TEACHING & LEARNING COLLABORATIVE

Rating: 5 stars   32 reviews

Issues:

Location: 200 E. Wilson Bridge Rd. Worthington OH 43085 USA

Mission: To provide innovative, high-quality professional development and support for preK-12 educators in mathematics, science, and technology.
Results: TLC coordinates several professional development programs in mathematics and science. For the past six years, TLC has coordinated the statewide K-3 IMPACT program. IMPACT helps teachers develop instructional methods which provide all of their students with skills that will lead to future successes in STEM careers. K-3 IMPACT instruction is student-centered and develops the critical foundations in number sense, measurement and problem-solving. Many of the participating teachers are working in schools that serve a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Skills developed in this program lead to better intervention with these students so they have a solid mathematical understanding in the early grades. The intention of K-3 IMPACT is to lead to student success which is a shared goal of programs such as Closing the Achievement Gap. K-3 IMPACT was developed by a statewide group of mathematics leaders. It is managed by the Teaching & Learning Collaborative in partnership with Educational Service Centers and universities. To date, almost 400 different schools have participated in the first four years of IMPACT, represented by approximately 1,500 teachers. Eevaluation results have consistently demonstrated K-3 IMPACT's value as a strong well-received professional development experience for K-3 teachers. Results have shown that K-3 IMPACT participants have made statistically significant gains in mathematics content knowledge and improved instructional techniques.
Target demographics: Educators in grades PreK-12
Direct beneficiaries per year: Hundreds of teachers attend TLC programs each year. This summer alone, TLC worked with over 350 teachers who will work with almost 10,000 students.
Geographic areas served: Ohio
Programs: K-3 IMPACT (Improving Mathematical Practices and Classroom Teaching), K-2 COUNTS! (Creating Opportunities to Understand Numbers Together with Students), FACTS (Facilitating Active Classroom Teaching Strategies) in Math, Number Talks, Science Works!, INQUIRE, COMET (Central Ohio Mathematics Enrichment for Teachers), OMAP (Ohio Mathematics Academy Program), OSCI (Ohio Science Institute)

The Teaching Learning Center helps in their work to provide districts, schools, and teachers with opportunity, information, and skills by providing support, and professional development for teachers throughout Ohio.

I have personally been involved with the Teaching Learning Center for the past four years. I have found the staff very well trained, personable, and willing to provide support for teacher in math and science. They have provided on site professional development for our math teachers (K-5). They are very well prepared, and very well received by our teachers. We appreciate their support and find them to be a valuable asset to our district.

Science Works (organized by TLC) was one of the most rewarding PDs I have taken in my entire career. It was hands-on, real teacher work that you could take right back to the classroom. I rave about this opportunity to everyone I meet (especially since good science related PD is hard to find), and have had many sign up to come back and confirm how fabulous it was!

We have given the early childhood workshop for the past several summers in Texarkana, Texas. The teachers love the materials and enjoy using them in their classrooms.

I have worked with TLC since 2005. I have helped them with mathematics education by serving on advisory boards and rewrite committees. If you are looking for the most current information on mathematics and science education, this is the place to get your training! They use the most current research to create workshops. The focus is always on building teacher's content knowledge. Absolutely the best group to get your latest and greatest on Ohio's New Learning Standards!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

hire more people to do more workshops asap! :) More money is needed by this organization in order to make this happen. Please, donors, donate!

I was part of a science summer program, INQUIRE, offered through the Teaching and Learning Collaborative a couple of summers ago. This group has the most up-to-date teaching practices with more hands-on science ideas than a teacher could possibly use. The teachers walked away with field trip ideas for their school yard, knowledge about Ohio mussels and formative assessments with many writing connections. Kelli Shrewsberry, as director, is a full-fledged scientist that shares the love of teaching kids and teachers. A worthy nonprofit organization!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand their group so all teachers in the area could profit from their workshops.

TLC offers courses utilizing professors, current teachers and the most up-to-date research to develop lessons. Every topic covered was fun and full of lessons ready to carry into classrooms the next day for busy elementary teachers. I participated as a facilitator with 30+ years in the classroom. I spent much time learning new information and being so excited at the lesson possibilities. I would not hesitate to take one of their workshops or courses and know the activities they sell to be of top quality.

If you are looking for great professional development for teachers of elementary school-age children, TLC is the place to go. In mathematics, a good foundation is everything. TLC's PD sessions help teacher put the emphasis on the learning not the teaching. Their sessions show teachers how to get kids talking about mathematics and thinking about their own ways to solve problems.

The Teaching & Learning Collaborative is continuously providing relevant and life changing lessons in science and mathematics for teachers at all levels. They are always on the cutting edge of important issues in education and developing lessons necessary for teachers to be successful. A particular area they have focused on are the Core Standards being introduced across the country. Their professional development classes give teachers the knowledge and confidence to help their students be successful in meeting these standards.

This was my first of many classes that I will take through TLC. TLC gave me an indepth professional insight into math. Through the TLC professional development programs I am using more specific instruction which helps my students build themselves better number sense as well as problem solving skills.

my instruction in math.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to do what you are doing and build upon the program and make it bigger and better if that is possible.

I first became involved with TLC and their programming back in 2000. Their workshop offerings became an important component of my on-going professional development. TLC has helped me to stay current in the area of science. My use of formative assessments to help guide instruction and meet the needs of my students is due to classes offered by TLC. Their work with teachers focuses on on-going contact throughout the school year. This on-going contact enables teachers to meet, discuss challenges and develop solutions with their peers. Through their work with teachers, TLC is helping the students in Ohio gain knowledge and understanding in the areas of science and mathematics.

I've personally experienced the results of TLC through the science content understood by my fifth grade students. As a teacher, when I become more knowledgeable about my content areas, then my students will reap the benefits.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I wish that this organization could reach even more teachers in the state of Ohio.

The TLC is an amazing organization. They consistently offer high quality professional development that is relevant and very rigorous. Every time I leave a professional development they offer I have lots of activities/games/ideas to take straight back to my classroom and school. The classes are typically spread out over time or offer online extensions. This has allowed me to collaborate with teachers outside of my school district and share successes and challenges. That open sourcing of information has allowed me to challenge myself as an educator and raise the level of instruction that my students have access to. While I love the rigor of the classes that is not what keeps me coming back. In teaching it is easy to feel helpless and isolated. The TLC has opened doors of collaboration within my building and beyond. Learning about teaching math is fun and I am often motivated to seek out more information online and in journals after leaving a class. The TLC is definitely getting it right! They understand that to lead high quality professional development that they must foster relationships, provide rigorous content, and offer information in a relevant way that is easily applied to the classroom.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...personal and professional growth. Although I cannot directly attribute this to the TLC, our OAA math test scores have improved significantly since a group of teachers in my building began attending workshops led by the TLC.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Offer even more classes. I know there are limitations because it is a non-profit.

What, if any, change in your life has this group encouraged?

This group has encouraged me to challenge my students more, increase discourse in my classroom and open the lines of communication with my co-teachers and educators outside of my building.
