Sustainable Travel International has moved the whole tourism industry forward in amazing ways. It is hard to believe how much they have accomplished over the years. The most impressive thing about them is how well they connect everyone from the big companies, to destinations, to individual tour operators with one informed vision for how tourism can help make the world a better place.

Southern Cone Journeys became a member of Sustainable Travel International (STI) last year and we've had the best experience so far. The webinars have been incredibly useful since the information and experiences shared are valuable and applicable to our business as a responsible inbound tour operator in Chile. We are also undergoing the STEP certification process, which has been great to help us identify what we're doing right and what we can improve in order to be even more sustainable in the future. Soon we'll be the first company in Chile with this certification and we look forward to collaborating with STI to promote sustainability in tourism in the country. This partnership is one of the best things that has happened to us!

STI has done an impressive job of creating programs to help destinations and businesses around the world understand how to make their supply chain more sustainable and more supportive of a healthy people and planet. They've been leaders in the effort to create a single global standard for sustainability practices in the tourism sector and their work has helped to move the industry as a whole towards a better future.

Today my middle school aged children can explain carbon offsets but whenI started hearing about offsetting greenhouse gasses, in the pre-Inconvenient Truth days five or six years ago, I didn't understand why climate change had the scientific community so concerned. That is when I first became aware of STI. I heard STI's founders explain the science behind climate change and learned that it was something that I could not only understand but something that I could find some ways to address in my own life. I have been a great admirer of their work ever since then.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Making the community of people who are market travel products more aware of the environmental impacts of their work. STI inspires and enables people to consume natural, cultural and business resources more efficiently.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find the resources I needed to add more staff. they are stretched way to thinly.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They make complex issues addressable.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

These folks are following their vocations.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Be ruined.

Ways to make it better...

STI had more sufficient resources to keep people up to speed on progress and setbacks impacting the health of communities that share our planet.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Time is wasting. Many of the world's most unique places are facing environmental and cultural threats that could destroy the cultural inheritance that has been built up by local peoples over thousands of years. Organizations like STI defend us all.

STI is an efficient, high energy, low overhead nonprofit doing great things with few resources. It's an impressive organization all around, not least the dedicated team who run it.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

numerous settings: online, with their direct clients, at conferences, in publications.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue it along the same path as current leadership.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the energy and dedication of the management.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

high quality, bright, commitment, knowledgable about issue areas.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

probably influence tourism policies aroung the globe.

Ways to make it better...

the organization had even more resources, but they do an amazing amount with what they have.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the economy, competitive sphere in which to operate.

One thing I'd also say is that...

nonproifts have a role to play and STI does it well.

Sustainable Travel International has been an invaluable partner to Travel Oregon on numerous fronts by providing us with quality information on the sustainable/green travel market, serving as an advisor on our front-line sustainability initiatives, providing administrative support on large-scale, collaborative projects to foster sustainable development in the Northwest, and by speaking at opportune engagements to further our industry's knowledge of sustainable travel. STI's staff is knowledgeable and professional and they have a great sense of adaptability to ensure that they're meeting the client where the client is at and moving forward from there.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

booking my last airline ticket on Continental Airlines. I had the option of purchasing carbon offsets through STI at the point of purchase. Very convenient!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

develop capacity to consult with a wide-range of destinations on how to assess themselves and create an ultimate sustainable tourism destinations.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the opportunity to work together to develop new programs and new ideas that further both of our interests.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

intelligent, creative, hard-working, and down-to-earth.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Develop an effective online global marketplace for sustainable travel offerings; hire enough staff to ensure that burnout doesn't occur; and grow staff in key developing locations like China.

Ways to make it better...

we had more opportunities to meet and work together face-to-face.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the lack of the traveler's willingness to pay for carbon offsets and pay more for green travel options in this recession.

One thing I'd also say is that...

STI is a shining example of successful social entrepreneurship.

STI plays a unique role in engaging all key stakeholders to improve tourism around the World to increase benefits to local communities, protect natural and cultural destinations and improve business practices. They are an NGO that knows how to tread the fine balance between partnering with the private sector and maintaining a strong independent voice that maintains their integrity and holds their corporate partners accountable to improve their business operations.

literally change the way the World's largest industry operates. They already have the vision, talent, tools and relationships - now they need to leverage more resources to change the modern travel industry.
