Mission: FOUNDED IN 1987, OUR NON PROFIT; FLORIDA RESEARCH INSTITUTE for EQUINE NURTURING, DEVELOPMENT and SAFETY OR F.R.I.E.N.D.S.;GREW OUT OF A NEED TO ESTABLISH A SAFE HAVEN FOR A LARGE GROUP OF HORSES IN SOUTH FLORIDA THAT WERE FOUND TO BE CARRIERS OF EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA OR EIA. WITHOUT THIS SAFE HAVEN,THOSE HORSES AND THE ONES WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE HOMES FOR TODAY, WOULD HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY HEALTHY.  WE ALSO PROVIDE CERTAIN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP IN THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF A VACCINE OR CURE. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE INFORMATION ON A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL REGARDING EIA AND ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC FURTHER REGARDING THIS CONDITION. DUE TO CURRENT LAWS,HORSES TESTING POSITIVE FOR EIA, MUST BE QUARANTINED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC GUIDELINES OR EUTHANIZED. WE PROVIDE COMPLIANCE WITH THE QUARANTINE GUIDELINES THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED TO EUTHANIZE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A HEALTHY HORSE WITH THE ABILITY TO LIVE OUT THEIR NORMAL LIFE SPAN. SPONSORSHIP OF THESE HORSES BY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS BOTH THE HORSE AND THE MANY PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE OF CARING FOR AND INTERACTING WITH A HORSE WHILE FEEDING, RIDING,GROOMING,ETC. OUR GOAL IS TO SAVE THESE HORSES FROM BEING “PUT DOWN” BY PROVIDING FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE COMMUNITY WITH THE CHANCE TO “OWN” A HORSE THROUGH SPONSORSHIP. WE ALSO HAVE A VERY ACTIVE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM THAT BENEFITS THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Results: We have given sanctuary to many horses since 1987 and continue to do so allowing many people the chance to participate in something worthwhile in the community.
Target demographics: ALL HORSE AND ANIMAL LOVERS IN BROWARD COUNTY. Anyone interested in volunteer hours or anyone that would like to help save these horses. community groups welcome
Geographic areas served: Florida and in particular all of Broward county
Programs: SPONSOR-A-HORSE PROGRAM This program matches a sponsor with a horse that they can ride , groom, love and care for as their own on our 60 acre property. We also have a very active community volunteer program!

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is an awesome place for the horses. The horses get to be horses and are not used for hard riding. They receive better care than most barns. The place is great for people who love horses and for people who can not afford one. They can either volunteer and spend their time with the horses and other animals or sponsor one of their own. The place has a warm atmosphere and it makes your time out there memorable and you feel you've accomplished something every time you go. If you love horses you should go and check out the place. I can guarantee there is no other place like it in Broward County. The people out there love the animals and they always put them first.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is a great place for anyone who likes being outside, hard work and horses. The members and volunteers work tirelessly every day to ensure the horses are healthy and well cared for. The people always put the horses needs before their own needs or wants. Their cause is admirable and the people are extremely caring and generous. It truly is one of the best rescues I have ever seen. In fact, most barns I see are not as kept up as F.R.I.E.N.D.S. nor do their horses look as good.

An awesome place for people who want to "test the waters" with their families getting involved with horses without spending a small fortune to "try it out". They offer an affordable program that can accomidate both people who want a horse they don't have to share with anyone and also a program sharing a horse for those who can't be there every day. They have a unique set up where all the feeding, stall cleaning and "work" can be done by volunteers or if you want the complete "hands on experience" you can do it yourself. The price can not be beat by any barn locally. There is no "term lease" involved. The staff is helpful and so are the members as they all share the same attitude. "Everyone was a beginner at some point". If you have an interest in horses, you are welcome to just volunteer as well.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I get enourmous satisfaction watching the horses they rescue blossom as they gain back the weight and the strength they lost at the hands of someone else.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Try to find them a professional fundraiser to help them raise the funds they so desperately need.

I went to this rescue with my daughter and encountered a gentleman that was very rude to me and my daughter. I was raised around horses and had an individual there ask me a question about a problem that a horse that she was sponsoring was having. When I tried to help her with her problem, me and my daughter was asked to leave the property. The people that was there and witnessed the aggression that this gentleman showed seemed to be shocked as I was. All I did was try to help this woman with her problem as I have extensive experience with horse ailments and you would think that they would welcome any help that they could get from someone if they are really about the animals as I am. Seems to me that it is more about the money at this so called rescue.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have a more friendly staff. Really it was only one staff member but I believe he is a senior staff member. I would also welcome any help and knowledge that was offered me and I definitely would not become aggressive towards anyone in front of a child. As an adult you should know that.

I have to say, I am very surprised by your review. I was wondering why you waited a year to write a review, and then you put one on here, instead of contacting us directly when it happened so we could address the issue back then? I would like you to know that we can happily say that we have replaced staff since last year and I am very sorry you had that experience. It is very rare we get such complaints and comments. Usually, comments like this come from children/teens playing pranks or people trying to damage an organization. I noticed you wrote that you are a professional and you have expertise in this field. Are you a professional volunteer, volunteer supervisor or do you operate an equine facility? I'm not sure what the difference between a staff member and a senior staff member would be especially since we have no paid employees. Nor do I see how in the world you get the organization is "about money" from the issue you are complaining about. Since you mentioned that you have some horse experience you probably know that every barn does things differently. I would like you to understand that we have a very experienced staff and had there been a health issue it would have been attended to immediately or the vet would have been called. That being said, I feel pretty comfortable saying there had to be more to the story than what you are saying. I am also sure you can understand that if a volunteer comes in for the first time and they started telling people what to do, or what they thought, we might get a bit concerned. We do not know you nor do we know your experience. Perhaps, if you are ever in that situation again you should go directly to the person in charge and let them know your concerns. F.R.I.E.N.D.S currently has 52 Equine, 11 pigs, 4 goats and 2 cats. It is safe to say, WE ARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS and we have been since 1987. I would happily talk to you about your visit if you would like to call me. (954)492-0168

This is a place like none other. The research done here in the equine field and the rescue efforts done here are providing a safe haven for horses and animals that would have to be euthanized if not for the owners and volunteers that put in their valuable time all for the love of these animals.

We visited this rescue 2 years ago while we were on vacation. They were wonderful. Welcomed us with open arms and we dug right in and helped! IT was raining that day and we helped with clean up and just had a great time. This rescue goes above and beyond for these horses that no one else wants!!! We have become great friends with the owner of the rescue and cannot wait to go back this summer to see them again!!! She has a heart of gold!!!

Amazing horse ranch for any out door or animal lover. After arriving at the ranch from unthinkable conditions, these horses are respected and allowed to live a stress free life. They deserve at least that. Families and individuals can sponsor a horse which is just like owing your own horse with out the huge expense. Run by an all volunteer staff, the ranch is always in need of volunteers willing to work hard while enjoying what they do. Visit the wesite: www.eiahorses.org for all information needed for volunteering and sponsoring.

FRIENDS is one of the only true horse rescues I have seen. Horses have been rehabilitaated from abuse and extreame neglect. They take horses that anywhere else would be put down, due to medical conditions, age or prior owner's inability to make money using the horse. All of the horses at this ranch are worthy of a happy "horse" life and did not deserve their prior treatment. If you are reading this please make an effort to donate to help continue to save the horses.

A wonderful place for any animal lover to volunteer. A great way to own a horse with out the major expense. Anyone with desire can volunteer or sponsor a horse, no experience necessary. This is a wonderful organization saving some beautiful, soulful animals in need.
