STI is an excellent organization focusing on promoting sustainable travel worldwide. STI engages the public through seminars, workshops and school lectures. It introduces concepts like triple-bottom-line, social awareness and sustainability effectively by using real world examples and engaging conversations. STI is an one-of-a-kind organization that raises our awareness about the impacts of travel and provides easily accessible and effective tools to limit our negative impacts.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

STI is doing a great job. Amongst many important tasks, their educational resources that are available to travelers and travel providers are very valuable. They influence the industry in a positive way and steer it in the right direction. STI supports the use of carbon offsets, enabling travelers and travel providers to offset unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.

influencing the entire travel industry to move in the right direction.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

make a huge impact on the industry and help make the world better!

STI is one of the leaders in setting standards in sustainable tourism practices...both close to home and to the far corners of the earth. I know of very few other non-profit organizations that are able to achieve so much with so few resources and minimal overhead. The STI team and its dedicated volunteers are wildly passionate in advocating their vision for travel that respects the earth and all of its people, flora and fauna.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

being a leader in establishing an the sustainable travel eco-certification program (STEP).

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

greatly expand the traveler's philanthropy program as this is one of the main things STI can do to meaningfully differentiate itself and deliver on its core purpose.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

my interaction with the co-founders, Brian Mullis and Peter Krahenbuhl.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

deeply passionate, committed, focused to achieving STI's mission; they are also a great bunch of fun-to-be-around people.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

dramatically expend and extend the reach and visibility of its programs and services.

Ways to make it better...

the organization had not tried to do too many things all at once.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

how to generate sufficient revenue in order to bring on additional staff to accommodate its expected growth.

One thing I'd also say is that...

STI should stay out of the business of actually booking travel but instead be the premier evangelist and advocacy organization for environmentally and socially responsible sustainable tourism.

I had a great experience working as a volunteer intern with STI in the fall of 2009. I found their educational and outreach services to be one of a kind and was given the opportunity to work on a cutting edge conservation project examining the future of trading water rights as a potential tool for promoting ecotourism by helping travelers participate in environmental conservation and economic development projects in the places they visit.

change the way we think about ecotourism.

A wonderful non-profit! Sustainable Travel International challenged my travel business to go beyond our comfort zone and thoroughly explore what it means to be holistically sustainable. The staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their field.

The Great!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to employ more staff. STI takes on a lot of projects but doesn't always have enough time to thoroughly take them all on.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that it challenged my business to become as sustainable as we can be.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely friendly, worldly, helpful and knowledgeable about their field.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change the world even more than it already is!

Ways to make it better...

the program had been a bit more user friendly. (the STEP program has recently been adjusted to become more user friendly).

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

raising enough money to support their many projects.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Sustainable Travel International will definitely see a lot of success in the coming years.

These guys are fighting the good fight to protect culturally and ecologically unique travel destinations. I was able to donate a portion of my flight cost to carbon offsets and found an eco-conscious guide at my destination. Top notch!

I have worked with Sustainable Travel International (STI)since it was first founded. It is run and staffed by an extremely capable group of people dedicated to supporting international travel that is both environmentally and socially responsible. They do this through designing and administering user friendly, market mechanisms that help the traveler enjoy their travel experience and enhance positive impacts on local people and the environment while minimizing any negative impacts. STI is flexible and constantly evolving in response to traveler's and the travel industry's changing needs. STI makes it easy and enjoyable to be a responsible traveler.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

in the growth and breadth of their influence. They work with travel service providers large and small, located all over the world. From a small start-up NGO in Colorado they have grown into a significant force in the international travel industry.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

is the creativity and dedication of the staff. They seek new ways to meet the needs of travelers and their travel service providers. They are constantly refining the tools they have designed and designing new tools to meet changing circumstances.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

dramatically change the way travelers and their supporting industries operate. They have developed the tools. The addition of significant funds would help tremendously in disseminating those tools to the folks that would like to use them.

I work for Expedia am responsible for our sustainable travel program. I was introduced to the people at Sustainable Travel International (STI) through my work. I was so impressed with their mission, their action-oriented approach and the amazing people they had surrounded themselves with that I joined the board. The folks at STI live their mission in their day to day lives and it shows.
