Mission:

FOUNDED IN 1987, OUR NON PROFIT; FLORIDA RESEARCH INSTITUTE for EQUINE NURTURING, DEVELOPMENT and SAFETY OR F.R.I.E.N.D.S.;GREW OUT OF A NEED TO ESTABLISH A SAFE HAVEN FOR A LARGE GROUP OF HORSES IN SOUTH FLORIDA THAT WERE FOUND TO BE CARRIERS OF EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA OR EIA. WITHOUT THIS SAFE HAVEN,THOSE HORSES AND THE ONES WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE HOMES FOR TODAY, WOULD HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY HEALTHY.  WE ALSO PROVIDE CERTAIN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP IN THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF A VACCINE OR CURE. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE INFORMATION ON A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL REGARDING EIA AND ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC FURTHER REGARDING THIS CONDITION. DUE TO CURRENT LAWS,HORSES TESTING POSITIVE FOR EIA, MUST BE QUARANTINED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC GUIDELINES OR EUTHANIZED. WE PROVIDE COMPLIANCE WITH THE QUARANTINE GUIDELINES THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED TO EUTHANIZE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A HEALTHY HORSE WITH THE ABILITY TO LIVE OUT THEIR NORMAL LIFE SPAN. SPONSORSHIP OF THESE HORSES BY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS BOTH THE HORSE AND THE MANY PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE OF CARING FOR AND INTERACTING WITH A HORSE WHILE FEEDING, RIDING,GROOMING,ETC. OUR GOAL IS TO SAVE THESE HORSES FROM BEING “PUT DOWN” BY PROVIDING FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE COMMUNITY WITH THE CHANCE TO “OWN” A HORSE THROUGH SPONSORSHIP. WE ALSO HAVE A VERY ACTIVE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM THAT BENEFITS THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.

Results:

We have given sanctuary to many horses since 1987 and continue to do so allowing many people the chance to participate in something worthwhile in the community.

ALL HORSE AND ANIMAL LOVERS IN BROWARD COUNTY. Anyone interested in volunteer hours or anyone that would like to help save these horses. community groups welcome

Geographic areas served:

Florida and in particular all of Broward county

Programs:

I have been a loyal supporter of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. even before it's non-profit status. This is an amazing organization that not only rescues abandoned, abused, orphaned, and older horses that would be put down, but ultimately provides plenty of love and affection for these magnificent animals! It is a forever place for them to live the rest of their lives in happiness with the caring efforts of the many volunteers that have come through the gates throughout the years.

This organization also provides the opportunity for families to participate in good family recreation by allowing them to sponsor one of the horses or simply in participating in the feeding, cleaning, and care for the horses, as well as pot belly pigs, goats, donkeys, and miniature horses.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides local community events and services, as well as informative seminars. The emotional rewards in caring and working with the horses are paid in many WHINNIES!!!!!

This outstanding organization not only provides a haven for abused, orhpanded, and abandoned horses, but also for horses that can no longer be taken care of by their owners due to the economy, foreclosures, etc. This organization also works with the community and other organizations providing experiences of working with the horses. School students earning community service hours learn about responsibilites and caring for the animals. Other individuals serving community service hours continue to come back to help as volunteers on a regular basis. This organization exists only through donations, grants, and various fundraisers. Please vote for us!!!!!! F.R.I.E.N.D.S. thanks you.

If you are looking for an organization to do volunteer work with, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. can be a rewarding experience for any age group. It is not a riding stable or exclusive equine club...simply a safe haven for horses who would have no other place to go, possibly facing euthanization. There are many loyal, caring, long time volunteers, come rain or shine. Students can earn there community service hours. Many come back on a regular basis after they have finished! Volunteers will perform many duties such as grooming, cleaning stalls, cleaning and filling water buckets, sprucing up stall areas, etc. If you're looking for a place to get exercise and bond with animals, give F.R.I.E.N.D.S. a try?

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Knowing that by being a part of this organization, it not only helps care for rescued horses, but gives the community a chance to experience the beauty of bonding with the animals and spending quality time together as a family.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

We get to meet many interesting people and kids from all walks of life and can share the rewarding experience of enjoying being around these wonderful animals.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Staff members are very knowledgable and helpful and share their time with the many volunteers that have never been around horses before.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Make sure that any horse that needs a home will not be turned away, and F.R.I.E.N.D.S. could continue to educate members of the community on the care of these wonderful animals.

FRIENDS is an amazing organization. Not only is it a phenomenal rescue providing the horses with the best way to live out the remainder of their lives in peace as a happy herd, it also is an amazing place for volunteers of all kinds to come and get away from life for a while and spend time with these amazing horses. Every animal at FRIENDS has a story, and by spending time and getting to know them can really make a difference in a persons life. I have been involved with FRIENDS for over four years and have seen people from no experience with horses all the way to the most experienced be touched by these beautiful rescue animals. Volunteers of all kinds are welcome and there is no job too big or too small. The horses and other animals truly appreciate the work that people do out there. This can easily be seen from how the spirits of these animals change from the first days they arrive to after when they get the love and attention they deserve. The process is a truly beautiful thing to be apart of. I urge everyone to experience making a difference in these animals lives, it is simply good for your soul. There is a lot of beautiful history at the ranch. Everyone involved is there for the animals and there is something for everyone. Come visit FRIENDS!

I joined FRIENDS in 1986 before it was a nonprofit. This orgainzation has grown so much over the years and has evolved into one of the most useful, caring and compassionate horse welfare organizations in Florida. The work that is done by the women and men at our ranch is beyond what most people give of themselves and it is for that reason, that FRIENDS is so successful.

If you are interested in horses and having fun, come and visit us...we are always looking for new people.

I have been involved with FRIENDS since its inception in 1987 and have held many positions; i.e. orphan feeder, ranch manager, president, donor and now board of directors. This is a very worthly organization and the members are awesome. They take their precious time to benefit the horses and receive no pay ...everything is volunteer work. The members strive to give this special band of horses a safe and healthy life. The adults put together events for the younger riders and the kids have a great time in participating and getting their horses ready. This is a great place for junior members to learn horsemanship and these children learn very quickly about the responsibility of caring for a horse.

Over the past 25 years there have been a few grievances..mostly unfounded from people who were asked to leave the ranch because their behavior was not befitting to the organization. We strive to work out any problems and for the most part our members are top notch people. Our feedback is that FRIENDS is greatly respected and has a good reputation in the community. We strive to "always do the right thing".

The care of these horses is very expensive and we are grateful for any donations that come our way. Please open your hearts and come and join us...the right caliber of people stay with for many years!!!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give the ranch more money!

I have been associated with FRIENDS since 1985 and it is one of the best organizations in Florida. Not only do they take in and care for horses with EIA, but they also help out other smaller animals that happen to come their way. The hearts of the members of FRIENDS are in the right place..they work tirelessly to make life better for this band of horses, without pay, without thanks, without expecting anything back, except a healthy horse.

If you are looking for a wonderful place to donate your time, money and skills, go to FRIENDS.!!!! They are the very best Broward County has to offer.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Built them a real barn.

I joined FRIENDS in 1986, before it was FRIENDS, and have watched a small group of people evolve into a dedicated and determined larger group of people. The focus has never changed but conditions for this band of horses has improved vastly over the years. Awareness of their plight has also been expanded. This is one of the most worthwhile organizations in Florida...they will help any farm animal in need, although their focus is horses. They work tirelessly in an emergency and can put together a fund raising event in a flash. Hats off to everyone at FRIENDS, for you are the people who makes living possible for these horses.

FRIENDS is a lot of things to a lot of different people. There are so many ways to participate in the program and you get to choose what you want to do. While being around and interacting with horses is good for your heart and soul, they are also fun to children of all ages. Your experience can be life changing out there. You can learn things you never thought you would know and gain relationships that you never imagined would matter so much. Volunteering out there is the best way to start. It gives you the opportunity to see what takes place, how things are done, all while helping to care for these beautiful animals. You will know within 2 or 3 visits if this is the place for you. If you don't mind dirt and occasionally mud, you will probably love it. It is a peaceful, family oriented place that put the animals first while teaching those who want to learn everything about horses.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I had the money to give them, I would buy every horse out there new stalls panels. They are also really in need of some funding to buy the supplies to repair and build a new fence line.

FRIENDS is an AWSOME organization. We currently house 55 horses, 2 miniature donkeys, 9 pot bellied pigs, 1 farm pig, 3 goats and 1 cat. It takes a lot of people to make it all work. We have no paid employees. We have GREAT Volunteers, GREAT Animals and A LOT OF FUN! We need volunteer support to help feed the horses, clean stalls, water, bathe, groom and medicate when needed. Everyone is welcome and we will gladly teach you about horses and their care if you want to learn. We also have the ever popular "Sponsor A Horse Program" where for a flat rate fee, you can choose to have a horse all to yourself to ride, groom and play with for the month. We also have the 1/2 a horses share plan too if you only want to have half the month with a horse. We are always in need of funding for the vet and feed store. It runs $ 13,000.00 per month just for feed and hay and there's always a vet bill with this many horses. Currently we are in the process of accepting 9 more horses who are in immediate need of assistance. We have taken 4 new horses in this week and we will go get 2 more this week. We need commuinty support for not only financial donations but for volunteer support as well! FRIENDS has been saving Florida's horses for more than 25 years and with your help, we would like to go another 25. We hope to see you out there!

In the last 2 years I have watched the volunteer program grow in leaps and bounds. In January and February of 2010 they had over 500 NEW VOLUNTEERS. The new MERIT PROGRAM is a GREAT incentive for all kids. The sense of accomplishment the kids feel as they achieve and meet each level is amazing to see. FRIENDS continues to grow in leaps and bounds always evolving while including these special horses. It started out as a simple horse rescue and has grown into a totally interactive program that includes all ages of the community. If you haven't been there, you need to go. It is one of Broward County's biggest assets and hidden secrets. I don't know of anywhere else you can go with your family and interact with farm animals for FREE. There are so many things they need help with and there is truly something out there that everyone can do to help. If you don't know how, they'll teach you. You can groom horses, help clean stalls, clean and fill water buckets, help feed and if your good with a hammer, help with maintenance. Even if you just want to go out and see the animals they welcome you. They have horses, pigs, goats, miniature donkeys and cats. The place is very welcoming and fun.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

so many ways. Every time you see the horses you know why you are there. They are amzing to watch in the pasture. What satisfaction you feel each time you can save a horse from euthanasia or slaughter.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

approach the Board of Directors with my ideas. They are very open to criticism. They even have a survey for EVERY volunteer to fill out before they leave so they can keep their finger on the pulse of the daily operations.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the private interations with the horses and other animals.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

well versed, very knowledgable, dedicated to the cause and pleasant.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

AWESOME. Maybe they could afford to buy a piece of property that could be their permanent Forever Home.

Ways to make it better...

it weren't so hot and rainy in the summer months. But, you can't control the weather.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding in this downward spiraling economy. They are rich in volunteer support but as you know, horses cost a lot to feed and care for. Donations are hard to get right now.

One thing I'd also say is that...

FRIENDS has been in existance since the early 1970's.They have withheld the test of time and their program is proven to work. They have been and continue to be the biggest horse rescue in Broward County and this is for more than 40 years.

The organization has gone a long way to help not only horses diagnosed with EIA in the state of Florida but it provides a sanctuary for all other horses in need in Broward County. The rescue facility has been in existence since 1987 providing a place for horses to live out their natural lives with love, care and dignity. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. as it is also known, has a Sponsor-A-Horse program whereby families and individuals can sponsor a horse and have the horse to call their own at the ranch to care for, love, and ride for as long as they care to sponsor. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Rescue is deeply involved in the community and has several programs for children interaction, as well as a very active volunteer program.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how so many horses that would have been needlessly euthanized have been saved and the joy this has brought to the families and children in the community when they come to the ranch and enjoy these beautiful animals in a family friendly setting.
