When you get that diagnosis life changes and you don't know what to do and where to turn. Well, if you are lucky like me you call Support Connection and talk to a peer counselor. Who understands your fears, you confusion, your blabbering, and helps you regroup and move forward with a better understanding of where you are heading and what you need to do. They are some of the most wonderful women I have ever met and do what they do because they care.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find a cure for cancer so they could all stay home and enjoy the day instead of dealing with everyday. Short of that I would find them more space to do the wonderful work they do. They would never complain and they make it work wonderfully for clients but they are doubled up on offices and hold meetings in other location, which is good, but if they could have more space so that they could do even more and better I think they would like that.

I have been walking with and sending this amazing organization jewelry pieces for years! I truly adore what they're about and have accomplished. Together my mother and aunt have had both of the diseases Support Connection walks for and they keep going strong knowing they're definitely not alone in this battle. It's beyond comforting to know there's such a large group out there for support!

Support connection was the first support group that I went to when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 31. Their staff and support groups were are still are beyond incredible. I have become a big supporter of this organization over the years and know that it has helped many others, including a family member of mine who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year. I highly recommend their support to anyone who is or has gone through breast or ovarian cancer. It is a wonderful place to go to when you need. I appreciate all that they have done for me.

Support connection has been there for me since 2007 when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I don't know how I would have managed without the wonderful staff who helped me through a second cancer that same year. They are still with me now that my cancer has returned. When I am feeling down or afraid, they know just what to say so that I can make it through another day.

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, my first call was to my doctor, my second to Support Connection. The Peer Counselors there helped me through the whole process from diagnosis to mastecomy, to chemo, to radiation and recovery. They were comforting since they had also been through cancer and knew what I was going through. They could give me advice, an ear when I needed to talk, and cheers when I finished treatment. The ladies have become an important part of my life and I now volunteer there. I would recommend Support Connection to any person going through breast or ovarian cancer as well as their caregivers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

A number of women I know have contacted this organization and been helped by them. I don't know how I would have made it through the cancer treatment without their support and encouragement.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The people I have met at Support Connection have been very caring and supportive. I have been able to laugh, cry and vent my frustrations throughout my cancer treatment. I always knew when I called that I would reach a knowledgeable, person.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The peer counselors were wonderful people who knew what it was like to go through the treatments and the changes it would make in my life. The organization has become very important to me even 2 years after treatment is over.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Spread the word to more women that help is available. There would be more programs in a more wide-spread area so that women from outside Northern Westchester and Putnam could benefit.

They are all incredible women who can talk the talk and walk the walk with clients because they have been there. They are whatever you need them to be: great cheerleaders, resources, calming voice, sounding boards, or a shoulder to cry on. And they do it with a smile and true love for what they do and a desire to help those who need it.

The past 8 months have been a whirlwind to say the least, and I am one of the fortunate ones who caught it early and have had a fairly easy straight forward course of treatment, but they were the first phone call I made and they have been in my corner all the way. They calmed my fears during that first phone call with warmth, reassurance and honest facts. From there they have made me feel like I could call anytime and ask any question.

They are truly there because they want to help and love what they do, and it shows in all they do.

I am a current client of Support Connection. They are my cheerleaders and my resource group for treatment information. I would not have been so calm about treatment if it hadn't been for Andrea and the rest of the wonderful ladies at Support Connection

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

The only changes needed there is for them to have more money and resource available to them to further the incredible work that they do. Like most not for profits, they do an enormous amount of good with very little.

I have know many of the wonderful women at Support Connection for a few years through business contact. So when I got my diagnosis, I turned to them immediately. They are even more incredible on this side of the fence than I thought possible. The compassion and knowledge that I received has helped me get through the past few months of surgery and treatment plans. They are always supportive and understanding and most of all upbeat. They truly look at life as 1/2 full and have made gallons of lemonade. THANKS LADIES AND GOD BLESS.

I am thrilled to write a review for Support Connection! I have worked with this wonderful organization since 2001 and that relationship has been life changing for me and many others. Just this year my dear friend Deb was diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment. As they always are, Support Connection was there for her to listen, share and give great education so she could make the decisions that were best for her. My friend, Maria Rubino was the program director at Support Connection for many years before she died in 2009 from stage 4 breast cancer. I think Maria's legacy is the personal touch that each of the counselors provides to every woman who calls and to their families as well. I was given the first Spirit of Caring Award set up in Maria's name but the real spirit of caring is embodied in every volunteer and paid employee of this great organization. In my own quest to help, I'll be donating proceeds from my latest book to Support Connection, hoping to spread the word to more people about the great work they do. I talk about the fundraiser on the book's web page of http://www.harriettakesthewheel.com. The book is a fable for working women about choices and empowerment - a perfect fit with one of the most empowering organizations I know. I truly believe I have been privileged to have worked with so many wonderful people and been a small part of the caring and much-needed work they do.

Specifically I was with my friend Maria, the former program director, as she died and so many of the former clients called and talked about how much they were helped by Support Connection at a time they needed it most.

The Support Connection is an amazing organization with a staff of caring and energetic individuals. The stories of the women who have used the Support Connection's services has inspired me to volunteer at this organization. The work they do is really important and I am so pleased to live in the community where Support Connection operates.

Support Connection holds a special place in my heart. 8 years ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She came across Support Connection while trying to find moral support and understanding from those that were going through the same thing she was. At Support Connection she was able to receive individual attention and support from trained staff who were also cancer survivors themselves. Getting advice and support form those who have gone through the same thing themselves makes a world of difference. Support Connection helpped me and my family get through and survive breast cancer altogether. I wanted to do something to show my appreciation so in return I volunteer with my mom and help organize events throughout the year. The staff and volunteers at Support Connection are wonderful people who just want to help and make a difference in our community. I believe stongly in Support Connection and the services they provide for breast and ovarian cancer awareness. Words cant express how dedicated the staff and volunteers are; they are like one big happy family!!

Support Connection was one of the first organizations we worked with at South Side Inn of Yorktown when we opened up 2 years ago in our efforts to work with the community. They were and remain to this day THE ABSOLUTE best, dedicated, & passionate group of people I have ever worked with. This is coming from someone who has been in the business & worked with charitable foundations & non-profits for over ten years. Their level of commitment to their worthy cause and their professionalism is a standard to which all non-profits should be held, and we at South Side consider it our honor to have been able to work with them. Sincerely, Chris Avenius, General Manager-South Side Inn of Yorktown and Mahopac
