We have the power to build a new consensus, which rejects killing as a method for achieving results. And we can look forward to a time when the wholesale slaughter of animals in shelters is viewed as a cruel aberration of the past. We have a choice. We can fully, completely, and without reservation embrace No Kill as our future. Or we can continue to legitimize the two-pronged strategy of failure: adopt a few and kill the rest. It is a choice which history has thrown upon us. We are the generation that questioned the killing. We are the generation that has discovered how to stop it. Will we be the generation that does?

"Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. We can be that great generation."

The HSUS is simply the largest and most effective animal welfare organization in the US. The HSUS knows how to effectively get legislation passed that helps all animals. Their focus is just not companion animals, though their leadership in getting anti puppy mill legislation on ballots, disaster relief and their spay/neuter campaign helps animals and shelters. The HSUS leads campaigns to stop abuse in many areas. Seal hunts, fur farms, canned hunts, factory farms and anti-horse slaughter are just a few of the areas in which the HSUS is raising awareness and fighthing for the animals.

I am a volunteer. HSUS is the largest, most effective, animal welfare organization in the world. Through their legislative efforts, shelter assistance programs, veterinary services and their many campaigns, HSUS has positively touched the lives of animals all over the world.

I have been a proud member of the HSUS since 1974 - almost 40 years. During that time, I have had the priviledge of knowing several staff members personally and many others through phone and e-mail contacts as I am also an active volunteer in local humane work and have had reasons to contact the HSUS for information or advice from time to time. There is no more transparent organization than the HSUS. They display what they do on their website and in their frequently published magazine. If the HSUS says they did this or did that in connection with a large rescue effort, you will find newspaper and TV accounts that back up their claims. No other humane organization is attacked by animal abusers as widely as is the HSUS. And that is simply because the HSUS is exposing the cruelties that are suffered by animals, cruelties that are carefully hidden from the public - puppy mills, horse soring, and abuses within factory farms, to name a few. Those who profit from those enterprises involving cruelty to animals don't want the HSUS interfering in their business. They especially don't want the HSUS lobbying for better federal and state laws. Since it was only founded in 1954, the history of the HSUS and its purpose is well documented. By the way - the money donated for the Katrina rescue was all spent in the region, some of it being spent after the fact of the actual rescue, spent helping the companion animals in that region.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not make changes.

I became acquainted with the HSUS in 1974, when one of their field agents helped bring about needed changes in the local municipal animal shelter where I live. At that time, the HSUS was much smaller than it was today. In attending some of their educational seminars for volunteers and shelter workers in the 1970's, I became more acquainted with their work and was amazed at how much they got done with no larger employee base than they had at that time. I watched very carefully as the HSUS grew in size and function over the years. I have not been disappointed. During the time between 1974 and the present, I have stayed involved in local and state issues and projects relating to animals, and have benefitted from the opportunities to learn more about humane issues from the HSUS by attending seminars, conferences, and the HSUS EXPO events as well as simply calling them up on the phone and discussing my concerns. I believe that my relationship with various agents of the HSUS is the only thing that has kept me active in the humane movement. As I obviously watch the HSUS very closely, I could sit here for a very long time cataloging the things they do to help animals in a meaningful way. Best I just say for those who want to know more about the organization, just go to their website, read their press releases and click on the button that says "News." I am particularly interested in their rescue efforts - rescuing animals in natural disasters and assisting law enforcement agencies in investigating dog fights, puppy mills and hoarder cases. I also like reading about their involvement in these cases in the general media - that is on TV station and newspaper websites. You will find, as I have, that the news media backs up the HSUS website reports of their involvement in these cases.

The Humane Society is the preeminent animal welfare organization in the world.

It is the primary target of the most wealthy anti-animal welfare organizations and ag groups. That in itself should tell you how well they do what they do.

I am a proud member and advocate for HSUS. I
am very thankful to have them fighting for the animals. They do so many good things for all animals, and I look forward to helping them in the future.

I am grateful for organizations such as the Humane Society. They are constantly addressing issues of interest to me. I am glad to say that this year I chose to donate to HSUS and I feel my money is well spent given they address a multitude of issues and very well at that. I highly recommend them and look forward to continuing my support for them next year and beyond.

First, people need to be aware that the HSUS is a LOBBYIST GROUP... They are strictly for Animal RIGHTS (Big difference than Animal Welfare). They donate less than 1% of their donations to the actual Humane Societies and other Shelters which is unacceptable considering their tear jerker commercials of dogs needing help. Also, it is very well documented that they do NOT support "Pit Bulls"... Any dog fighting raids they are a part of, they very vocally and to the Judge state clearly they want ALL the dogs destroyed including the new born puppies!! HSUS have proven to be no friend of the Pit Bulls by calling for their destruction! They called for ALL of Mike Vick's dogs to be killed! Fortunately for those Dogs, other Organizations stepped up to save the dogs! HSUS wants an end to all pet ownership. DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETIES and Rescues and other Local Organizations! They are NOT affiliated with the HSUS!!

I was very disappointed to find that money we donated for Katrina victims was largely "banked" by HSUS. They spent a very small portion of donations in LA and kept the lion's share for themselves. I now know that this is the way they operate, using a "bait & switch" method of fund raising , using tragedies to obtain money for bloated pensions, political donations and lobbying.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Ask for in IRS investigation into their tax exempt status due to large amounts of political donations and lobbying.

The Humane Society makes the majority of their profits by advertising dogs and cats in desperate and terrible situations. Much of their money goes towards lobbying, salaries and putting agricultural families out of business! Instead of working with farmers and ranchers, they sneak around and try to make themselves look good. I am especially disappointed that though they advertise the way they do, they only provide 1% of what they make to local shelters, who REALLY could use the money. They are so dishonest! Money would be better spent donating to your local animal shelter.

I have just read a lot of negative comments about Wayne Pacelle and The Humane Society of US. Only 1% of donations goes to shelters. Pacelle doesn't like animals. He was/is a supporter of Michael Vick. True or false?

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If above is true...fire Pacelle.

I became familiar with the HSUS when I was 13. I was so upset about the Canadian Seal Hunt, and I wanted to do something about it, and here was a group that was doing something! The greatest thing about HSUS is even if you are a teenager or college student with no income, the HSUS still provides ways to help rather than just donating! You are actually doing work and making a difference. I have met many state directors and Wayne Pacelle and they are incredibly passionate and dedicated to their work and they are making a real change for animals in the United States.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my everyday life. The experience I gained with the HSUS has given me the confidence to fight for animals in my every day life and to make a positive change.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Try to somehow distinguish the HSUS from all the local Humane Societies and shelters to prevent confusion as to where money is being donated.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

My volunteer experience was amazing, they shouldn't change a thing!

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Because of my volunteer experience, I now have contacts all throughout the United States to help me pursue my career in animal welfare. I also have started my own student animal rights organization, which has improved my leadership, organization, and event planning skills. Through the HSUS, I have also gotten involved in several local animal groups, which has introduced me to many amazing animal lovers in Colorado.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

VERY HAPPY and like I was doing something significant with my life.
