal welfare, but animal rights. HSUS does NOT support your local animal shelter, does NOT actively save dogs and cats (despite their fundraising advertising and their carefully orchestrated photo ops) and DOES spend more of their fundraising dollars funding their pension fund than they do on actively helping animals. They meet their education requirement as a 501c3 with the single phrase "Spay/Neuter your pet." HSUS gets an "F" from charitywatch.org. It's the grade they deserve. Unfortunately, HSUS has a lot of negative impact on animals and people everywhere.

My issue with the HSUS is that through those heart wrenching commercials, they lead people to believe that they are helping homeless and shelter pets. Not that they actually say that but the images imply that. I for one no longer donate to the HSUS but rather donate to shelters and groups that are in the trenches every day helping abused, neglected and homeless domestic animals. I know they show up at every high profile disaster with their beautiful trucks embellished with their logo, but once they perform their "rescue" they dump the "rescues" on local shelters, and within a couple of days i'll either get an email from them or see a new ad on tv asking for a donation to help that effort. shame on you HSUS.

The HSUS is on the front lines of animal welfare, and because of this, they are slandered by groups that profit from animal exploitation. Unfortunately, there is a selection of the general public that believes the lies spread by HumaneWatch. I live in a state that is known as being "puppy mill friendly" and I have seen the Humane Society acting on behalf of these neglected and exploited animals. I know that they do good work, not just for companion animals, but for all animals whose environment and well-being are at the mercy of humans and business. They are an essential organization.
