The Humane Society of the United States has no interest in humane treatment of animals. Instead, they lobby to cripple ALL animal agriculture and drive up the costs of food. They are a Vegan run Animal Rights organization intent on ending animal agriculture and pet ownership completely. They have assets in excess of $200 million dollars and yet spend less than 1% of that money on animal care (even though their misleading ads imply your donation will help pets in shelters). They collected over $30 for the pets of Katrina, dumped the pets in local shelters and left with ALL the money.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

They showed up to help with a disreputable breeder in our area...for two days. We saw not a penny of assistance, and because the case wasn't high profile enough they simply left.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Shut them down completely.

They have actively lobbied against animal agriculture.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have them take an active role in providing funds directly to local animal shelters and humane societies instead of using their money to lobby washington to have their political agenda pushed.

The HSUS is a poor excuse for a "non-profit" organization. When an organization brings in millions of dollars a year from fundraising and pays there CEO over $100,000 a year, yet donates very little to local shelters, I do not consider them a non-profit. At this point they are just like most other businesses who are out to make money. Many HSUS supporters and/or employees fail to gather any facts before advocating for policies and laws to be passed. If the HSUS can afford to post billboards, pay a social media manager, and hire big time celebrities to advocate for causes that make no sense, then the HSUS should be able to support local shelters and truly help animals in need, rather than fill their own pockets!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Policies have been passed because of this organizations' deep pockets. These policies make it difficult for any person involved in agriculture to make a living. Without agriculture.....nobody will survive!!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have them actually use their money to help animals rather than throw it around to simply demise the agricultural industry.

I am not a farmer, I am not a dog breeder or puppy mill owner, I am an average citizen with family pets. I eat meat (both wild and store bought) and I enjoy milk from cows and other products from our agriculture. Any organization that tries to tell me not to own pets, or what to eat or what to wear is not an organization I can support. I support my local shelters and help to find homes for abandoned animals, I buy fishing and outdoor licenses to help manage our wildlife.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Recent legislation that has been both successfully and unsuccessfully passed limiting human interaction with the animals we depend on for companionship as well as other animals for food.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I just wish HSUS would be completely transparent about their agenda and goals for the organization.

This charity has mislead the American Public for years. Look at their donations for a dog named Faye, Michael Vicks Dogs and then for Katrina just to name a couple of examples. In each of these cases they used sad pictures and advertised how to "help" and after the donations were collected they proceeded to "pocket" them and donated very little if any to these causes. Then when CONFRONTED with the facts they did cough up a little more of money but MILLIONS of donations have been sent for causes such as these and to help with REAL animal shelters only to be pocked by these fat cats! Time to make them loose some weight--after all being overweight and living off others kind intentions is not a healthy way to be!

I am sooo glad the members of Congress asked for them to be investigated!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Donate a MIN. of 50% of all contributions to shelters where it will help. I would take some of the millions they have stocked up and buy spay/neuter vans for the areas in the south that are still having problems with unwanted litters.

HSUS is not connected in any way with your local humane society. It is a thinly vialed animal rights organization with a vegan agenda. They are no more then a high polished version of PITA.

I simple check of the books shows far less then 1% of their multi million dollar budget goes to
pet shelters or pet rescue organizations.

The misleading adds they present are just to make money and push a vegan political agenda.

Remove the tax free not for profit status. This outfit is about politics and making money.

The H$U$ is a front for the Animal "Rights" movement, whose two goals are total criminalization of ALL human-animal contact, followed shortly thereafter by total elimination of ALL domestic animals through mass slaughter. They trick the public into believing they support animal welfare, when in fact, all of them; Wayne Pacelle in particular; hate domestic animals almost as much as their fellow traveller PETA hates women. Less than 1% of the millions of dollars they rake in each year goes to support any actual animal welfare projects. The rest is used to fund anti-agriculture lobbying, their lawyers, their executive pension fund, and terrorist groups like ALF and EarthFirst!.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Missouri, where they tried to pass legislation which would have effectively shut down all legitimate pet breeders, and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent domestic animals.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have them shut down and prosecuted for, among other things: tax evasion, fraud, extortion, blackmail, and hate crimes.

I find it sad that the H$U$ is so sadly not funding my local pet shelter. I know soo many people who think they are part of my local shelter. They only give 4/5 of 1% of their $121 million dollar budget. If they truely cared they would pay themselves less and more to the shelters they say they support.

They are NOT the American Humane Society, but people do not recognize that and donate to them by mistake. Their financial records are a nightmare and they have been voted to be one of the worst as far as WHAT they use their money for and most of it goes into the pockets of the board members. This was reported by a very reliable money magazine. They use their money to harass those that are trying to eliminate catastrophic diseases. They do NOT use their money for no-kill shelters or free neutering shelters, in fact most of their money after they take very large salaries goes to lobbying.
Absolutely, not a good use of donated money.

Really, use their money for neuter and spay shelters and no-kill shelters and lower their salaries to show that they really care for animals.

The Humane Society does not just focus on companion animals... It works to protect ALL animals, including farm animals and wild animals. This has made it enemies, who spread conspiracy rumors to try and prevent people from donating to this charity. The Center for Consumer Freedom is a front organization for many animal-abusing industries and loves to attack the HSUS to protect the greed of its constituents. The HSUS does not want to prevent people from owning pets, in fact it spends money actively promoting pet adoption (see, for example, their Shelter Pet Project). The HSUS works to pass legislation (like Prop B in Missouri) to help millions of companion animals... and it works tirelessly to end dog fighting and to put a stop to puppy mills. While also fighting abuse on factory farms. I commend the HSUS for focusing on all animals and confronting animal cruelty in all it's forms. I volunteer at a local animal shelter and also donate monthly to HSUS. The HSUS passes animal protection legislation and carries out large scale rescues that my shelter doesn't have the resources for... I'm glad that there is an organization out there that gets such large-scale results. I see their work as complementing the work of local shelters.
