Issues: Education

Location: 6600 Busch Blvd Suite 201 Columbus OH 43229 USA

Mission: The Mission of TECH CORPS’ is three-fold and is achieved through: - PROGRAMS: Bringing additional technology resources to K-12 students and teachers through national, state and local programs such as Camp IT, Student TECH CORPS, Student WEB CORPS, Techie Camp, and Techie Club. - PEOPLE: Recruiting and supporting tech-savvy volunteers from the community to advise and assist schools and youth-serving nonprofit organizations in the integration of new technologies. - PARTNERS: Increasing educational technology resources through partnerships with education, business, government and community.
Results: TECH CORPS was founded in 1995 by Gary Beach, Publisher Emeritus of CIO Magazine. Gary envisioned an organization which would challenge American volunteers to help K-12 schools build a technology infrastructure -- much like the Peace Corps challenges men and women to help developing countries build their infrastructures. Building from a state pilot in Massachusetts, TECH CORPS developed technology programs and deployed tech-savvy volunteers to assist K-12 schools and youth-serving organizations across the country. Over the years, partners such as Cisco, HP, Intel, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, NCTA and Time Warner Cable have provided TECH CORPS with the fuel to deliver much-needed technology resources to K-12 students and teachers. Since 1995, more than 10,000 TECH CORPS volunteers have shared their time and talents assisting schools and nonprofit organizations in their communities.
Target demographics: K-12 students
Direct beneficiaries per year: nearly 900 students
Geographic areas served: United States
Programs: Techie Club, Techie Camp, Student TECH CORPS and Student WEB CORPS

I am so glad I was given the opportunity to get involved with TECH CORPS this past summer. This past summer I was a site coordinator for one of the sites for the Student Web Corps Program and I’m currently an instructor for Techie Club. What I really enjoy about this program is their passion to give students and kids the opportunity to learn about the technology industry in a fun and hands on way! The best part about volunteering is seeing the students initially having little to no knowledge about technology and then seeing them by the end of the program wanting to learn more and even some wanting to pursue a career out of it! TECH CORPS is Fantastic!

This is my second year volunteering with Tech Core as a Site Coordinator for a Techie Club. The support we have received from Tech Corps is amazing! The Regional Director we work with, Carla Thompson, is always enthusiastic and quick respond to my many questions. The children in the club have benefitted from it so much - it is such a great opportunity for them to learn more about technology. The training and support the volunteers received is thorough. We are excited to be starting another year!

I have been a Techie Club volunteer for the past 2 years and it has been a wonderful experience. The Techie Club program brings hands-on experience to elementary school children. I've worked with 4th - 6th graders who would otherwise not have the opportunity to touch all these different areas of technology. We had them removing and reinstalling computer components, building working robot, creating their own movies and games and much more. I've met some wonderful people in Tech Corps who are excited and passionate about their work in this STEM effort. As an IT professional, this is needed, keep up the good work, you are making a difference!!

I work for a Cleveland-area software company, and I'm a volunteer in Tech Corps' Techie Club program. Tech Corps does an amazing job of supporting us and our efforts to teach and excite students about Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM) subjects through an after school enrichment program. They provide training, example lesson plans & curriculum, an online website and social community, and staff support that makes the volunteer experience easy and rewarding and that helps the kids and the school get the most out of the program. This is my second year with the program, and I'm still amazed at the passion & dedication of the Tech Corps staff and their willingness to receive feedback and improve the program. I would highly recommend this non-profit to any potential volunteer, parent, student, or teacher.

Tech Corps is a great organization! In my 3+ years working with Tech Corps, I've interacted with many of their programs - Techie Clubs at multiple schools, many one-day seminars, their NSBE Junior chapter and Techie Camp.
As a volunteer, I find Tech Corps to be very organized but also not overbearing. The very lean staff team in Central Ohio (i.e. Carla!) is highly responsive and provides resources when needed - but gets out of the way and lets you do your thing the rest of the time.
Carla is constantly working on new ideas. It has been phenomenal to watch the organization grow in its reach across Central Ohio in the past several years. When I began working with Tech Corps, there were only a handful of Techie Clubs and camps, and now the numbers of both are mind-boggling, and programs like Student Web Corps are reaching even more students each year.
When I started volunteering with Tech Corps, I was totally uncertain, having just come across the organization accidentally on the internet. However, in the past few years I've absolutely fallen in love with their mission and methods, and I can't imagine my life without the time I spend working with Tech Corps!

I've had the opportunity to know the folks at Tech Corps for over 10 years now, but had never taken the step to participate in the summer programs. This year, with a little juggling, I was able to give of my time and experience to these youth. What I didn't expect was what "they" would give me in return. The first "word" that comes to mind is the unknown. I had never taught before, had never stood before a group of young people and instructed on any specific subject, outside of my own children I had never had someone look to me as the "nurturing authoritative" on anything. But there was, given the opportunity to work with eager minds, teach them something new, introduce them to something "they" were interested in help others who might not be, become "aware" of something that may be interesting.

Eight weeks later, I stood before that same class, and they were still interested, and I was interested in "them". I remembered taking an interest in things as a youth and having someone introduce me to something else interesting about the same subject. There are couple of students who still keep in contact with me and they inquire about things they don't understand and wish to learn more. I provide them with answer and at times encourage a different approach to their questions. Because of this I am more fulfilled than many of the accomplishments I have had in my professional field have given me.

Tech Corps's programs have a place. They provide a service and a need. Through their complex network of professionals with varying skill sets they are able to engage with young people from our current culture and keep them "interested" in the things that matter today and will matter tomorrow. More importantly, they help those same professionals "remember" what it's like to become interested in something.

Upon moving to Columbus six years ago, I became active in the Tech Corps NSBE Jr. Chapter. It was wonderful to see high school students that were genuinely interested in STEM degrees. I really enjoy working with, mentoring, and watching the students develop in young adults. Tech Corps has provided a great service by providing students a chance to learn STEM from caring and knowledgeable people that are in the industry. I look forward to being involved with Tech Corps in their future endeavors.

I was honored to be a board member of Tech Corps for many years. I was always so impress with the work of Tech Corps and the outcomes they achieved with the students they served. It is so exciting to see students building video games instead of just playing video games or to watch them share the robot they built. We need problem solvers in the workforce of tomorrow and the activities presented by Tech Corps will certainly help children obtain those skills.

I've taught for TechCorps' Summer TECHieCamps twice now. Both times, I saw a huge difference in the kids between Monday and Friday. Tech Corps gets kids excited about Technology fields and shows them that they really can do it too. Currently a senior in college, I only wish that I had been exposed to such a program when I was younger. There's nothing better you can do for a kid that gives them a bigger head start in problem-solving and math than letting them create with code. TechCorps has definitely cracked the nut on getting kids to love STEM.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Provide even more Camps and after-school programs to grow their outreach and impact. If the funds were available, I'd upgrade some of the laptops the kids are using.
