I moved across the state and was unable to bring my three cats with me. After calling numerous rescue groups, shelters, and putting out ads to get my babies adopted I had come up empty handed. I thought I would have to bring them to animal services where cats are put to sleep seven days after admittance. Then someone told me about Suncoast Humane Society. They were so wonderful to work with. They were caring, compassionate and confident a home would be found for my cats. Most importantly, I knew my babies would not be put to sleep after any length of time. The society took the time to learn about my each of my cats and understood the importance of placing them each with the perfect fit. I miss my babies but at least I can feel better now that they are in good hands. Thanks Suncoast.

One day in August, 2 years ago, I met a lady with a female teacup yorkie. She had just (a few hours previous) adopted her at Suncoast Humane Society, Inc. The lady also told me the brother to her female was still available at Suncoast, as their human mother had passed away. Since my cat had died a year prior I had been thinking of getting a little dog that could go to work with me and be my constant companion. I thought, WOW!!! I called my downstairs neighbor and best friend Dan asking him if he wanted to go to Suncoast Humane with me to look at a “little boy” yorkie. Well, off we went….. Got there and found out the little boy had just been adopted. Darn, guess it wasn‘t meant to be!!!! While we were there we did looked at all the other dogs but they were medium and large in size and I live in a condo. Anyway, on our way out I thought, “oh well, I’d just peek in the cat room”. Many cats were walking around, rubbing against our legs and meowing but I was drawn down to the end of the long wall of cages to a cage with the information envelope on it saying “LOVE”. I asked the person in attendance why this cat was off by it’s self. Love had tested positive for worms, been treated and just cleared for adoption. I asked if I could see her out of the cage, Dan and I sat on the bench and the attendant handed “Love”to me and love it was!!! “Love” sat on my lap, put her paws on my chest, stared into my eyes and touched me all the way to my heart. She purred so loudly while other cats climbed all around us, she never moved or took her eyes from mine for what seemed like 15 minutes, then calmly she got up, stepped over onto Dan’s lap and did the same thing, never attempting to get down, not paying any attention to the other cats, just starring into our eyes. Well, the rest is history…”Love”, is known as the upstairs/downstairs cat!!! Dan and I both fell in love with “Love”. She now spends most of the day downstairs with Dan while I’m at work (psss, don’t tell anyone but they take their afternoon nap together in the recliner) then after I get home from work, we eat dinner, then “Love” goes upstairs with me for the night. I’ve had many cats during my life but the greatest of these has been “Love”.

The staff members at Suncoast are amazing in their compassion and ability to find homes for animals in need. The Suncoast Humane Society does an outstanding job both in getting animals placed in new homes and public awareness of animal welfare. We are very proud to be members of such an effective and compassionate organization. The staff of Suncoast is outstanding. Also, they sponsor a great dog obedience course that I recommend to everyone.

Last October I adopted my cat Kitty-Wan Kenobi at Suncoast. The folks there were great, very friendly and clearly working hard to match each animal with the right home, not just hand them off to any random person. They helped me find the perfect cat!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the facility was clean and inviting, which I think will help find more homes for the animals.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help more animals

Ways to make it better...

I could have adopted all the animals.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

more people need to spay/neuter their pets!

One thing I'd also say is that...

I know where to go for my next pet!

A few years ago, our adopted dog of 15 years, Keisha had to be put to sleep. We loved Keisha like part of the family, but the tumour growing in her mouth was causing her so much pain, we had to put her out of her misery. We had such a void in our lives after that, our children were grown and gone, and now our dog too. We were not ready for another dog because Keisha was still too fresh in our memory and another dog could never replace her. We decided on adopting a cat, or more precisly, I talked my husband into adopting a cat. We went to the Suncoast Humane Society, and my husband took one look at this big fat lazy cat named Sammy, and said "this is the one"... I ran with it and we brought Sammy home that day. All of the people at Suncoast were so nice to us and we appreciated all of their advice. Sammy has been such a joy and an addition to our lives and although it was my idea to adopt a cat, she is on my husbands lap every evening. Since that time two years ago, we have now adopted a dog as well. Simba and Sammy get along like they were brothers. Our family is complete again. Thank you to Suncoast Humane Society!

Over the years, our family has always had strays of all sorts. At one point, we had three large dogs, all strays, each with their own sad story. After I put my last dog to sleep because of illness, my daughter convinced me to get a puppy. This little guy has been my sidekick and has come to work with me everyday since he was seven weeks old. One day I received a call from the Suncoast Humane Society that there was a dog there with my name on it. What would I do with two dogs again? We (Bailey and I) went over and there was this beautiful big, red, one and half year old Golden Retriever. He and Bailey immediately got along beautifully. So, much to the chagrin of my husband, Jake came home with me. It’s really hard to tell the personality of a dog when he’s at the Humane Society, but once home, it was obvious Jake had no training whatsoever. Mr. Jake is what I call my “exuberant” dog. Even though Bailey comes to work with me everyday, he is my husband’s dog. Today Jake is my 110 lb buddy and my shadow. I look forward to coming home everyday because I know I will see that big head peering out the door just waiting for me. He is such a joy to have around. The staff at Englewood Suncoast Humane Society is very caring, compassionate, loving and a wonderful group of individuals. How fortunate to have such an upstanding organization in our community.

I LOVE SUNCOAST HUMANE SOCIETY!! They are so compassionate and you can see their love of animals. If the don't have an answer for your question, they will find it out for you. I have been a friend of theirs for many years, having adopted several cats and dogs through out the years. Right now I have just adopted two kittens, sisters and I have three older cats which we adopted from them about ten years ago. We also have two dogs. Suncoast Humane Society keeps their kennels and cages clean. The people who work there plus their many volunteers work in a friendly, caring atmosphere. If anyone wants a pet, you're sure to find one that you'll love and will be your friend forever.

When I first contacted Animal Services, they furnished me with a trap to catch the stray cat in my neighborhood in North Port. After I caught the cat, I found out it was a feral cat and would be put down in 5 days ! I learned from a lady at the animal sanctuary in Englewood, that "Sarasota in Defense of Animals" has a program to rescue feral cats ! When I called a lady named Mary Ann , she explained how they take these feral cats, have them neutered and give them the shots, and then set them free ! Today, after setting the cat free in my neighborhood, I feed this beautiful cat everyday near our home and I feel I helped give this cat named Ebony, a new lease on life ! Marvin Myszka

My husband, mother and I went to Suncoast Humane to adopt a small dog. Unfortunately the only small dog was a yapper who had been returned to the shelter twice after adoption (how sad). Anyway, my husband spotted Bella, a Lab-American Bulldog mix. She has the Lab coloring (black) and big webbed paws, but the shorter legs and the adorable Bulldog face complete with the underbite, so when she looks at you her bottom teeth stick out. It's just too cute. She very seldom barks and she loves everyone and everything (dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and the list goes on.) Most of the animals she can't catch but living in FL, we are lucky enough to have dog parks and even a dog beach near us, so Bella gets out and socializes with everyone! She has turned out to be one of the best dogs we have ever owned and I am so happy to tell others that we adopted her instead of going to a puppy mill or worse. Suncoast Humane is a wonderful facility that took care of spaying, microchiping, shots and everything else we needed before bringing Bella home. I can't imaging my life without her and I encourage anyone looking for a dog, go to the shelters first. Most of the dogs are not there because they are mean or ill-behaved, but especially in today's economy they have been given up by owners who loved them, but simply could not care for them. As the T.V. ad says, these dogs are wise beyond their years and if they could talk would tell you stories of love and survival.
