Address:

500 Sansome Street, Suite 350 San Francisco CA 94111 USA

Mission:

The mission of Summer Search is to find resilient low-income high school students and inspire them to become responsible and altruistic leaders by providing year-round mentoring, life-changing summer experiences, college advising, and a lasting support network.

Results:

In 2010, 995 of our seniors graduated high school and 95% went on to post-secondary school (including 92% to college). 91% were first-generation college students, and 369 of our seniors secured $8.98 Million in financial aid. 85% of our alumni are persisting in college.

Target demographics:

Summer Search students must demonstrate 1) reflection, an interest in learning about themselves, 2) altruism, a care and desire to help others and give back and 3) performance, a commitment to doing their best in school, in their family and community. We believe these three characteristics define leadership.

Direct beneficiaries per year:

In 2010, we served 1696 students (including 1216 high school students and 480 Bridge students).

Geographic areas served:

Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area

Programs:

Summer Search has a uniquely successful four-pronged approach that supports students so they finish high school and go to college, and then helps them be successful in the real world, while encouraging them to give back in the process. We hold our students accountable for themselves while supporting them for the long haul. Our leadership program services include: - Individual weekly mentoring sessions with highly trained staff mentors, from sophomore year to high school graduation. Students are expected to be in weekly contact with Summer Search. - Full scholarships to two summer experiential education programs, after sophomore and junior years. Summer Search connects more students with summer experiential educational opportunities than any other program in the U.S. - College and financial aid advisory services throughout high school. - An alumni network offering support throughout college and beyond. Summer Search alumni follow their own paths to fulfillment, whether as investment bankers or videographers, but all of them show leadership in giving back to the program, their communities, and the world.

Reviews for Summer Search

Summer Search helped me realize how important I am and to keep fighting for what I believe what the rest of the world has gone out.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the success of its graduates, and for helping me realize how strong I can be and how far I can go. Keep reaching out to those kids. A lot of other people have given up, but you haven't.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I wouldn't. I'm not the running kind. I would help support the person running from behind the scenes.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The people and places and trying new things. Growing as a community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

nice, fun, loving, supportive, understanding, patient

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach more kids in other states than they already have. Become more global.

Ways to make it better...

My experience was great and still is. The only thing I have to deal with is my personal demons.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

trying to keep up with the growing numbers of kids/alums and giving more programs without going broke.

One thing I'd also say is that...

They were my emotional outlet; I don't like to talk about myself, so it was good to let it all out and grow from feeling like a victim to feeling super empowered.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

For many of its students Summer Search has encouraged them through high school and become the 1st in their family to go to college.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

market it even harder and grow faster!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Talking to my mentor and becoming good friends with her.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

devoted, caring, kind, passionate

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

serve hundreds more students and have new offices!

Ways to make it better...

mentors seemed to really real (care about your issues) all the time. They were there 80% of the time. I know it's hard!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Though my trip was a very difficult emotional experience, my life as an alumni changes me ever day. I have learned so much about myself and giving and I OWE so much to SS and my mentor, Jay Jacobs.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the continuous support, the skills I've acquired and a near-fearless attitude.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

talk to Jay Jacobs 24/7 to make sure it didn't tank.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the support and endearing sense of family.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

awesome, committed, dedicated, beautiful

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

start an L.A. office!

Ways to make it better...

I had been denied my request to not go on a wilderness trip.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

growing without losing sight of the mission.

Summer Search allowed me to explore things I would have never done. Before Summer Search my outlook on life was negative and I lacked something, something in which I never thought I would get from this program. This program helped me find a more positive outlook on many things.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

100% of all Summer Search students graduate high school. They help you during the good and bad times of HS

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

allow the students to choose where they go but to have them explain their reasoning for their choice

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

having someone to listen!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

phenomenal, spectacular, slightly over happy but kept students smiling

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

allow more students an opportunity to grow

Ways to make it better...

I would keep in contact more often

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

having students open up to total strangers

One thing I'd also say is that...

Summer Search changed my life! They helped me grow in my relationships with everyone around me and most of all to grow as a person. It is hard to find words to describe how much Summer Search has meant to me.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

myself. In my growth through their mentoring and in the growth of my peers in the program.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would to to open offices in more states.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

having someone to talk to about anything. The close relationships I've formed with my mentors and my Summer Search trips!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

kind, understanding. Pushed me to talk about the hard things. There for me, my family.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach out to more students like myself and change many, many more lives.

Ways to make it better...

I had more connection to the other kids in my Summer Search class.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

is how to reach out to more people.

Summer Search is an amazing program with amazing individuals. To be in Summer Search is to gain a second family, a family that inspires, motivates, and emboldens every action you take. Even if you lose touch they are always there to catch you, heal you, and make you the leader that the work needs.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my daily life. I look at friends that did not have Summer Search, and I look at myself, and I know one of the reasons I challenged my boundaries is because of my experiences gained from the people and program.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people... inspiration itself

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, empathetic, encouraging, supportive

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

culture the world's leaders from the bottom up instead of the top down

S.S. helped me through a turbulent time in my life with the help and mentoring and two phenomenal readership enrichment trips. Something that S.S. did for me to help me to be what I am today! I graduated in 2003 but continue to donate to and volunteer with Summer Search and I also serve on the alumni board.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the growing number of alumni!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give it back to Jay (ha ha ha). I would do all I can to spread S.S.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people I've met who have helped me and the people I've met that S.S. has helped.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

caring, emphatic, patient, loving, smart, amazing, encouraging, pushing, excellent!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

grow to more cities and help more nonprofit youngters.

Ways to make it better...

I took more advantage when I could.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting the word out, fundraising, expanding

One thing I'd also say is that...
