Issues: Education, Job Training, Human Services, Immigration

Location: 1314 South L St PO Box 5107 Tacoma WA 98405 USA

Mission: Mission: Tacoma Community House works with and advocates for individuals from various ethnic and cultural groups to improve the quality of their lives through education, employment and multilingual assistance. The agency began in 1910 as a settlement house for immigrants in Tacoma''s Hilltop neighborhood. Through the years, the programs offered at TCH have evolved to meet the changing needs of our community and program participants. Now, through a combination of employment, education and social service programs, Tacoma Community House is able to function as a one-stop center for adults who want to build successful lives for themselves and their families.
Programs: Tacoma Community House believes education, understanding and opportunity are formidable weapons against poverty, illiteracy, and the challenges faced by refugees and immigrants. Programs offered at TCH include Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language classes, immigration assistance and citizenship preparation classes, job training, placement, and retention services, and social service case management in 30+ languages. Specific employment programs include Families That Work, Community Jobs, and Work Experience Project. We also offer a Youth Employment Program and language bank that offers translation services in over 35 languages.

Our education programs are supplemented by a one-on-one tutor program, which matches volunteer tutors with students who need extra help, specific vocabulary assistance, or whose schedules do not allow time for classes. We also have two state-of-the-art computer labs both at TCH mainsite and Swan Creek Library that offer computer based learning programs and internet access.

I was trained as a volunteer tutor for illiterate adults. This organization teaches adults to read, helps with citizenship, helps them get GEDs and learn how to be employable. It is a second chance and what America is all about.
