I am thrilled to write a review for Support Connection! I have worked with this wonderful organization since 2001 and that relationship has been life changing for me and many others. Just this year my dear friend Deb was diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment. As they always are, Support Connection was there for her to listen, share and give great education so she could make the decisions that were best for her. My friend, Maria Rubino was the program director at Support Connection for many years before she died in 2009 from stage 4 breast cancer. I think Maria's legacy is the personal touch that each of the counselors provides to every woman who calls and to their families as well. I was given the first Spirit of Caring Award set up in Maria's name but the real spirit of caring is embodied in every volunteer and paid employee of this great organization. In my own quest to help, I'll be donating proceeds from my latest book to Support Connection, hoping to spread the word to more people about the great work they do. I talk about the fundraiser on the book's web page of http://www.harriettakesthewheel.com. The book is a fable for working women about choices and empowerment - a perfect fit with one of the most empowering organizations I know. I truly believe I have been privileged to have worked with so many wonderful people and been a small part of the caring and much-needed work they do.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Specifically I was with my friend Maria, the former program director, as she died and so many of the former clients called and talked about how much they were helped by Support Connection at a time they needed it most.

The Support Connection is an amazing organization with a staff of caring and energetic individuals. The stories of the women who have used the Support Connection's services has inspired me to volunteer at this organization. The work they do is really important and I am so pleased to live in the community where Support Connection operates.

I know survivors who has used the services of Support Connecion and they were greatly comforted by the support groups. They really felt comfortable talking with the counselors.

Support Connection holds a special place in my heart. 8 years ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She came across Support Connection while trying to find moral support and understanding from those that were going through the same thing she was. At Support Connection she was able to receive individual attention and support from trained staff who were also cancer survivors themselves. Getting advice and support form those who have gone through the same thing themselves makes a world of difference. Support Connection helpped me and my family get through and survive breast cancer altogether. I wanted to do something to show my appreciation so in return I volunteer with my mom and help organize events throughout the year. The staff and volunteers at Support Connection are wonderful people who just want to help and make a difference in our community. I believe stongly in Support Connection and the services they provide for breast and ovarian cancer awareness. Words cant express how dedicated the staff and volunteers are; they are like one big happy family!!

Support Connection was one of the first organizations we worked with at South Side Inn of Yorktown when we opened up 2 years ago in our efforts to work with the community. They were and remain to this day THE ABSOLUTE best, dedicated, & passionate group of people I have ever worked with. This is coming from someone who has been in the business & worked with charitable foundations & non-profits for over ten years. Their level of commitment to their worthy cause and their professionalism is a standard to which all non-profits should be held, and we at South Side consider it our honor to have been able to work with them. Sincerely, Chris Avenius, General Manager-South Side Inn of Yorktown and Mahopac

when i was diagnosed with breast cancer i called frequently to talk to a peer counselor about my concerns/fears. i attended yoga and meditation classes and received an aromatherapy massage. over the years i have volunteered to help spread the word about this wonderful group of women and services they provide- i have also attended workshops and luncheons, and recently was treated to a spa day for cancer survivors. Its been 10 years and i am still in touch with this group because they are doing an amazing job of providing support to women at the most difficult of times. they are kind, loving and well informed-always striving to improve their services, concerned about the needs of their clients and tirelessly work to increase cancer awareness. as a physical therapist in a homecare setting i work with women who are just discharged from the hospital after mastectomies or starting chemotherapy and i am happy to have a place to refer them to where i know they will receive additional support

A dear friend of mine has ovarian cancer and has been supported in more ways than I can name by Support Connection. She regularly attends a support group, participates in the annual walk, has made countless connections with friends and experts, even received a gift certificate for her house to be cleaned while she was in treatment. Support Connection is an invaluable resource for women with breast and ovarian cancers and their families. I'm so thankful they are so closeby.

My dear friend (and more like a sister), Maria Anna Asked me to walk in support of her. I absolutely agreed to do the Walk in October. First, I would like to say that Support Connection is highly organized and makes you feel that you are part of the event. They are gracious and supportive of all in attendance. I had to send my contribution in later which I indicated in my sponsor sheet and I was called as a reminder. The interpersonal skills and general conversation was painless and I was at the bank and I sent a money order to fulfill my obligation. I would volunteer if I had the time; I have volunteered in many capacities since I was 12 years old in the City of Yonkers and beyond.. Thank you, Support Connection Mary (Yonkers, New York)

I interned at Support Connection for 8 years during my summers and school breaks. I learned about Support Connection after attending their Support-A-Walk with friends. My mother passed away from ovarian cancer when I was 7, so I was eager to do more for this gem in our community. In addition to the incredible work the staff does for women with cancer, I consider them all mentors and heroes in teaching me about serving others. Working at Support Connection gave me an opportunity to honor my mom, but it also led me down my current career path as a social worker. Despite living in a different state now, I stay in touch with many staff members and remain active as a donor and friend of the organization. An organization like Support Connection could be moving mountains, but is consistently held back by lack of funding. Fundraising is hard for all organizations during this tough economic time, and although donors remain loyal to their work, it is harder and harder to make ends meet. Strategic fundraising help or financial assistance would enable the staff to focus more on client services instead of raising dollars.

I never believed that I would need the services of Support Connection while I was organizing my High School community service group to volunteer at the Support-A-Walk. However, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, Support Connection was one of the first phone calls that I made. The lovely ladies were there to guide me. They had yoga and aqua-size groups that I joined. Those groups helped me to recover from the ordeal. Now I go to the Knitting Circle. The support and understanding I get is immeasurable.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2007 at age 37. Needless to say, it was a scary, devastating time for me and my family. A friend recommened Support Connection and I called to speak to a peer counselor named Andrea Karl and also joined the young women's support group which was held once a month. The whole experience at Support Connection made my journey so much easier and I always knew someone was there to help me if I had any questions or concerns. It is very comforting to speak to women who have had similar experiences and understand the hell you are going through. I always looked forward to group meetings to share my story and listen to others in similar situations. I am now a survivor 3 years later and trying to give back by volunteering at Support Connection. I have helped at community health fairs to spread the word about Support Connection services, reached out to hair salons in the area to find out what services they offer for breast cancer patients, and recently signed up to be a buddy for newly diagnosed women. Along the way, I have brought friends to their first meeting when they were diagnosed with breast cancer and did not know where to go. Support Connection is the best place to turn to and I feel lucky to have found it so close to home. They provide an invaluable service to women going through such a tough diagnosis. All of the volunteers are truly angels helping women take it one day at a time. I would never have made it through my treatments without their support.
