Rating: 5 stars   48 reviews

Issues: Arts & Culture, Mental Health, Cancer, Breast Cancer

Location: 40 Triangle Center Suite 100 Yorktown Heights NY 10598 USA

Mission: Support Connection''s primary mission is to provide emotional, social and educational support services to women, their families and friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer. The support provided enables women to help each other and empowers them to become their own healthcare advocates.
Target demographics: Women living with breast and ovarian cancer, as well as their families and friends.
Programs: Women with breast and ovarian cancer, or anyone needing information about these diseases, can come to our office or call us 5 days a week, 9 am - 5 pm NY time, and speak directly with a trained Peer Counselor, a cancer survivor who has traveled the journey already. Calls received after hours are returned the next business day. We have a toll-free number (800-532-4290) for information and support, making this service readily available to anyone nationwide.

Peer Counselors offer information about breast and ovarian cancer, ongoing emotional support, community resources and referrals, connections to other women with similar situations. There are no limits on our peer counseling services. This individualized, free support is available as often as you need it, for as long as you need it, regardless of where you are on your journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

This survivor-to-survivor approach is central to our philosophy; it sets us apart and makes our services both effective and powerful. As one of our Peer Counselors said: “We have walked the walk. We have heard the words 'you have cancer,' felt the fear and anxiety, tried to find some sanity in it all and gone through the tests, the surgeries and the treatments. Just like the women who call, we have held the pieces of a cancer diagnosis together and continued raising our kids, working and maintaining households. We ourselves are women whose lives could not stop for cancer.”

This is one of the most well run, dynamic, and truly effective not for profit organizations I have ever seen. This is a group that provides comfort, information and compassion to women at possibly the worst time in their lives. I have such admiration for the staff and volunteers - their caring is so evident - these are not jobs you do for the money. The atmosphere of caring and gentle support is immediately felt whether you are on the phone or walking in the door. I just can't say enough about them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Double everyone's salaries!

Support Connection was one of the first calls I made when I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2002. It was a very smart call to make. I joined one of their newly diagnosed groups and I can honestly say that it was what really helped me get through my experience. Support Connection was there for me every step of the way. I will never be able to thank them enough for all the support they gave me.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

there is nothing I would change about Support Connection.

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer I reached out to Support Connection. They were a safe place for me at a very difficult time in my life. I joined a newly diagnosed support group that met every week, and it literally helped me get through my treatment and the issues that I had to deal with. They were there for me when I needed support the most. I will be eternally grateful to the wonderful people who gave me the love and warmth and support that I needed back then. As a survivor I now attend Support Connection's Survivor Day luncheon every year and celebrate with other survivors. I also walk in their annual fundraiser. They are a wonderful resource for anyone who has to go through the trauma of a breast or ovarian cancer diagnosis.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my life by using their services.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The wonderful people who run it and th eincredible services they offer.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

experienced and knowledgeable and very supportive.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help even more people through the incredible work they do

I have had the great honor of sitting with the wonderful women from Support Connection to fully understand the scope of their organization and how they help their community. These women are true heroes. They are the warmest, most caring, and open individuals. I am very thankful to have an organization like the Support Connection in my community, providing key services to patients struggling with breast and ovarian cancer. Many continued thanks for the tough, tough work you women do!

I was diagnosed at age 38 and felt lost and hopeless. The first time I called, the woman who answered the phone introduced herself and said she was a survivor. I immediately felt calmer and more hopeful. They answered all my questions and also told me what questions to ask the doctor. Shortly after a Young Woman's Support Group was formed and these women and the peer counselors (also survivors) became a lifeline. We became close in a way that to this day, no one can surpass. Every time I walk in now, years later, I am greeted warmly, with hugs and kisses. Support Connection is a unique organization that I don't know what I would have done if they didn't exist.

I've had the pleasure of working with this organization for many years now and have enjoyed getting to know the staff. Everyone has a connection to breast and/or ovarian cancer and this is what makes the staff so good at what they do - providing services and programs to women with breast and ovarian cancer as well as their families and friends.

My Name is Crystal Schwer, I am the Founding Director of The Kathleen F Marks Memorial Foundation, we are a local non-profit serving cancer patients in financial need as well as funding cancer research in areas most in need of the funds. We have been established 2 years and The WONDERFUL women at support connection have been kind enough to assist me with many questions I had, guiding me to make our foundation successful, I have attended quite a few Support Connection fundraisers, and they have attended a few of ours as well, they are an extremely helpful, knowledgeable and caring group that i am happy to continue to support and look forward to working with soon!

I still remember those first days after receiving my breast cancer diagnosis. Support Connection was recommended to me by my oncologist's office. My first phone call was met with such kindness and understanding and this has continued through the thirteen years I have been in remission. The women who work at SC give their all to help us cope with the many overwhelming aspects of BC treatment and then provide wonderful therapeutic follow-up through the years. My absolute favorite is Gentle Yoga which has taught me the calming techniques of breath work combined with yoga asanas. Support Connection is such an incredible community service and I am so thankful that it is there for all who need it.
